Abstract

Warung Pecel Lele Lamongan is one of the SMEs that operates in the culinary sub-sector which are spread almost in every city in Indonesia. These food vendors uses an advertising banner as their information and promotion medium. This research was qualitative with qualitative data interpretation analysis through formal and communication approach. Art forms are analyzed through formalism by inspecting the elements that became a part of the subjects, such as visual elements like color, lines, shapes, textures, and visual principles such as unity and balance. Approach to communication used is to identify the visual communication strategies utilized by the advertising banners. This research shows that the visual elements and principles on Warung Pecel Lele advertising banners is a communication media that have been remembered by people and acts as a unique flagship for Pecel Lele Lamongan.Komunikasi visual iklan spanduk Pecel Lele LamonganWarung Pecel Lele Lamongan merupakan salah satu UMKM sub sektor kuliner yang tersebar hampir di seluruh kota di Indonesia. Warung ini menggunakan iklan spanduk sebagai media informasi dan promosinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif, analisis data dilakukan dengan interpretasi analisis data kualitatif dengan pendekatan formal dan komunikasi. Pendekatan pada bentuk karya seni menggunakan analisis formal dengan cara memperhatikan elemen yang menjadi bentuk subjek, seperti unsur rupa yakni warna, garis, bentuk, tekstur  dan prinsip rupa seperti unity dan keseimbangan. Pendekatan komunikasi digunakan untuk mengenali strategi komunikasi visual yang ada pada iklan spanduk. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan media spanduk dan peranan unsur dan prinsip rupa pada iklan spanduk warung pecel lele merupakan sarana komunikasi visual yang melekat pada benak khalayak luas dan menciptakan citra tersendiri bagi pecel lele Lamongan.

Abstract

Curriculum influences the approaches to teaching and learning foreign languages. The newly introduced Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia has not been implemented by all high schools yet. The readiness of foreign language teachers was one of the influential factors for the school acceptance of the new curriculum. This study examined the readiness of foreign language teachers from high schools that have not yet implemented the Merdeka Curriculum. Data were obtained through questionnaires which were distributed to the English teachers and other subject teachers from several high schools in Indonesia. The results showed that there were two main dimensions that influenced the teacher readiness; the first is several changes that must be implemented and second, the negative attitudes towards the new curriculum. It is hoped that the results of this study can contribute as a support to enhance teachers’ positive attitude to ensure the implementation of the new curriculum.Kesiapan pengajar SMA terhadap pengajaran bahasa Inggris dalam kurikulum MerdekaKurikulum berpengaruh terhadap pendekatan pengajaran dan pembelajaran bahasa asing. Kurikulum Merdeka yang belum lama ini diterapkan di Indonesia belum diterapkan oleh seluruh sekolah menengah atas. Kesiapan pengajar bahasa asing berpengaruh terhadap penerimaan sekolah terhadap kurikulum baru tersebut. Penelitian ini mengkaji kesiapan guru bahasa asing dari SMA yang belum menerapkan kurikulum Merdeka. Data diperoleh melalui kuesioner yang disebarkan kepada guru bahasa Inggris dan guru bahasa asing lainnya dari beberapa SMA/SMK di Indonesia. Hasil menunjukkan dua dimensi utama yang berpengaruh terhadap kesiapan guru, yaitu perubahan yang harus diberlakukan dan sikap negatif terhadap kurikulum yang baru. Diharapkan hasil penelitian ini berkontribusi sebagai masukan perlunya sikap positif guru sebagai pendukung implementasi kurikulum yang baru.

Abstract

Despite the popularity of Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language in Indonesia, there has been a lack of attention given to the development of learning media for Indonesian learners. Consequently, this may hinder their comprehension of the materials. This study aims to develop an innovative learning media for Mandarin Chinese learners to help them master the Hànyǔ Shùzì material. The present study involves 27 students majoring in Mandarin Chinese Education at State University of Malang and employs the ADDIE research and development model by Dick and Carry (1996). The model comprises five stages, 1) Analysis, 2) Design, 3) Development, 4) Implementation, and 5) Evaluation. To complement the model, we also used a qualitative descriptive method for the data analysis and employed questionnaires for material validation test, media test, and the subjects. The expert validations confirmed the validity of the Hànyǔ Shùzì learning media in terms of its materials and media. To conclude, the learning media is worth implementing in the teaching and learning process of Mandarin Chinese to Indonesian learners.Inovasi media audio visual: solusi pembelajaran Hanyu ShuziMeskipun bahasa Mandarin merupakan bahasa asing yang populer di Indonesia, media pembelajaran bahasa Mandarin masih belum banyak dikembangkan. Hal ini berakibat pada sulitnya mahasiswa pembelajar Bahasa Mandarin dalam memahami materi pembelajaran tanpa tersedianya media yang mendukung proses belajar mereka. Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk membuat inovasi dengan mengembangkan media pembelajaran materi Hànyǔ Shùzì untuk digunakan oleh mahasiswa pembelajar bahasa Mandarin. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah 27 mahasiswa Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Mandarin, Universitas Negeri Malang. Pengembangan media Hànyǔ Shùzì menggunakan model pengembangan dari ADDIE oleh Dick and Carry Pengembangan media ini terdiri dari 5 langkah, yaitu 1) Analisis, 2) Design, 3) Development, 4) Evaluation, 5) Implementation. Metode analisis data yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah data deskriptif kualitatif. Instrumen pengumpulan data yang digunakan terdiri dari lembar angket validasi ahli materi, lembar angket validasi ahli media dan lembar angket untuk subjek uji coba. Berdasarkan hasil yang didapat dari angket validasi ahli materi dan ahli media, diketahui media pembelajaran Hànyǔ Shùzì valid dari segi materi maupun media, sehingga disimpulkan bahwa media pembelajaran ini layak untuk digunakan

Abstract

Classroom management is an integral part of teaching and learning in the field of education. Due to the past pandemic, online teaching and learning have been increasing over time, in-cluding online courses. Moreover, it is essential to adapt classroom management strategies to the online environment as the changes in online teaching and learning methods require dif-ferent classroom management strategies to be applied. This study aims to find the teachers’ effective teaching approaches to managing online classrooms and the teacher’s instructional practices. Classroom management theories proposed by Brown, Harmer, and Garret are used as the main framework in this study. The participants were two online English course teachers in West Java and the responses were gathered from interviews to gain qualitative data which were then processed using narrative inquiry design. The findings highlight the significance of communication, online teaching equipment, and sound as the most important aspects (key factors) in online course classrooms. Additionally, the importance of engaging the students and establishing strong teacher-student relationships with them is the key to a well-managed effective online classroom. In addition, clear and comprehensible instructions are also identified as vital for facilitating student understanding.Bagaimana Anda mengatur ruang-ruang kelas daring?: Sebuah penelitian naratif pada guru-guru kursus daringManajemen kelas merupakan bagian integral dari pengajaran dan pembelajaran di bidang pendidikan. Karena pandemi yang lalu, pengajaran dan pembelajaran online telah mening-kat dari waktu ke waktu, termasuk kursus online. Selain itu, sangat penting untuk menga-daptasi strategi manajemen kelas ke lingkungan online karena perubahan metode belajar mengajar online membutuhkan strategi manajemen kelas yang berbeda untuk diterapkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan pendekatan pengajaran yang efektif bagi para pengajar dalam mengelola kelas online dan praktik pengajaran para pengajar. Teori-teori tentang manajemen ruang kelas yang dikemukakan Brown, Harmer, dan Garret digunakan sebagai framework utama pada riset ini. Partisipan penelitian ini melibatkan dua orang guru kursus bahasa Inggris online di Jawa Barat dan tanggapan mereka dikumpulkan melalui wawancara untuk mendapatkan data kualitatif yang kemudian diolah dengan menggunakan desain inkuiri naratif. Temuan penelitian ini menyoroti pentingnya komunikasi, peralatan dalam pembelajaran daring, dan suara sebagai aspek yang paling penting (faktor kunci) dalam ruang kelas kursus online. Selain itu, pentingnya melibatkan siswa dan membangun hubungan guru-siswa yang kuat dengan mereka adalah kunci dari kelas online yang efektif yang dikelola dengan baik. Selain itu, instruksi yang jelas dan mu-dah dipahami juga diidentifikasi sebagai hal yang penting untuk memfasilitasi pemahaman siswa.

Abstract

This study proposes to explain that Indonesian ethnic humor show cultural violence on the target group, in addition, to establishing an interethnic dialogue.  Cultural violence is defined as the entire cultural aspect that can be used to legitimize violence, whether direct or structural. Forms of cultural violence can include religion, ideology, language, empirical sciences, formal science, and cosmology. The problems questioned are (1) how cultural violence is depicted in the language structure of Indonesian ethnic humor and (2) how are the forms of cultural violence in the discourse of Indonesian ethnic humor. Data on ethnic humor were from books, magazines, websites, and social media. All were analyzed using critical discourse analysis. The results show that the potential for cultural violence in ethnic humor can be traced by its content and context. The content relates to the expressed substance and language, while context is under users' social and historical formation.  Ethnic humor in Indonesia targets ethnic minorities such as Chinese and Madurese. When it comes to racist circumstances, ethnic humor can normalize structural discrimination and violence against the referred ethnicities. Cultural violence includes stigmatization, normalization of discriminatory policies, and social exclusion. This finding suggests that nonserious discourse, such as humor, has a severe social impact, therefore it must be used wisely.Budaya kekerasan dalam humor etnis Indonesia: Analisis wacana kritisPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bahwa humor etnis Indonesia menunjukkan kekerasan budaya pada kelompok sasaran, selain itu, untuk membangun dialog antar-etnis. Kekerasan budaya didefinisikan sebagai seluruh aspek budaya yang dapat digunakan untuk melegitimasi kekerasan, baik langsung maupun struktural. Bentuk kekerasan budaya dapat mencakup agama, ideologi, bahasa, ilmu pengetahuan empiris, ilmu pengetahuan formal, dan kosmologi. Pertanyaan yang diajukan adalah (1) bagaimana kekerasan budaya digambarkan dalam struktur bahasa humor etnis Indonesia dan (2) bagaimana bentuk kekerasan budaya dalam wacana humor etnis Indonesia. Data tentang humor etnis berasal dari buku, majalah, situs web, dan media sosial. Semua dianalisis menggunakan analisis wacana kritis. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa potensi kekerasan budaya dalam humor etnis dapat dilacak melalui konten dan konteksnya. Konten terkait dengan substansi dan bahasa yang diekspresikan, sedangkan konteks berada di bawah pembentukan sosial dan sejarah pengguna. Humor etnis di Indonesia menargetkan minoritas etnis seperti Tionghoa dan Madura. Dalam situasi yang rasis, humor etnis dapat memperkuat diskriminasi struktural dan kekerasan terhadap etnis yang disebutkan. Kekerasan budaya mencakup penstigmaan, normalisasi kebijakan diskriminatif, dan eksklusi sosial. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa wacana yang tidak serius, seperti humor, memiliki dampak sosial yang serius, oleh karena itu harus digunakan dengan bijak.

Abstract

This study aims to see the performativity of terracotta through the process and the culture of the roof tile production industry in Jatiwangi District, Majalengka Regency, West Java. This research used qualitative methods, and collecting data used a combination of three methods: literature study, participatory observation, and semi-structured interviews. After the data is collected, the next step is data analysis using the concept of performativity and art agency. JaF emerged by taking on the role of a change agent, inviting Jatiwangi residents, especially roof tile industry players, to survive together and stay true to their native culture using participatory arts engagement. Perform various artistic activities with Jatiwangi residents to declare that they exist. They are using artistic approaches to narrate defensive actions, holding various forms of art festivals to show their progress in Jatiwangi. This is due to the performativity of roof tiles as the initial trigger, the community, and the development of Jatiwangi as an "art factory" into Jatiwangi Art Factory (JaF). So, in JaF, roof tiles, artisans, artists, cultural actors, terracotta, and the "art factory" brand is a performance agency in the land, city, and surroundingsPerformativitas badan seni di daerah, kota, dan sekitarnya di JaFPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat performativitas terakota melalui proses dan budaya industri produksi genteng di Kecamatan Jatiwangi, Kabupaten Majalengka, Jawa Barat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif, dan pengumpulan data menggunakan kombinasi tiga metode: studi kepustakaan, observasi partisipatif, dan wawancara semi terstruktur. Setelah data terkumpul, langkah selanjutnya adalah analisis data dengan menggunakan konsep performativity dan art agency. JaF muncul dengan mengambil peran sebagai agen perubahan, mengajak warga Jatiwangi, khususnya pelaku industri genteng, untuk bertahan bersama dan tetap setia pada budaya asli mereka melalui keterlibatan seni partisipatif. Melakukan berbagai kegiatan seni bersama warga Jatiwangi untuk menyatakan bahwa mereka ada. Mereka menggunakan pendekatan artistik untuk menceritakan tindakan defensif, mengadakan berbagai bentuk festival seni untuk menunjukkan kemajuan mereka di Jatiwangi. Hal ini dikarenakan performativitas genteng sebagai pemicu awal, masyarakat, dan berkembangnya Jatiwangi sebagai “pabrik seni” menjadi Jatiwangi Art Factory (JaF). Jadi, di JaF, genteng, pengrajin, seniman, aktor budaya, terakota, dan merek "pabrik seni" adalah agensi pertunjukan di tanah, kota, dan sekitarnya.

Abstract

Nautical students are required to have communicative competence in English that will be beneficial for their future careers. However, the teaching and learning implemented remain insufficient in terms of sources, learning topics, and learning materials. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate teacher’s and students’ preferences in teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and elaborate the learning needs. This study utilizes a mix-methods approach which involves fifty-three nautical students and an ESP teacher at a maritime polytechnic located in East Java. The needs analysis was conducted by distributing online questionnaires containing three sections, such as (1) students’ current level of English competency, (2) skills priorities, and (3) learning topics needs. The semi-structured interview was conducted virtually with the teacher. The results of the questionnaire and interview were synthesized and summarized. The findings demonstrate that students’ English proficiency is at beginner to low intermediate level. Furthermore, speaking is stated as the most imperative skill among the students. However, in order to maximize speaking ability, the development of listening topics and sources is required.  In addition, some developments for other skills are also required due to the inadequacy and unavailability of learning topics in the syllabus. Future research is worth conducting aiming at developing the ESP syllabus for Nautical students.Kesesuaian materi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk mahasiswa pelayaranSiswa pelayaran dituntut untuk memiliki kompetensi komunikatif dalam bahasa Inggris yang akan bermanfaat untuk karir mereka di masa depan. Namun, pembelajaran yang dilaksanakan masih belum memadai dari segi sumber dan bahan ajar. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki preferensi guru dan siswa dalam mengajar English for Specific Purposes (ESP) dan mengelaborasi kebutuhan pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan metode campuran yang melibatkan lima puluh tiga mahasiswa pelayaran dan seorang guru ESP di sebuah politeknik pelayaran yang terletak di Jawa Timur. Analisis kebutuhan dilakukan dengan membagikan kuesioner online yang berisi tiga bagian, yaitu (1) tingkat kompetensi bahasa Inggris siswa saat ini, (2) prioritas keterampilan, dan (3) kebutuhan materi pembelajaran. Wawancara semi-terstruktur dilakukan secara daring dengan guru. Hasil kuesioner dan wawancara disintesis dan dirangkum. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa kecakapan bahasa Inggris siswa berada pada tingkat pemula hingga menengah rendah. Selanjutnya, berbicara dinyatakan sebagai keterampilan yang paling penting di kalangan siswa. Namun, untuk memaksimalkan kemampuan berbicara, diperlukan pengembangan bahan dan sumber menyimak. Selain itu, beberapa pengembangan keterampilan lain juga diperlukan karena ketidakcukupan dan tidak tersedianya topik dan materi dalam silabus. Penelitian di masa depan perlu dilakukan dengan tujuan mengembangkan silabus ESP untuk siswa pelayaran.

Abstract

This study analyzes how Shaila Abdullah's Saffron Dreams portrays and resists Orientalists' stereotypes of Muslim women. Through Saffron Dreams, Abdullah attempts to put up a fight against the negative stereotypes of Orientalists toward Muslim women. It is shown based on how the main protagonist is portrayed as a Muslim Pakistani-American woman who lost her husband in 9/11, experiencing mistreatment from her host land society due to the spreading negative stereotypes of Muslim women. By utilizing Close Textual Analysis, this study focuses on examining how the novel depicts and resists the Muslim women's stereotype by Orientalists. This study discovers that the novel repeatedly portrays that Muslim women are perceived as oppressed by men and patriarchy who are forced to do arranged marriage and use hijab and also as the "Other" or dangerous foreigners unaccepted as part of Western society. Indeed, the novel depicts the main protagonist's response to orientalists’ perspectives of Muslim women through the repetitive use of color symbolism, such as red, black, white, green, blue, brown, orange, gold, and yellow for the main protagonist representing her resistance of orientalism.Simbolisme warna dan perlawanan dalam Saffron Dreams karya Shaila AbdullahPenelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana novel Saffron Dreams karya Shaila Abdullah menggambarkan dan melawan stereotip para orientalis terhadap perempuan Muslim. Melalui Saffron Dreams, Abdullah mencoba untuk melakukan perlawanan terhadap stereotip negatif para orientalis terhadap perempuan Muslim. Hal ini ditunjukkan melalui bagaimana protagonis utama digambarkan sebagai seorang wanita Muslim Pakistan-Amerika yang kehilangan suaminya dalam peristiwa 9/11, yang mengalami perlakuan buruk dari masyarakat di negara asalnya akibat stereotip negatif terhadap wanita Muslim. Dengan menggunakan Analisis Tekstual Mendekat, penelitian ini berfokus untuk melihat bagaimana novel ini menggambarkan dan melawan stereotip perempuan Muslim yang dibuat oleh para orientalis. Pene­litian ini menemukan bahwa novel Saffron Dreams berulang kali menggambarkan bahwa perempuan Muslim dianggap tertindas oleh laki-laki dan patriarki yang dipaksa untuk melakukan perjodohan dan menggunakan hijab dan juga sebagai "Liyan" atau orang asing yang berbahaya yang tidak diterima sebagai bagian dari masyarakat Barat. Novel ini menggambarkan respon protagonis utama terhadap perspektif orientalis tentang perempuan Muslim melalui penggunaan simbolisme warna yang berulang-ulang, seperti merah, hitam, putih, hijau, biru, coklat, oranye, emas, dan kuning untuk protagonis utama yang mewakili perlawanannya terhadap orientalisme.

Interpersonal meaning expresses the social role connections that exist between both parties in communication. The current study aimed at discovering interpersonal mean-ing in related to MOOD preferences from inside of Folklore album arranged by Taylor Swift. MOOD refers to the grammatical structure that indicates the function of a sen-tence in expressing the songwriter’s attitude. Using a qualitative research method, this paper reports on MOOD choices as well as speech functions from inside of the chosen tunes of Folklore album. This research revealed that MOOD type of declarative clause and speech function of statement dominate the lyrics of the chosen tunes, while speech function of offer does not appear. Thus, the songwriter transmits the thoughts on the lyrics to the audience by providing the information. Considering the supplied criteria, the use of the singular pronoun “I” as the primary subject effectively fosters a sense of interpersonal connections. However, a deeper investigation of interpersonal meaning is required in order to enhance students’ English skills, particularly in the expression of attitudes in various language capabilities in related to reading, listening, as well as speaking.

Abstract

Family language policy encompasses various aspects, such as identity, cultural heritage, communi-cation, education, and social integration within a family or community. Previous research has pri-marily focused on the use and preservation of native languages within multilingual societies, leav-ing a gap in understanding the relationship between family language policies and the acquisition of foreign languages in a familial setting. Consequently, this study presents a conceptual approach that explores key concepts and variables relevant to the family language policy approach, specifical-ly regarding the acquisition of Arabic by the Indonesian Muslim community. By analyzing the con-nection between the family language policy approach and variables related to foreign language acquisition, we hypothesized that the learning or acquisition of Arabic among Indonesian Muslims can be influenced by the language policy implemented within their families. Muslim parents play a crucial role in this process, both ideologically and practically, by providing an optimal learning envi-ronment and motivation for their children. As the family language policy involves decisions and practices governing language use and learning within the family context, it encompasses Muslim parents' choices regarding the Arabic language used at home, its application in specific activities, and their support for their children’s learning.
