Abstract

Gender-based violence (GBV) could be describes as a pervasive issue that remains systematically under addressed and under-reported within the Nigerian higher education system. This menace, no doubt, is exacting severe consequences on student wellbeing, academic performance, institutional reputation, and national human capital development. This paper examines the nature, prevalence, drivers, and multi-dimensional implications of GBV across Nigerian tertiary institutions and used Feminist Theory, particularly gender power theory as articulated by Connell (2005)., Institutional Theory (DiMaggio & Powell, 1983) and Communication Theory, particularly Habermas's (1984) theory of communicative action, as theoretical frameworks. Drawing on empirical studies, the theoretical frameworks, and existing legal and policy instruments, the paper identifies sexual harassment, peer-based violence, and institutional silence as dominant manifestations of GBV, while locating their persistence in entrenched patriarchal norms, asymmetrical power relations, rapid institutional growth outpacing governance capacity, and chronically weak enforcement mechanisms. Adopting a communication-driven, multi-sectoral analytical orientation, the paper proposes strategic pathways toward safe and inclusive campuses, encompassing strengthened anti-GBV policies, anonymous survivor-centred reporting systems, gender-responsive curricula, technology-enabled advocacy, community partnerships, and transformational leadership commitment. The paper argues that most higher institutions in Nigeria, like Southern Delta University, Ozoro, Delta State, by virtue of their developmental trajectory, are uniquely positioned to institutionalise gender equity from inception, rather than as corrective retrofit. It concludes that creating safe campuses is not merely a moral imperative but a strategic prerequisite for sustainable higher education and national socio-economic development in Nigeria.

Abstract

Discussion surrounding mental health continues to be a prominent issue in society. Despite increasing public awareness, cases of depression, suicide, self-harm behaviors, and substance abuse persist, including among university students. In fulfilling the role of a university student, individuals encounter various personal and academic demands. Previous studies have identified resilience as a key factor enabling students to cope with such challenges constructively. Therefore, it is important to investigate factors associated with students’ levels of resilience. This study aims to identify demographic factors associated with students’ resilience levels. This research employed a quantitative approach, utilizing independent samples t-tests and ANOVA through JASP version 0.18.1.0. Data analysis was based on resilience scores obtained from 275 university students measured using the Indonesian version of the Resilience Evaluation Scale. These scores were then examined in relation to demographic factors including gender, age, campus activity involvement, financial status, and residential status. The findings revealed significant differences in students’ resilience scores based on gender, age, campus activity involvement, and residential status. In contrast, no significant differences in resilience scores were found based on financial status. The dynamics of how each factor contributes to students' resilience are further elaborated in the discussion.

Abstract

Creativity is considered an essential competence in vocational education, particularly in fashion design learning where students are required to generate innovative design ideas and develop original fashion products. However, the development of students’ creative thinking skills is influenced by multiple cognitive and non-cognitive factors. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of digital fashion literacy, critical thinking, and perseverance on students’ creative thinking ability in vocational fashion education. The study employed a quantitative correlational research design involving 128 eleventh-grade vocational students enrolled in fashion design programs in two public vocational senior high schools located in East Java Province, Indonesia. Information was obtained through questionnaires that participants completed independently without assistance to measure digital fashion literacy, critical thinking, and perseverance, while creative thinking ability was assessed through a performance-based design task evaluated using a structured rubric. Multiple linear regression techniques were employed as the primary statistical method to examine and interpret the dataset with the assistance of Stata MP 17. The results indicate that digital fashion literacy (β = 0.338, p < 0.001), critical thinking (β = 0.182, p = 0.015), and perseverance (β = 0.282, p < 0.001) have positive and significant effects on students’ creative thinking ability. Simultaneously, the regression model explains 33.4% of the variance in creative thinking ability (R² = 0.334). These findings highlight the importance of integrating digital competence, higher-order thinking skills, and perseverance within vocational learning environments to enhance students’ creative potential in fashion design education.

Abstract

This article presents an explanation of the relationship between individual culture and how individuals perceive complex trauma. This study examined the effect of neglect and rejection trauma on adolescent identity development under the influence of culture. A single-case study was employed to explore the impact of complex trauma on the subject. The subject of this study was a university student identified as a Muslim and Javanese. Data were collected from ten counselling interviews using Strength-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Trauma-Informed Care. The counselling interview transcriptions were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Themes in the data explain that complex trauma has caused the subject to experience identity confusion, and culture strongly influences the subject's attitudes toward traumatic experiences, especially in how she sees herself as a daughter of a Javanese family. Further, the result suggests the importance of considering virtues and values from the client's background to enhance client resilience during counselling.

Abstract

Academic burnout has become a significant concern in higher education due to increasing academic demands and its impact on students’ well-being and performance. Despite the availability of counseling services, structured self-help resources specifically designed to mitigate academic burnout remain limited. This study aimed to develop and examine the content validity and acceptability of an Academic Burnout Mitigation Guide designed as a self-help resource for university students. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach adapted from the Borg and Gall model up to the operational product revision stage. The validation process involved nine experts representing guidance and counseling, design and media, and Indonesian language, as well as 11 prospective student users. Data were collected using acceptability scales covering appropriateness, usefulness, attractiveness, and ease of use, and analyzed using Aiken’s V index alongside qualitative feedback. The results indicated a very high level of content validity and acceptability, with an Aiken’s V index of 0.87 from experts and 0.85 from prospective users. These findings suggest that the guide demonstrates strong conceptual alignment and operational feasibility as a preventive self-help tool. The study concludes that the validated guide provides a theoretically grounded and practically acceptable foundation for subsequent effectiveness testing in broader higher education contexts.

Abstract

Indonesia’s frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged regions face persistent educational disparities, particularly in foundational numeracy. This study examines the effectiveness of the GASING (Gampang, Asyik, dan Menyenangkan-Easy, Fun, and Enjoyable) method in enhancing numeracy skills among teachers (n=32) and students (n=64) in Manggarai Barat Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Situated within the geography of education framework, this research employs a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design across five numeracy domains: foundational number sense (Bakal Kubagi), addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. The intervention was implemented over 17 days as part of the Gejur Rekeng Le program. Results demonstrate substantial score gains across all domains for both groups. Teachers exhibited mean gains ranging from +18.8 to +66.6, while students showed gains from +45.3 to +75.6. The highest absolute gains were observed where pre-test baselines were lowest, particularly in division and foundational number sense. These findings suggest that the GASING method is a viable pedagogical intervention for addressing numeracy deficits in geographically marginalized regions, with implications for educational equity policy in Indonesia’s archipelagic context.

Abstract

One of the problems in mathematics learning is the low level of students’ learning interest. Furthermore, the standard of education in Indonesia has not yet reached the level achieved by several other nations, as reflected in Indonesia’s scores and rankings in the PISA survey, which include mathematical literacy. The objective of this study is to assess the application of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach in the learning process to enhance students’ learning interest and mathematical literacy. This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a pretest–posttest control group framework. The participants comprised junior high school students from a public school in Yogyakarta, and two eight-grade groups as the sample, designated as the experimental and control groups. The instruments used were a learning interest questionnaire, a mathematical literacy test, and an observation sheet. Data were analyzed using Hotelling’s Trace and a one-sample t-test at a 5% significance threshold. The findings confirmed that CTL and expository approaches can enhance students’ learning interest and mathematical literacy. Furthermore, the comparative analysis revealed that the CTL approach demonstrated more optimal outcomes and had a significant impact compared to the expository approach in enhancing students’ learning interest and mathematical literacy.
