Abstract

Mathematical literacy is defined as the ability to formulate, use and interpret mathematics in a variety of contexts, including systematic reasoning, using mathematical concepts, procedures, facts, and tools to describe, explain, and predict phenomena to help individuals. One of the things that underlie the low ranking of Indonesian students is weak mathematical literacy is the lack of use of non-routine problems that are made based on real-life contexts, so they can only work on routine questions. This study was conducted to explore mathematical literacy indicators that appear in solving real problems through math trail activities. The research subjects were taken from the ranking of students in the previous class, so that 1 male student, namely S1, and 1 female student, namely S2, were selected, who ranked highest in the class for each gender. S1 shows indicators of mathematical literacy in the form of communication, mathematization, reasoning, and argumentation, designing a strategy, using symbolic, formal, technical language and operation, and using mathematical tools. While S2 is in communication, mathematization, reasoning and argumentation, designing a strategy, representation, formal, technical language and operation, and using mathematical tools.

Abstract

STEAM approach is part of mathematics, science, and other teaching policies to facilitate students' higher-order thinking skills, including Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, and Creativity. This research aims to examine both math and science teachers' perceptions and obstacles in implementing the STEAM approach, formulating teacher's preparation model in applying it. This descriptive research was conducted using survey methods by Google Form. The research subjects were 68 mathematics teachers and 42 science teachers in Semarang City. The results showed that both the perceptions of math and science teachers tend to have a positive attitude to apply the STEAM approach to science/math in the classroom with the highest average score (4.13) and the lowest average score occurs in the knowledge indicator of STEAM learning steps based on the science and math integration project (3.31). Meanwhile, the obstacle with the highest score in applying the STEAM approach for both math and science teachers is still required more knowledge about STEAM. Based on the study of perceptions and obstacles, and the existing preparation models, it is concluded that the modification of the hypothetical model can be done by strengthening the knowledge and skills of STEAM, as well as preparation practices in the Teacher Working Group/MGMP (Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran) forum.

Abstract

Students' mathematical communication skills are still not optimal, this can be seen when students have difficulty in expressing their mathematical ideas in the form of writing or pictures. Students can understand the meaning of the problem given, but have difficulty communicating it again in the form of a mathematical model. This study aims to determine the mathematical communication skills of class VIII students in solving mathematical problems based on visual and auditory learning styles. The subjects of this study were eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 25 Semarang, each with one student with a visual learning style and one student with an auditory learning style. Data collection techniques used questionnaires to classify students based on learning styles, written tests, and interviews to determine students' mathematical communication skills. The validity test of the data used is triangulation technique by comparing the results of the written test and the results of the interview. The results of the study concluded that both students with a visual learning style and students with an auditory learning style have met the indicators of expressing everyday events into language or mathematical symbols and can explain ideas, situations, and mathematical relationships with real objects, pictures, graphs, and algebra . However, students with an auditory learning style have a higher level of accuracy than students with a visual learning style in writing mathematical symbols in the process of solving problems in solid-sided geometric material.

Abstract

Geometry skills are fundamental in studying mathematics in three dimensions. In schools, it is expected to make schemes of methods and solutions so that students in junior high school can more easily understand geometry lessons by providing tangible examples in students' environments. One of the solution keys to mathematics lessons, especially in geometry, is to combine it with ethnomathematics. In this study, a meta-analysis is reviewed to present an empirical synthesis of studies designed to deliver a systematic design of ethnomathematics related to the meta-analysis's geometric learning education submission, empirical studies are used on the analysis of journal articles from 2015-2021. This research is focused on empirical studies using mixs-methods this meta-analysis conduct to gain knowledge of ethnomathematics on the general effect of students' geometric skills. This method aims to examine and combine all pertinent studies, both published and unpublished, so that a weighted mean effect size would be derived. This meta-analysis aims to review the quantitative results of empirical studies of the effect of ethnomathematics in conveying students' geometric abilities The results of this study are statistically significant with small mean scores on effect sizes and heterogeneity test results between studies. Linear models are used to describe the independent variables that affect all effect sizes. The meta-analysis results were obtained. The effect of ethnomathematics has a positive impact on learning geometry in secondary schools. Ethnomathematics can be used as a solution to learning geometry to improve students' geometry skills.
