Abstract

The inhibitory effect of spent coffee grounds (SCG) tannin extract as a corrosion inhibitor on ferrous metal in acid and alkaline media has been carried out. The results of evaluation the corrosion rate (CR) and inhibition efficiency (IE) in this study used the weight loss method. The Internasional Standard (SI) unit for calculating the corrosion rate was mm/year (mmpy). The results of the characterization of SCG tannin extract using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that the functional groups were O-H, aliphatic C-H, C=O ester, aromatic C=C, C-O-H, and C-O-C ether which indicated the presence of tannin compounds in SCG. The results of the research showed that the maximum concentration of SCG tannin extract in inhibiting corrosion in acidic medium was 1000 ppm with an average CR of 2.2520 mmpy and an IE of 29.23%, while in alkaline medium it was 1000 ppm with an average CR 0.0592 mmpy and IE 50.93% for 5 days of soaking time, respectively. The surface morphology of the corroded ferrous metals was monitored with a USB digital microscope at 1000x magnification.

Abstract

Background: Formulation is an activity to design the composition of the active ingredients and additional ingredients to make specific preparations. One of the herbal plants that can be formulated in hand and body lotion is binahong leaves (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis), which contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, and tannins. These secondary metabolites function as antibacterials. Gram-positive bacteria often cause skin problems, such as Staphylococcus aureus. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of 5%, 7.5%, 10%, 12.5%, and 15% binahong leaf extract hand and body lotion against S. aureus bacteria. This research was conducted experimentally, including an examination of the physical quality of the preparation (organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, and adhesion). This Method research is an experimental study, including collecting samples, making kepok banana heart calyx juice with concentrations of 2%, 4% and 6%, ointment evaluation tests and cut wound healing activity tests on white mice which were grouped into five groups with each group consisting of of 5 mice. Statistical analysis included a one-way ANOVA test to see whether there was a significant difference between concentrations and wound healing in white male mice. The results showed that binahong leaf extract could be formulated into hand and body lotion preparations because it has a homogeneous composition, a pH range of 4.8-5.1, spreadability of 5.7-6.0 cm, and adhesion of 2.16-2.49 seconds. Hand and body lotion preparations with 10% binahong leaf extract have the best physical quality. All formulations of binahong leaf extract hand and body lotion in this study could inhibit the growth of S. aureus with weak inhibition, and the best formula for inhibiting the growth of S. aureus was 15% binahong leaf extract hand and body lotion having a diameter of inhibition zone 2.575 m.

Abstract

Free radical reactions were increased in cells, leading to degenerative illnesses. Antioxidant components may inhibit free radical reactions. Exogenous antioxidants are primarily found in red palm (Cyrtostachys renda Blume). This study aimed to assess the potency of antioxidant activities of fruit and root C. renda, which were extracted in n-hexane, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and water. The bioactivity of the fractionate, isolate, and positive control (ɑ-tocopherol) were used in the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method. The result showed that the ethyl acetate extract of fruit and roots had the highest antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value of 11.47 ± 0.169 µg/mL (very strong category) in the roots. In contrast, the IC50 value in the fruit was 10.69±0.084 g/mL. Further evaluating of antioxidant activity in the roots revealed that the IC50 value for isolate A was 28.17±0.232, while the IC50 value for isolate B was 24.80±0.296 g/mL. The fruit of isolation C had an IC50 value of 14.91±0.247 g/mL, while isolate D had an IC50 value of 25.98±0.133 g/mL. Compared to the antioxidant activity of ɑ-tocopherol, which has an IC50 value of 13.54±0.038, isolate C is very potent inhibit free radical scavenger. In contrast, the other isolates are two times lower than the positive control.

Abstract

Introduction: Breast engorgement is a damming that occurs due to the obstruction of venous flow or lymphatic ducts caused by the accumulation of breast milk. According to the WHO, in 2021, data revealed that around 17,230,142 mothers faced breastfeeding problems, consisting of sore nipples (56.4%), breast engorgement (36.12%), and mastitis (7.5%). A preliminary survey conducted by researchers in October 2023 identified eight postpartum mothers experiencing breast engorgement. The research objective is to determine the relationship between breastfeeding frequency and breastfeeding technique with breast engorgement in postpartum mothers at Alisha Clinic Medan in 2023. The research method employed is an analytical survey with a cross-sectional approach. The population includes all postpartum mothers at Alisha Clinic Medan, totalling 34 individuals. The sampling technique used is the total population, where all 34 postpartum mothers experiencing breast engorgement are taken as samples, using both primary and secondary data. Results: Based on the research findings, out of 34 respondents, 13 (38.2%) had optimal breastfeeding frequency, while 21 (61.8%) had suboptimal breastfeeding frequency. Additionally, 10 (29.4%) practised correct breastfeeding techniques, while 24 (70.6%) used incorrect techniques. Furthermore, 20 (58.8%) experienced breast engorgement, and 14 (41.2%) did not. The chi-square test results indicate a significant relationship between breastfeeding frequency and breast engorgement (p = 0.012 < α 0.05) and between breastfeeding technique and breast engorgement (p = 0.005 < α 0.05). Conclusion: There is a relationship between breastfeeding frequency and technique with breast engorgement.

Abstract

Phytochemical studies about Curcuma genus such as Curcuma Longa and Curcuma zedoaria have shown the plants contains curcumin as the most isolated compound shown photoprotection agent and can be formulated as cream preparation. The concentration of Curcuma longa in cream preparation in this reseach was 0,5% and Curcuma zedoaria 0,5; 1; 1,5; 2; 2,5; and 3%. Cream preparations were physical evaluated of semi solid dosage form i.e pH organoleptic, spreadability, homogeneity, adhesion time and viscosity. The result was compared to SNI 16-4399-1996 (Indonesian Standard of UV protection preparation). All formulas were tested for radical scavenging activity using the DPPH method and SPF value determination. The results shown that formulas 3-6 met SNI requirements while formulas 1 and 2 did not met SNI from adhesion testing with results <1 second. Based on the antioxidant test results, it was found that formula 6 had the best antioxidant activity with lowest IC50 value of 126.69 ppm. It was linear as SPF value of formula 6 with 20.24 (ultra category). From this research, it was concluded that the greater of concentration of Curcuma zedoaria extract in cream preparation so free radical scavenger activity was better. Antioxidant activity is related to the SPF value of the preparation.
