Abstract

This study aims to identify the factors causing stress and the coping strategies used by students studying while working at the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication, State Islamic University of North Sumatra. This study uses a qualitative case study approach with six respondents selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results revealed five main themes of stress sources: difficulty managing time, conflicting academic tasks, lack of family support, difficulty obtaining work permits, and an unsupportive work environment. Difficulty managing time emerged as the dominant factor experienced by all respondents. In responding to stress, students employed coping strategies: problem-focused coping, such as planning, discussing with superiors, and prioritizing, and emotion-focused coping, such as surrendering to God, seeking emotional support, and expressing emotions through relaxation activities. These findings emphasize the importance of time management skills, emotional regulation, and social support as psychological foundations for maintaining academic and work balance among working students.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on the critical thinking skills of eighth-grade students at Nurus Salam Islamic Junior High School. The background of this study is based on the importance of critical thinking skills as one of the essential skills of the 21st century that must be possessed by students, especially in the context of Islamic education, which emphasizes the development of sound reasoning and logic. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design of the nonequivalent control group type. The research subjects consisted of two classes, namely the experimental class that used the PBL model and the control class that used conventional learning methods. The research instrument was a critical thinking ability test administered at the pretest and posttest. Data analysis was conducted using parametric statistical tests, namely independent t-tests to determine the difference in results between the two groups. The results showed that there was a significant difference in critical thinking skills between students in the experimental group and the control group. Students who learned using the PBL model experienced a higher increase in critical thinking scores compared to students who learned using conventional methods. This shows that the PBL model is effective in developing students' critical thinking skills because it creates an active, collaborative, and challenging learning atmosphere. Thus, the PBL model is recommended as a learning strategy that can improve the quality of the learning process and outcomes, especially in the development of higher-order thinking skills in Islamic school students.

Abstract

Storytelling ability, as the foundation of narrative literacy, is a crucial skill in the 21st century, requiring students to master effective communication, innovative creativity, and analytical critical thinking. This study aims to profile in depth the storytelling ability of fifth-grade students at Sugihwaras Elementary School, focusing on five main story aspects: plot structure, character development, setting description, language mastery, and non-verbal expression. Using a quantitative descriptive research method, this study involved 100 students from 4 classes, selected randomly, as a representative sample. The instrument used was a visual stimulus-based storytelling test, assessed using a validated comprehensive assessment rubric. The results showed that most students (60%) had storytelling ability at the "adequate" level, but there was a significant gap in mastery of specific aspects. Only 20% of students showed "good" storytelling ability, while the other 20% were at the "poor" level. These findings indicate the need for more structured and targeted learning interventions to improve students' storytelling abilities, with an emphasis on developing narrative skills that are relevant to the demands of 21st-century competencies. The implication of this study is the need for the integration of innovative and contextual learning strategies to develop students' narrative literacy holistically.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contribution of cashew farmers' income to household income. The background of this study is based on the strategic role of the agricultural sector, particularly cashew farming, in supporting the economy of farming families and as a source of funding for children's education. In the context of human resource development in rural areas, households' ability to finance education is greatly influenced by the stability and size of income obtained from farming activities. The research method used is a quantitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design. The research sample consists of 100 cashew farmer households selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using simple linear regression with SPSS software. The results of the study indicate that income from cashew farming significantly contributes to household income, with a regression coefficient of 0.723 and an R-squared value of 0.522. Meanwhile, the contribution to children's education expenditure is also significant, with a regression coefficient of 0.648 and an R-squared value of 0.471. In-depth interviews revealed that the majority of farmers prioritize children's education when income from farming increases. Thus, cashew farming not only serves as an economic support but also plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability of children's education in rural areas
