Abstract

This research is motivated by the low mathematics learning outcomes of class VIII students of SMP Negeri 5 Padang Panjang, which is indicated by the failure to achieve the minimum mastery limit. Initial observations indicate that the low activity and participation of students in learning are related to the use of learning media that are still conventional and less interactive. This study aims to determine the effect of the use of Articulate Storyline learning media on the mathematics learning outcomes of class VIII students of SMP Negeri 5 Padang Panjang. The type of research used is experimental research with the Static Group Comparison Design. The research population includes all class VIII students, with sampling using a random sampling technique. Class VIII.2 was designated as the experimental class and class VIII.5 as the control class. Research data were collected through a mathematics learning outcome test that has been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was carried out using the t-test with the help of Minitab software at a significance level of 0.05. The results of the analysis show that the calculated t value is greater than the t table (5.703 > 1.67) and the P-value is smaller than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05), so H₀ is rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of Articulate Storyline learning media has a significant effect on the mathematics learning outcomes of class VIII students of SMP Negeri 5 Padang Panjang.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the mathematical critical thinking skills of class XI MIPA 2 students of SMA Negeri 1 Sindue Tombusabora in terms of gender. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with two students with high mathematical abilities, one male and one female, selected purposively. Data were collected through a mathematical critical thinking ability test on the topic of circle equations and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña based on the FRISCO indicators (Focus, Reason, Inference, Situation, Clarity, and Overview). The results showed that both subjects were able to fulfill all indicators of mathematical critical thinking. The differences found lay in the solution strategy, namely male students tended to use more efficient and direct steps, while female students presented more systematic and detailed solutions. However, both subjects still experienced errors in interpreting the radius in the circle equation problem and were not able to identify these errors in the final evaluation stage. These findings indicate that the mathematical critical thinking skills of high-ability students still need to be strengthened, especially in the aspects of evaluating and verifying the results of problem solving.

Abstract

Students still experience difficulties in solving story problems on the topic of equivalent comparisons, so a study is needed regarding problem-solving profiles based on logical-mathematical intelligence. This study aims to describe the problem-solving profiles of equivalent comparisons viewed from the logical-mathematical intelligence of eighth-grade students at SMPN 19 Palu. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of the study consisted of two students who were selected purposively based on the results of Olivia's (2009) logical-mathematical intelligence questionnaire, namely one student in the high category (AST) and one student in the low category (PTR). Data were collected through problem-solving tests and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using an interactive model that includes data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that AST was able to carry out all stages of problem-solving according to Polya completely and obtained correct answers (12 liters). In contrast, PTR was only able to fulfill the stage of understanding the problem, while at the stages of formulating plans, implementing solutions, and re-checking, they still experienced conceptual errors resulting in incorrect answers (5.333 liters). These findings indicate that students with high logical-mathematical intelligence have a more systematic and accurate problem-solving profile than students with low logical-mathematical intelligence.

Abstract

Students' critical thinking skills are still relatively low, mainly due to the learning process being dominated by conventional approaches, centered on lecturers, and emphasizing memorization. This condition has the potential to hinder students' readiness to face the academic and workplace demands of the 21st century. One learning model that is considered capable of addressing this problem is Project-Based Learning (PjBL). This study aims to analyze the improvement of students' critical thinking skills through the application of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in Indonesian Language courses. The study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design in the form of a pretest-posttest. The study sample consisted of 38 sixth-semester Midwifery Study Program students at Mega Buana University, Palopo, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through critical thinking skills tests, observations, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. Quantitative data analysis was conducted by comparing pretest and posttest scores, while qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed an increase in the average critical thinking skills score from 65.24 to 82.37, an increase of 17.13 points. After implementing PjBL, students were predominantly in the good and excellent categories. These findings indicate that PjBL is effective in improving students' critical thinking skills through active engagement in investigation, problem-solving, collaboration, and project development.

Abstract

Code-switching by teachers in English learning remains a topic of debate, as it is seen as aiding comprehension, but also raises concerns about increasing students' dependence on their native language. This study aims to analyze students' perceptions of teachers' use of code-switching and its impact on their dependence on Indonesian in English learning. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive study design. Thirty students were selected as participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis with the aid of NVivo software for coding and theme validation. The results indicate that students positively perceive code-switching as aiding comprehension of complex material, reducing anxiety, and increasing participation and confidence in using English. However, the use of Indonesian does not create permanent dependence. Students utilize their native language as a temporary buffer to grasp concepts before returning to English for communication and practice activities. These findings suggest that purposefully designed code-switching can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy to support comprehension, engagement, and learning independence without diminishing the use of English as the target language.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the career readiness of Mathayom 5 Tasdikiah School students in Songkhla, Thailand and 11th grade students of MA Mutma’inah Cibinong, Indonesia. This study uses a quantitative approach with a comparative design. The research sample consisted of 110 students consisting of 55 students from each school selected using a specific sampling technique. The research data were collected through a Likert-scale career readiness questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U difference test. The results showed that the career readiness of Tasdikiah School students was mostly in the high category with a percentage of 52.7%, while the career readiness of MA Mutma’inah students was mostly in the low category with a percentage of 60.0%. However, the results of the Mann-Whitney U test showed an Asymp. Sig. value of 0.392 (p > 0.05), so there was no significant difference in career readiness between the two groups of students. This finding indicates that differences in school and country contexts have not resulted in statistically significant differences in career readiness levels, so it is necessary to strengthen career development programs that are appropriate to the needs of students in each school.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the preferences of undergraduate English students in Aceh in utilizing social media as a secondary learning resource in English learning. The study used a descriptive quantitative approach with data collection techniques through questionnaires distributed to English students from several universities in Aceh. Data were analyzed descriptively to identify the types of platforms used, the purposes of use, and students' perceptions of the benefits of social media in language learning. The results show that social media plays a significant role as a supplementary learning resource outside of formal classroom learning. The most frequently used platforms include WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Telegram, and X, which are used for vocabulary development, listening and speaking practice, reading improvement, and writing skills. Students tend to choose platforms that are easily accessible, interactive, flexible, and provide authentic English content. These findings confirm that the use of social media encourages the development of digital literacy and student learning autonomy. This study provides an empirical contribution to the development of technology-based English learning strategies and serves as a reference for educators and educational institutions in integrating social media more effectively in the learning process.

Abstract

Career selection is one of the important developmental tasks during adolescence, but many students still experience difficulties in determining further education and career choices that suit their potential. Low career decision-making ability can be influenced by various factors, one of which is self-determination. This study aims to analyze the relationship between self-determination and career decision-making in grade XI students of MAN 2 Bogor City. The study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The study population was 174 students, while a sample of 121 students was determined using a random sampling technique. Data were collected using a self-determination scale adapted from the Basic Psychological Needs Scale and a career decision-making scale, then analyzed using a correlation test. The results showed that the level of self-determination of students was in the moderate category (71.1%), as was the level of career decision-making (67.9%). The analysis showed a significant positive relationship with a strong relationship strength between self-determination and career decision-making. This finding indicates that the higher the self-determination of students, the better their ability to make career decisions. Therefore, strengthening self-determination needs to be a concern in guidance and counseling services to help students plan their careers more maturely.

Abstract

Mathematics plays an important role in daily life, but students often have trouble solving word problems, especially on the topic of direct proportion. This difficulty highlights the need for a profile of students' problem-solving processes to help teachers identify where learning challenges occur. This study aims to describe the problem-solving profile for direct proportion based on the logical-mathematical intelligence of eighth-grade students at SMPN 19 Palu. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of the study were two eighth-grade students chosen based on the results of logical-mathematical intelligence questionnaire, each representing the high (AST) and low (PTR) categories. Data was collected through written tests and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using techniques of data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research results show that AST was able to complete all four stages of Polya completely and accurately with the correct answer (12 liters), while PTR only managed to understand the problem stage and made fundamental conceptual mistakes in the next stages (wrong answer: 5.333 liters). PTR also couldn't verify the answer. It was concluded that mathematical logical intelligence has a decisive influence on the quality of solving ratio problems at each stage of Polya.
