Abstract

Early reading is one of the fundamental skills that students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) need to develop in order to support their academic learning. However, some students with ASD continue to experience difficulties in reading meaningful simple words. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of magnetic board media in improving the early reading ability of a first-grade student with ASD at SLB TIJI Padang. A quantitative approach was employed using an experimental method with a Single Subject Research A-B-A design. Data were collected through early reading tests administered during each session and analyzed using visual analysis presented in graphical form. The study consisted of 12 sessions, including the (A1), the (B), and the (A2). The results demonstrated a significant improvement in the student's early reading ability after the implementation of the magnetic board media. The mean score increased from 30 during the (A1) to 76.6 in the (B), and further reached 100 in the (A2). Within-condition analysis showed that the data trend shifted from stable to increasing and returned to a stable pattern in the final phase. In addition, the between-condition analysis indicated a positive level change with a low percentage of overlapping data. These findings suggest that magnetic board media are effective in improving the early reading ability of a first-grade student with ASD at SLB TIJI Padang.

Abstract

The ability to memorize the Qur'an in children with mild intellectual disabilities faces obstacles in the aspects of memory, concentration, fluency, and accuracy of reading. This study aims to improve the ability to memorize the Qur'an through the application of the Kauny Quantum Memory method. The study used a quantitative approach with the Single Subject Research (SSR) method and an A–B design, consisting of 5 baseline sessions (A) and 8 intervention sessions (B). Data were collected through memorization ability tests covering aspects of memory, reading fluency, reading accuracy, and consistency of memorization. Data analysis was carried out visually by paying attention to the trend of direction and stability of the data in each phase. The results showed an increase in all aspects of memorization ability, namely memory by 75%, reading accuracy by 75%, reading fluency by 68.7%, and memorization consistency by 75%. The change in direction and better level of ability in the intervention phase compared to the baseline phase indicate that the application of the Kauny Quantum Memory method contributed to the improvement of the ability to memorize the Qur'an in the study subjects. These findings suggest that the method could be an alternative approach to learning to memorize the Qur'an for children with mild intellectual disabilities, although further research with broader subjects and research designs is needed to test the consistency of the findings

Abstract

Physical Education (PJOK) learning for students with intellectual disabilities requires structured, varied activities and opportunities for repeated practice because conventional movement learning methods tend to be less able to maintain attention and accommodate their learning needs. This study examines the application of circuit games in improving fundamental movement skills in PJOK learning for students with intellectual disabilities at SLB N Mandailing Natal. The study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) model of Kemmis and Taggart, which was implemented in two cycles, each consisting of four meetings. Two students with intellectual disabilities were selected purposively based on an initial assessment that showed obstacles in the locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative aspects of movement. Data were collected through observation, performance tests, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively quantitatively using percentages with a success indicator of ≥60% per student. The results of the initial assessment showed that student B obtained a score of 43% and student R 50%. After the first cycle, the scores increased to 67% and 80%. In the second cycle, media modifications were carried out by simplifying obstacles, using more attractive and appropriate tools according to students' abilities, and gradually reducing teacher assistance. As a result, student B achieved 97% and student R 100%. These findings indicate that circuit games effectively improve fundamental motor skills through activities that are adaptive, gradual, and appropriate to the learning characteristics of students with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze changes in fluent reading ability in dyslexic children through the application of the Repeated Reading method. The study used a quantitative approach with the Single Subject Research (SSR) method with an A–B design. The subject of the study was a third-grade student at SDN 31 Kumpulan Banang who had dyslexia. Data were collected through a fluency reading ability test based on indicators of reading accuracy, reading speed, and prosody, then analyzed using visual graphic analysis that included analysis within conditions and between conditions. The results showed that the subject's fluent reading ability increased after being given the Repeated Reading intervention. In the baseline condition (A), the subject's reading ability was at a stable level, while in the intervention condition (B) there was a gradual increase in ability until it reached a higher achievement compared to the initial condition. Visual analysis showed a change in direction from a flat trend in the baseline phase to an increase in the intervention phase with an overlap percentage of 0%. These findings indicate that the application of the Repeated Reading method is related to an increase in fluent reading ability in the study subject. However, because the study used an SSR design with a single subject, the results need to be understood in the context of individual changes and cannot be generalized widely.

Abstract

Finger biting behavior in students with autism spectrum disorders is a stereotypical behavior that can hinder engagement in learning and pose a risk of self-injury. This study aims to determine changes in finger biting behavior through the use of chewy tools in students with autism spectrum disorders. This study used a quantitative approach with the Single Subject Research (SSR) method with an A-B-A design involving one subject. The study was conducted in three phases: an initial baseline phase (A₁) of three sessions without intervention, an intervention phase (B) of several sessions with the use of chewy tools, and a final baseline phase (A₂) of three sessions after the intervention was stopped. Data were collected through direct observation using an observation sheet for the duration of finger biting behavior during the learning process, then analyzed using visual analysis within and between conditions. The results showed a decrease in the frequency of finger biting behavior after the use of chewy tools, as indicated by a change in the direction of the trend from increasing/stable in the baseline phase to decreasing in the intervention phase as well as the ability to maintain behavioral changes in the final baseline phase. These findings suggest that chewy tools have the potential to be used as an intervention medium to help reduce finger biting behavior in students with autism spectrum disorders in the learning context.
