Abstract

This study aims to identify the varieties of traditional herbal medicine (jamu) made from plant roots that continue to exist in Pekalongan City and to describe the traditional processing methods employed by the local community. The study adopted a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving jamu vendors, producers, and consumers in the Banjarsari Market area and its surroundings. The findings indicate that root-based jamu is still produced and consumed by the community, particularly in the forms of kunyit asam, beras kencur, ginger, temulawak, cogon grass (alang-alang), temu ireng, galangal, and lempuyang. Each type of jamu serves different health purposes, such as maintaining stamina, stimulating appetite, relieving muscle aches, improving digestion, and supporting physical recovery. The preparation process is generally carried out using simple traditional methods, including boiling, grinding, and filtering the ingredients before consumption. Nevertheless, the sustainability of traditional jamu faces several challenges, including modernization, changing consumer preferences, and the low rate of business succession among younger generations. Therefore, preservation efforts through education, innovation, and support from various stakeholders are essential to ensure that traditional jamu remains sustainable as a cultural heritage and a symbol of the local identity of Indonesian society.

This study aims to: 1) determine the forms of slang use among staff members and 2) determine the factors that influence the use of slang in the presence of Indonesian among staff members. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques include field research, semi-structured interviews and direct or covert observations. The subjects of this study were 14 staff members of the Gita Cilegon Mandiri Marching Band, including 7 female members and 7 male members. The results of the study indicate: 1) slang among staff members of the Gita Cilegon Mandiri Marching Band is something they commonly use in everyday communication, both with peers and within their environment, and 2) the use of slang among staff members of the Gita Cilegon Mandiri Marching Band influences the presence of Indonesian, resulting in a lack of familiarity with standard Indonesian and members' lack of understanding of proper spelling.

Abstract

Gugon tuhon is one form of local wisdom among the Javanese people that acts as an unwritten set of norms in regulating social interaction patterns. This study aims to describe the forms, meanings, and functions of gugon tuhon among the people of Paninggaran Subdistrict, Pekalongan Regency, with a focus on three taboos: sitting on the doorstep, eating on the bed, and lying down around Maghrib time. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with an ethnopragmatic design, combining literature studies, field observations, and in-depth interviews with traditional elders, community leaders, and the younger generation. The results show that these three taboos contain rational values covering safety, health maintenance, and religious ethics, which are presented through mystical expressions to make them easier to understand and pass down through generations. The novelty of this research lies in the effort to document local sayings in the Paninggaran area, which have rarely been touched by academic research, while also connecting them to Indonesian language and literature learning based on local wisdom. This study is expected to contribute to the preservation of oral traditions, the development of local content teaching materials, and the strengthening of character education in schools.
