Abstract

Introduction: While current research highlights student anxiety globally, limited data exists on the specific situation of Vietnamese medical students. This study addresses this gap by investigating the prevalence and contributing factors of anxiety within this population, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of their mental health experiences. Methods: Utilizing a convenience sampling technique, 400 medical students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine & Pharmacy were surveyed using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale and a custom questionnaire assessing factors contributing to anxiety. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation. Results: Findings revealed mild to moderate anxiety levels among medical students (M = 49.68 ± 11.54), with significant differences based on gender, academic year, and academic performance. Males (M = 51.27 ± 12.26) and senior students (M = 53.18 ± 12.50) reported higher anxiety levels. Key contributors to anxiety included financial concerns, major examinations, and discrepancies between perceived and desired academic performance. Notably, a strong positive correlation was found between academic performance discrepancies and anxiety levels (r = 0.888, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The study highlights a potentially higher prevalence of anxiety among medical students than previously reported, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions. Understanding the multifaceted nature of anxiety and its contributing factors is crucial for fostering a supportive learning environment, ultimately nurturing well-equipped and resilient healthcare professionals.

Abstract

Introduction: Taipa Sub-District in Palu City has a high prevalence of stunting, with 24.7% or 108 cases out of 437 toddlers measured. This makes Taipa, located in the Mamboro Health Center area, the sub-district with the highest stunting cases in Palu City. This research aims to analyze the relationship between children's health status (exclusive breastfeeding, colostrum feeding, frequency of breastfeeding, and history of infectious diseases) and the incidence of stunting in the Mamboro Health Center working area. Methods: This quantitative study uses a case-control design to determine the magnitude of risk factors related to children's health status and the incidence of stunting in toddlers within the Mamboro Health Center working area. The total sample comprised 204 toddlers, including 102 stunted toddlers (cases) and 102 normal toddlers (controls). Results: There is a significant relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and a history of infectious diseases with the incidence of stunting in toddlers (p<0.05). Mothers who do not provide exclusive breastfeeding have a 2.2 times higher risk of their children being stunted (OR = 2.225). Children who have experienced infectious diseases have a 1.9 times higher risk of becoming stunted (OR = 1.944). However, the frequency of breastfeeding and colostrum feeding did not show a significant relationship with stunting among toddlers in the Mamboro Health Center working area. Conclusion: The child's health status factors that are significantly related to the incidence of stunting include exclusive breastfeeding and a history of infectious diseases. These findings highlight the need for interventions promoting exclusive breastfeeding and effective management of infectious diseases to reduce stunting rates in this area.

Abstract

Introduction: The use of traditional medicines derived from the active ingredients of several types of plants is preferred by the community in treating several types of diseases. One of the plants that has been used by the community as medicine is purple leaves with the Latin name Grapthophylum pictum (L.) Griff. These leaves are traditionally used to treat rheumatism, menstruation, hemorrhoids, urinary tract infections, scabies, swelling, wounds, dermatitis, ear diseases, laxatives, and cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the total levels of secondary metabolites from purple leaf extract ethanol (PLEE) and evaluate the effect of administering PLEE on acute toxicity (LD50) in Wistar rats. Methods: This research is a laboratory experiment with a post test only controlled group design. The research subjects were 20 male Wistar rats, divided into 1 control group and 3 treatment groups, each consisting of 5 rats. The control group only received distilled water, the Treatment I group (P1) was given a suspension of the purple leaf extract test preparation at a dose of 500 mg/kg. Treatment group II (P2), received a suspension of the test preparation at a dose of 2,000 mg/kg, while Treatment group III (P3) received a suspension of the test preparation at a high dose of 5,000 mg/kg of mice. The test preparation was given orally with only one administration at the beginning of the research period and observation was carried out for 14 days. Data was obtained if the rats died after being given treatment. Results: The results showed that the total secondary metabolite content of purple leaves was alkaloids (24,725.99 mg/g), saponins (89.191 mg/g), flavonoids (6.332 mg/g) and tannins (0.884 mg/g), while based on toxicity the PLEE classification was mildly toxic with an LD50 value of 3,890 mg/kg in accordance with BPOM RI's acute toxicity potential at toxicity level 4 (oral LD50 500 – 5,000 mg/kg). Conclusion: PLEE showed the highest total content of secondary metabolites in alkaloids, and consumption of PLEE in high doses caused the death of rats with a mild toxic classification.
