Abstract

This study explores the development of pedagogical models in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) that harmoniously integrate spiritual grounding, contextual adaptability, and technological enhancement in the Society 5.0 era. Employing a mixed-methods approach, it combines philosophical analysis from classical Islamic scholars (Al-Ghazali, Ibn Khaldun) and modern educational theorists (Vygotsky, Fullan) with Design-Based Research (DBR) for instructional development. The research is conducted in three stages: (1) conceptualizing the core attributes of Religious Education 5.0, (2) designing adaptive learning modules incorporating blended learning, digital storytelling, and interfaith dialogue, and (3) evaluating their pedagogical impact through qualitative case studies and thematic analysis. The findings reveal notable improvements in student engagement, the internalization of Islamic values, and the development of interreligious empathy. The study presents a validated, transformative PAI model that is spiritually grounded, contextually relevant, and technologically responsive, contributing to the advancement of religious education in the digital era.

Abstract

The capacity to memorise plays a pivotal role in Islamic educational tradition, particularly in the preservation of the authenticity of teachings through the transmission of the Qur’an and hadith. In the literary work Ta’lim al-Muta’allim, composed by al-Zarnuji, a seminal text in its field, a range of methodologies is presented for the purpose of enhancing memory. These methodologies encompass a variety of approaches, including diligent study, augmented worship, and the ingestion of specific substances such as honey, kundar, and red wine. The present study aims to examine these methods scientifically in order to determine their relevance to contemporary findings. Utilising a literature review and content analysis approach, this study examines the text of the book Ta’lim al-Muta’allim and compares it with the results of recent scientific research in the fields of cognitive science and health. The findings of the study demonstrate that the methods employed to enhance memory in the book can be categorised into three distinct classifications. Firstly, there is a need to acknowledge the scientific methods that have been proven to be effective. Such methods include diligent study, increasing worship, and consuming honey. Secondly, methods with potential scientific validity, such as the consumption of kundar and red wine, which have shown positive results in some preliminary studies, are also recommended. Thirdly, there are methods that have yet to be scientifically validated. These include the use of a miswak, reducing food intake, and consuming foods that reduce phlegm. These findings suggest that some of the classical educational heritage in the book remains relevant and can be integrated with modern scientific approaches. Consequently, al-Zarnuji’s treatise is not only spiritually valuable but also has the potential to contribute to the development of contemporary learning methods.

Abstract

Between 2020 and 2025, Islamic education policy in the Special Region of Yogyakarta has experienced a significant transformation marked by the adoption of the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka), the digitalization of teaching and learning, and the institutionalization of religious moderation programs. This study aims to evaluate the implementation of these policies and measure their direct impact on the quality of education in madrasahs and other Islamic educational institutions. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) combined with an evaluative framework, 32 peer-reviewed articles from reputable databases (Garuda, Google Scholar, SINTA) were analyzed based on topic relevance, source credibility, and publication year. The analysis shows that 68% of madrasahs have integrated digital learning platforms, 54% have fully adopted the Independent Curriculum, and 72% have implemented structured tolerance-strengthening initiatives. Despite these advancements, persistent challenges remain, limited financial resources for private madrasahs hinder infrastructure upgrades, inadequate teacher training restricts curriculum effectiveness, and weak intergovernmental coordination reduces policy oversight efficiency. The findings underline the importance of harmonizing national education directives with local socio-cultural contexts, ensuring policies are both adaptive and participatory. The study concludes that the long-term success of Islamic education policy in Yogyakarta is contingent upon improving implementation quality at the institutional level, strengthening human resource readiness, and sustaining infrastructure support. Strategic recommendations include reformulating policies to address local needs and investing in ongoing professional development for teachers. These measures are projected to enhance educational quality, institutional resilience, and the long-term sustainability of policy outcomes in the region.

Abstract

The gap that occurs regarding the issue of adolescent character continues to be a hot topic in this country. One of the figures who is very strong in paying attention to character education in Indonesia is Hamka, for that reason it is necessary to study in depth the concept of character education according to Hamka. This research uses a library study type of research with the main source of Hamka's book. The results of the study show that Hamka calls character with the term personality. While a Great Person is someone who is able to make himself have a great personality character which includes (a) having charm, (b) being smart, (c) considering feelings, (d) being brave, (e) being wise, (f) having good views, (g) knowing himself, (h) maintaining physical health, (i) being wise in speaking, and (j) believing in oneself. Meanwhile, the relevance of Hamka's perspective on character education to contemporary Islamic education now lies in the instillation of valuable values in humans. Hamka states that personality is a collection of traits and strengths, which show a person's superiority over others. In other words, Hamka also explains that personality is a collection of intellectual traits, will, ideals and body shape. This, according to Hamka, is what sets humanity apart from others. Islamic education today remains anchored in the instillation of noble moral values, and this, of course, cannot be valued by anything. Therefore, it can be said that the current Islamic educational process remains rooted in the same principle: morality, but the difference lies in the challenges of an ever-changing era. Thus, contemporary Islamic education faces significant challenges in technological advancement if it fails to instill the character education championed by Hamka.

Abstract

The current information age encompasses all aspects of human life. Media for communication and information dissemination has developed gradually and rapidly. Information media began with print and electronic media, and has now evolved into new media. The modern form of information openness using new media is not actually contrary to Islam. Islamic law also regulates and guides Muslims not to isolate themselves from the progress of the times. This is an interesting topic to explore further regarding public information transparency through new media in relation to Islamic teachings on ethics in Islamic communication. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach. This literature review is structured descriptively using secondary data from previous studies conducted by other researchers. The results of the study indicate that public information disclosure through new media is relevant to Islamic teachings on Islamic communication ethics. The timeliness of information in new media is consistent with Islamic teachings on avoiding hate speech based on differences. The completeness of information in new media is consistent with the principles of communication and language use based on values of goodness. The reliability of information in new media is in line with the principles of communication regarding truth and patience. The accuracy of information in new media is in line with the principles of Islamic communication with filtering in receiving information (tabayyun).

Abstract

Memorizing the Qur’an and Hadith is a fundamental element of Islamic education, serving as a spiritual discipline and an academic requirement. In formal Islamic secondary schools (madrasah tsanawiyah), students are expected to achieve specific memorization targets within the national curriculum. However, many face significant obstacles that impede this process, ranging from limited reading fluency and low intrinsic motivation to insufficient parental involvement. This study explores the multifaceted role of Qur’an-Hadith teachers in overcoming such challenges among Grade IX students at MTs Negeri Kota Sorong, identifies the difficulties they encounter, and analyzes the strategies they employ. Using a qualitative approach grounded in Islamic pedagogy and supported by modern educational theory, data were collected through eight observation sessions, in-depth interviews with three Qur’an-Hadith teachers, twelve students, and four parents, as well as the analysis of lesson plans, assessment records, and memorization logs. The data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s interactive model, with validity ensured through triangulation of sources and methods. The findings reveal that teachers function as motivators by offering praise, grades, and rewards; as facilitators by employing talaqqi and sima’i methods alongside audiovisual aids and adaptive approaches for varying abilities; as mentors by providing individual guidance outside class hours; and as evaluators through regular oral tests and recitation submissions. The challenges they face include heterogeneous reading skills, fluctuating motivation, and weak parental engagement. Strategies to address these involve collective repetition, contextualization of verses, memorization competitions, and sustained communication with parents. This study offers a conceptual framework that links classroom practices with broader educational theory, emphasizing the necessity of a synergistic approach between teachers, students, and parents for effective memorization. Its implications extend to curriculum design, teacher professional development, and community involvement in Qur’an and Hadith memorization initiatives.

Abstract

This study analyzes the implementation of zakat fitrah habituation at MAN Sorong and its impact on student character development within the Islamic character education framework. Zakat fitrah, as a fundamental Islamic obligation, serves not only as worship but also as a critical vehicle for fostering moral development and social responsibility. This qualitative case study employed participatory observation, in-depth interviews with Fiqh teachers, student council supervisors, and mosque takmir, and documentation of zakat fitrah activities involving 44 students from grades XI and XII. The findings reveal that zakat fitrah habituation operates through five key implementation strategies: intensive socialization and education, structured collection mechanisms, transparent distribution processes, exemplary leadership modeling, and strategic institutional collaboration with local mosques. The program significantly enhances multiple dimensions of character development, including social awareness, empathy, gratitude, discipline, responsibility, and collaborative skills. Students developed enhanced self-confidence, civic identity, and leadership capabilities through direct involvement in collection and distribution processes. The experiential learning approach creates meaningful community connections while reinforcing Islamic values and moral principles. Implementation challenges including insufficient awareness, resource constraints, and varying student economic circumstances were successfully addressed through intensive socialization programs, creative fundraising initiatives, and strategic partnerships with zakat institutions. The multi-stakeholder collaboration model proved effective in creating sustainable character development outcomes while strengthening school-community relationships. However, the study acknowledges limitations, including single-site design and qualitative methodology constraints, which limit generalizability. The research concludes that systematic integration of zakat fitrah habituation within Islamic educational settings provides an effective framework for comprehensive character education, producing students with increased empathy, social responsibility, and civic engagement. These findings have significant implications for Islamic educational institutions seeking evidence-based approaches to character development.

Abstract

The phenomenon of moral degradation among Indonesia’s young generation is increasingly alarming, marked by rampant deviant behavior, misuse of digital technology, and rising intolerance within educational settings. This situation demands strategic efforts to build Islamic character that remains relevant to the challenges of the modern era. This study aims to analyze the role, implementation, and instructional methods of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in shaping students’ Islamic character, while identifying best practices for adaptation. Employing a qualitative approach through literature and field studies, data were collected via in-depth interviews, observations, and analysis of curriculum documents and learning modules. The findings reveal that PAI plays a central role in moral development by integrating the values of faith, piety, and noble character, supported by innovative methods such as cooperative learning, problem-based learning, gamification, and blended learning. Family and community involvement strengthen value internalization, while integrating Islamic digital literacy ensures PAI remains relevant amid globalization. These findings affirm that PAI is not merely a school subject, but the front line in safeguarding the nation’s moral integrity.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of implementing the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) cooperative model assisted by Baamboozle media on student learning outcomes in Islamic Religious Education and Character Education for eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Lamasi. This research employs a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test/post-test nonequivalent control group design. The population comprises all eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Lamasi in the 2024/2025 academic year. Purposive sampling was utilized, yielding 52 students divided into experimental (26 students) and control groups (26 students). Data collection employed validated instruments including pre-tests and post-tests, analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS. Results demonstrated significant improvement in the experimental group's post-test scores (mean: 85.77) compared to the control group (mean: 74.23), representing increases from pre-test scores of 57 and 56 respectively. The independent sample t-test revealed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, confirming H₀ rejection and H₁ acceptance. This indicates that the TGT cooperative model assisted by Baamboozle media is significantly more effective than conventional learning methods in enhancing Islamic Religious Education and Character Education learning outcomes.
