Abstract

Research on critical and spatial thinking in mathematics in Indonesia has experienced significant development over the past decade. Initially, most studies emphasized the characteristics and indicators of critical thinking, while research on spatial abilities was relatively limited. However, as 21st-century education increasingly demands higher-order thinking skills, including the ability to visualize, interpret, and analyze spatial relationships, interest in spatial thinking research has grown. This study aims to analyze the trends and patterns of research on the critical and spatial thinking profiles in mathematics education in Indonesia using bibliometric analysis with VOSviewer. The data were collected from the Dimensions AI database by searching the keyword “Critical and spatial thinking profile in mathematics in Indonesia.” A total of 291 documents were initially identified, and after filtering by publication year (2015–2025) and relevance, 279 were selected for analysis. The results show a consistent increase in publication and citation activity, especially from 2018 to 2024, with 24 citations recorded in 2025 alone. Network visualization reveals strong linkages between frequently used terms, indicating interconnected research themes across different studies and years. Overlay visualization highlights shifts in research focus over time, while density visualization identifies clusters with the highest publication concentration. These three visualization techniques offer comprehensive insights into the development of this research area. They assist researchers in discovering new themes, identifying gaps in the literature, and uncovering potential directions for future studies, especially in the context of incorporating critical and spatial thinking abilities into effective mathematics instruction across different levels of education.

Abstract

This pre-study explores the reading interest of elementary school students and the potential integration of local wisdom into literacy practices. The background of this study stems from preliminary findings that reveal low reading interest among second-grade students in an elementary school. Most students prefer picture books and show limited engagement with traditional texts, especially when lacking visual appeal. Furthermore, observations and teacher interviews indicate that cultural elements such as local traditions and values—particularly from Madura—are rarely included in classroom reading materials. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through questionnaires, classroom observations, and teacher interviews. The results show that 70% of students read only when instructed, and over 80% express interest in books that include illustrations and culturally familiar content. Teachers acknowledge the need for relevant reading materials that combine engaging storytelling with the richness of local culture. They believe such materials can promote reading habits while strengthening students’ cultural identity. This study highlights a significant gap in culturally responsive reading materials for young learners. It suggests the importance of developing culturally integrated picture storybooks to enhance reading interest. Incorporating local wisdom into early literacy development can not only foster students’ engagement in reading but also preserve cultural heritage. The findings provide a basis for future development of reading materials rooted in local traditions and values.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the findings of students' difficulties in understanding the concept of food chains in the IPAS subject. The fact that the current generation is a digital generation accustomed to technology also supports the importance of innovation in learning. Learning resources that might aid students in comprehending abstract ideas are necessary because many educators continue to employ traditional teaching techniques. This research attempts to examine how well digital diorama media works as an educational innovation that can improve students' comprehension of the food chain concept. This study utilized a quasi-experimental approach using a non-equivalent control group design. In this study, sixty fifth-graders from Karawang Regency's SD Puri Artha participated. Students were split up into two groups: the experimental group used digital diorama material, and the control group used traditional means. Data were obtained through concept understanding tests before and after the intervention, as well as observations and interviews. According to the study's findings, pupils who used digital dioramas to learn had a significantly higher conceptual grasp than those who used traditional methods (p<0.05). Students can more easily comprehend the relationships between organisms in the food chain with the help of digital diorama media, which can offer crisper visuals. Additionally, pupils actively participate in the learning process and exhibit interest in it. The conclusion of this study is that digital diorama media is not only effective in enhancing students' understanding of the food chain concept but also in increasing students' learning motivation.

Abstract

Pancasila education in elementary schools still focuses on the cognitive aspect and has not yet fully succeeded in shaping students' behavior in accordance with Pancasila values. This reflects the need for a more contextual approach so that students can internalize these values through a love for local culture and wisdom. This study aims to examine the effect of applying the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model combined with a Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach on the civic learning achievement of fifth-grade students at SDN Panaragan 1, Bogor City. The study employed a quasi-experimental method using a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The subjects consisted of two groups: class VA consisting of 33 students as the experimental group receiving PBL integrated with CRT, and class VB consisting of 33 students as the control group taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through a 25-item multiple-choice test that had been previously validated and tested for reliability. The results showed that the average N-Gain score in the experimental group was 77, while the control group scored 69. A t-test revealed that the t_calculated value (2.68) was greater than the t_table value (1.99773), indicating a significant effect of integrating PBL and CRT on students' civic learning outcomes. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the use of the PBL model combined with the CRT approach effectively enhances students' enthusiasm, participation, interest, and learning achievement in Pancasila education. Therefore, it is recommended that this integration of PBL and CRT be implemented in other classes and schools.

Abstract

The comprehension of the concept of fractions represents a fundamental challenge in the domain of mathematics, persisting even at the elementary school level. The challenges encountered in comprehending fractions frequently stem from the manner in which abstract concepts are conveyed and the pedagogical approaches employed, which do not effectively align with students' experiential knowledge. The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) model, which utilizes rocket mini-set manipulative media, in fostering comprehension of the concept of fractions among grade V elementary school students. The research employed a quantitative approach, utilizing a quasi-experimental design of the pretest-posttest control group type. The subjects of the research study were divided into two groups: an experimental group that learned using the RME model with rocket mini-set media and a control group that used conventional learning methods. The instruments utilized in this study encompassed both written tests and observation sheets. The findings indicated a substantial discrepancy in the mean posttest scores between the experimental and control groups. Learners who were instructed via the RME model, which is predicated on rocket mini-manipulative media, demonstrated a greater increase in their comprehension of fraction concepts in comparison to learners who were instructed via conventional methods. This finding indicates that the incorporation of manipulative media within the RME approach facilitates a more meaningful and contextual learning experience for students, thereby assisting them in comprehending mathematical concepts more concretely. The present study offers the following recommendations.

Abstract

Early reading ability is a crucial stage in primary education as it lays the foundation for students’ literacy development at the next levels. However, many first-grade students struggle with letter recognition, distinguishing similarly shaped letters, spelling words correctly, and understanding texts. This study aims to identify early reading difficulties among first-grade students at SDN Keranggan, South Tangerang. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method using observation, interviews, and document analysis as data collection techniques. The findings indicate that several students face obstacles in recognizing letters, spelling words accurately, and comprehending reading materials. These difficulties arise due to a lack of practice at home and low learning motivation. Furthermore, students exhibit challenges in distinguishing visually similar letters, such as "b" and "d" or "p" and "q," which leads to errors in reading accuracy. To address these issues, teachers implement various strategies, including visual media, multisensory approaches, and picture-based reading exercises, which have shown a positive impact on students' reading proficiency. Additionally, parental involvement plays a crucial role in supporting children’s reading development, with activities such as reading together, using interactive learning tools, and fostering a reading-friendly environment. With adequate support from both the school and home environments, early reading difficulties can be minimized, allowing students to develop effectively and comprehend texts proficiently.
