Abstract

Selectivity is a standard of the level of friendliness of a fishing gear that is reviewed based on the diversity of catches obtained. Nowadays, fishing gear construction and techniques are developed to obtain selective fishing methods. This study compared the selectivity of traps and push nets in glass eel fishing in the Cikaso River, Indonesia. The study was conducted from December 2020 to April 2021. The catch diversity index and relative abundance were used to analyze the selectivity of catch diversity in both fishing gears. Comparative analysis shows that push nets have slightly better selectivity than traps. However, the study's overall results showed a fairly good selectivity of both fishing gears in catching glass eels (Anguilla spp.) as their main catch target.

Abstract

Palm oil is a key global commodity, accounting for nearly 60% of the global vegetable oil trade. However, it faces significant criticism from Europe and the US due to issues such as deforestation, illegal resettlement, forest burning, wildlife endangerment, and human rights violations. Recently, the Covid-19 pandemic posed additional challenges, disrupting production through labor restrictions. This study explores Malaysia’s responses to these challenges, including those posed by the pandemic. Employing a qualitative exploratory design, data were gathered through document analysis and semi-structured interviews, analyzed using inductive thematic analysis with Atlas.ti 8 software. The findings highlight Malaysia's strategies, such as the Sustainable Palm Oil Manifesto, the establishment of the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries, campaigns against anti-palm oil propaganda, and the creation of palm oil-related institutions, alongside measures to address the Covid-19 crisis. Malaysia’s responses emphasize sustainable agricultural practices aligned with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil principles while adapting to pandemic-related disruptions. These efforts demonstrate the nation’s commitment to balancing economic priorities with sustainability and resilience in the face of global challenges.

Abstract

Learning the forehand topspin stroke is essential for students in the Physical Education and Health program at Musamus University, Merauke, as it underpins advanced tennis skills and performance. This study identifies challenges faced by students in mastering this technique, including unbalanced body positions, difficulties in selecting proper racket grips, and limited access to facilities and tools. The research employed a quantitative developmental approach, collecting data from 23 student respondents through a questionnaire focusing on body positioning, racket grip, technique understanding, and facility availability. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed that 75% of students struggled with unbalanced body positions, 70% lacked preparation, and 50% faced concentration issues. Furthermore, 60% reported confusion with racket grip selection, while 80% cited inadequate facilities as a major barrier. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions, such as improved training programs, enhanced resources, and clearer instructional methods, to address these challenges. This research underscores the importance of addressing these obstacles to optimize student learning outcomes in tennis skill acquisition.

Abstract

Palm sap, the primary raw material for palm sugar and other derivative products, often faces quality issues due to the presence of solid particles, dirt, and microorganisms that accelerate fermentation and spoilage. This study aimed to design and construct a stainless steel filtration device based on the Buchner method to enhance the cleanliness and quality of palm sap. The filtration system employs a vacuum mechanism to expedite the separation of solid impurities, improving efficiency over conventional gravity methods. Laboratory-scale testing evaluated filtration capacity, clarity, and process time efficiency. Results demonstrated that the device significantly increased sap clarity while reducing filtration time. Additionally, the stainless steel construction proved easy to clean and durable for repeated use. This innovation benefits traditional Minahasa farmers in North Sulawesi, enabling them to produce higher-quality palm sugar. The filtration process effectively reduced dust and water content while increasing sugar concentration to 21.3 Brix without requiring extensive cooking. The use of the Buchner method and SS304 stainless steel construction ensures consistent filtration quality, offering a practical solution to improve palm sap processing and enhance farmers' incomes.

Abstract

This research examines the influence of the South China Sea (SCS) conflict on Indonesia's resilience and security. Indonesia began to be drawn into the SCS conflict in 2010, after China claimed Indonesia's EEZ in the northern region, specifically the Natuna Islands. China's unilateral claims continued and peaked in 2016 when Chinese fishing vessels carried out illegal fishing activities in Natuna waters. Until now, Chinese ships still often enter Indonesia's borders. China's assertive behavior is considered an action that violates Indonesia's national sovereignty, therefore Indonesia is trying to maintain and secure its sovereignty and national interests in the Natuna Islands even though it is not part of the countries in dispute. By using qualitative research methods that combine the strengths of primary and secondary data, the findings show that if left unchecked, SCS conflicts could threaten Indonesia's resilience, security and sovereignty. Under Joko Widodo's government, Indonesia responded to the SCS conflict through diplomatic efforts and military alertness.
