Abstract

Breast milk (ASI) is a fat emulsion in a solution of proteins, lactose, and organic salts secreted by the mother’s mammary glands as the primary food for infants. A common problem arises when breast milk production is not optimal, causing infants to receive an insufficient amount of milk, which may lead to frequent hunger and hinder their growth and development. Midwives play a crucial role in providing education to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to prepare for the lactation period by increasing breast milk production. This community service activity was delivered to midwives at PMB Latifah Nur with the aim of enhancing their knowledge regarding improving breast milk production and preparing for the lactation period early—starting from family planning, during pregnancy, and throughout breastfeeding. As midwives, providing attention to infant growth and development by ensuring adequate breast milk intake is an essential responsibility supported through this community service program. The activity was conducted on February 22, 2025. The methods included health education, demonstrations of proper breastfeeding techniques, the use of local plants to support milk production, hands-on oxytocin massage practice, and an interactive question-and-answer session. Evaluation was carried out using pre-tests and post-tests to measure improvements in participants’ understanding. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge regarding factors affecting breast milk production, breast care techniques, and steps to stimulate oxytocin and prolactin hormones. Participants also reported improved confidence in applying lactation practices in daily life. This activity is expected to become a sustainable program to support successful breastfeeding and improve the health status of mothers and infants

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a major non-communicable disease and remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia, including in Bukittinggi City. Situation analysis in 2022 and health problem review in 2024 showed that DM consistently ranks within the top five health priorities in this region. Health Office reports indicate increasing DM cases from 2022 to 2024, while the Minimum Service Standards achievement exceeded 100%. This suggests that administrative achievement does not fully reflect effective program implementation. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of the DM control program in Bukittinggi City. A descriptive evaluation was conducted through structured interviews with 12 program officers from the Health Office and community health centers. The assessment covered four evaluation components: input, process, output, and outcome. Results showed that the program generally followed national guidelines but encountered several challenges. For input, human resources, facilities (63.6%), and funding (54.5%) were considered adequate; however, most officers had not received specific DM training (81.8%) and still had multiple responsibilities (66.7%). Regarding process, early detection, education, and monitoring activities were implemented, yet planning involvement remained limited (72.7%). At the output level, core activities were running, but some health centers had not conducted DM surveillance or developed community referrals (28.6%). Regarding outcomes, the program contributed to improved patient quality of life (54.5%), although community participation was still low. Strengthening the program is expected through improved staff capacity and proportional task assignment, greater involvement in planning, strengthened surveillance and community networks, and increased community participation through education.

Abstract

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is collection of physical, psychological, and behavioral symptoms that occur before menstruation and can disrupt daily activities, especially in adolescent girls. Poor diet and low physical activity are two lifestyle factors that can trigger or worsen PMS symptoms. This study aims to determine the relationship between diet and physical activity with the incidence of PMS 10th grade female adolescents at SMK Fania Salsabila, Jambi City. The method used is quantitative study with crosssectional approach. Total 60 respondents were selected using proportional random sampling techniques from total population 120 female students. The study was conducted in May 2025. Data were collected using Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), and Shortened Premenstrual Assessment Form (SPAF). Data analysis was carried out univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test. The results of the study showed that the majority of respondents had poor eating patterns, namely 45 respondents (75.0%), low physical activity levels were 38 respondents (63.3%), and severe PMS symptoms were 29 respondents (48.3%). There was a significant relationship between eating patterns and the incidence of PMS (p < 0.05), as well as between physical activity and the incidence of PMS (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that adolescents with unhealthy eating patterns and low physical activity have higher risk of experiencing PMS with moderate to severe symptoms. This study recommends health education and school-based interventions regarding the importance of healthy lifestyle to prevent or reduce the impact of PMS on adolescents.

Abstract

Adolescents are in a period of rapid growth and development, requiring adequate nutritional intake and balanced physical activity to support health and academic performance. Breakfast plays an essential role in providing energy for the brain, while physical activity contributes to physical fitness and cognitive function. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between breakfast patterns and physical activity with students’ learning achievement at SMA Negeri 1 Tungkal Jaya, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. Data collection was conducted from July 22 to 24, 2025. This study employed a cross-sectional design involving 58 tenth-grade students selected through random sampling. Data on breakfast patterns were obtained using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), physical activity levels were measured using the Physical Activity Level (PAL) method, and learning achievement was assessed based on the average semester report card scores. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that most students had a frequent breakfast pattern (96.6%), a moderate level of physical activity (60.3%), and good learning achievement (67.2%). Statistical analysis indicated a significant relationship between breakfast patterns and learning achievement (p = 0.041), as well as between physical activity and learning achievement (p = 0.000). These findings suggest that regular breakfast consumption and adequate physical activity play an important role in supporting students’ academic achievement. Therefore, promoting healthy breakfast habits and regular physical activity among adolescents is essential to enhance academic performance.

Abstract

Hospital nutrition services are crucial for supporting the recovery of inpatients, but a common problem is the amount of food waste left by patients. This study aimed to determine the relationship between patient characteristics (gender, age) and food acceptability with food waste at Mayjen H.A. Thalib Regional General Hospital, Sungai Penuh City. This descriptive quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach involved 43 patients selected using total sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires, checklists, and the Comstock scale for measuring food waste. Analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test, conducted from May 15 to June 11, 2025. Results showed that the majority of respondents were female (55.8%), with most in the early elderly category (46.5%). Most respondents had fair food acceptability (48.8%), and the majority left large amounts of food waste (74.4%). Analysis revealed that patient characteristics such as gender (p=0.423) and age (p=0.472) had no significant relationship with food waste. However, food acceptability had a significant relationship with food waste (p<0.000), indicating that better food acceptability resulted in less food waste
