Abstract

Dayak onion (Eleutherine palmifolia (L.) Merr.) is one of the typical Central Kalimantan plants that has been hereditary used by Dayak people as traditional medicine. Generally, only parts of dayak onion bulbs are used while the onion leaves are often discarded and rarely used. Dayak onion leaves contain secondary metabolites, one of them is flavonoids. Flavonoid compounds have many benefits, namely as an antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anticancer. The purpose of this study was to determine the total flavonoid content contained in etahanol extraction, n-hexane fraction, chloroforom fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, 70% ethanol fraction and dayak onion leaf water fraction. Extraction of onion dayak leaves using maceration method with 70% ethanol as solvent. After extraction the fraction is carried out with a liquid-liquid extract method and different polarity of solvent. The product of extraction and fractionation were measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The quantitative analysis of total flavonoid content from the highest level of onion dayak fraction chloroform fraction 85,478% ± 0,0019, then n-hexane fraction 60,171% ± 0,0010, water fraction 32,671% ± 0,0005, ethyl acetate fraction 27,934% ± 0, 0002, 70% ethanol extract 15,348% ± 0,0001, and the lowest ethanol 70% fraction 10,104% ± 0,0003.

Abstract

Hypertriglyceridemia is a condition when there is an increase in triglyceride levels in the blood. Hypertriglyceridemia can cause heart problems. One of the plants that can be used as medicine is the root plant kaik-kaik (Uncaria cordata (lour.) Merr). This study aims to determine the effect of giving ethanol extract of kaik-kaik (Uncaria cordata (lour.) Merr) leaves on serum triglyceride levels of male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The parameters used were serum triglyceride levels of male white rats induced by high fat feed, namely quail egg yolk as much as 10 ml/kgBB. This study used 18 male white rats which were divided into 6 groups with 3 rats per group. The normal group was fed only with rats and Na CMC suspension, the negative group was given high-fat feed induction and Na CMC suspension. The positive group was given high-fat feed induction and 0.9 mg/kgBB of atorvastatin suspension. The treatment group was given high-fat feed and a suspension of ethanol extract of kaik-kaik root leaves at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBB as much as 1% of body weight given orally. The method used was colorimetric enzymatic using a Mindray® photometer (BA-88A) at a wavelength of 510 nm. Triglyceride level data on days 0, 15, 22 and 29 were analyzed by one-way ANOVA test and repeated ANOVA. The results showed that the ethanol extract of kaik-kaik root (Uncaria cordata (Lour.) Merr) leaves at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kgBB had an effect in reducing serum triglyceride levels of male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) indicated by differences. which was significant (p <0.05) with negative control and showed activity to decrease triglyceride levels which was not significantly different (p> 0.05) with atorvastatin.

Abstract

Avobenzone and octinoxate are often used as a combination of organic UV filters in sunscreen. At high exposure to UV light, these UV filters can be degraded so that their sunscreen’s effectiveness is reduced. Several studies reported that the combination of plant extracts with synthetic UV filters could increase sunscreen's SPF. Mango leaves contain high levels of flavonoids and in several studies have been shown to have photoprotective activity with good Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values. The Manalagi mango plant is a type of mango that is widely planted in yards, so it's easy to get the raw materials. This study aims to determine the effect of manalagi mango leaf extract with a concentration of 1, 3, and 5% on the physical quality (pH, viscosity, spreadability) and sunscreen activity (SPF, %TE, %TP) of sunscreen emulgel containing avobenzone and octinoxate. This study showes that increasing the concentration of manalagi mango leaf extract reduced the pH and viscosity of the preparation, and significantly increased the spreadability of all formulas. Besides that, it can also increase the SPF value and decrease the %TE and %TP values. The emulgel formula that had the highest sunscreen activity was F3 with an extract concentration of 5%, had an SPF value of 30.597 ± 0.600, %TE 0.0001 ± 0.0001, and %TP 0.0038 ± 0.0016.

Abstract

Harvest time influences the formation of optimal active compound content in the areal parts in plant. It is known that differences in harvest time can affect the quality and quantity of traditional plant. Flavonoids are known to be active metabolites in Orthosiphon aristatus with a wide range of bioactivity. This research aims to determine the best harvest time for Orthosiphon aristatus leaves in order to obtain optimal simplicia quality. Plants were harvested in in the morning (06.00-07.00 WIB), in the afternoon (12.00-13.00 WIB) and in the evening (17.00-18.00 WIB). The picked leaves are then sorted, washed and dried using a drying oven before each simplicia is extracted. Extraction uses a maceration technique with 96% ethanol solvent. The simplicia and extracts obtained were analyzed for organoleptic, yield, drying loss and qualitative and quantitative analysis of total flavonoid compounds. Qualitative identification of flavonoids used dilute NaOH, Wilstater Cyanidin, and AlCl3 reagents, while for quantification total flavonoid levels were measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometry as Quercetin Equivalent. The difference in harvest time did not affect the organoleptic properties of leaves. The drying loss of simplicia meets the requirements in the Indonesian Herbal Pharmacopoeia Edition II (less than 10% w/w). The highest yield of simplicia (23.8% w/w) and extract (11.3% w/w) was produced during the harvest time of 12.00-13.00 WIB, followed by harvesting at 17.00-18.00 and 06.00-07.00 WIB. All extracts contain flavonoids, while the total flavonoid content in each extract showed significant differences. The highest total flavonoid content (4.423+0.029 mgQE/g extract) was related at the harvest time of 17.00-18.00 WIB and the lowest value (4.331+ 0.026 mgQE/g extract) was recorded at the harvest time of 06.00-07.00 WIB. Our findings in Orthosiphon aristatus, may pave the route towards the optimization of quality and quantity by selecting the best harvesting time of the plants.

Abstract

The fungus Candida albicans is one of the causes of mouth ulcer whose growth can be inhibited through the activity of saga leaf extract which contains saponin and flavonoid compounds. One of the efforts to facilitate the use of ethanolic extract of saga leaves is to make it into edible film candy preparations. This study aims to evaluate the physical properties of edible film candies containing an ethanol extract of saga leaf with varying concentrations of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). The ethanol extract of saga leaves was prepared using the maceration method with 70% alcohol, resulting in a 5% concentration of ethanol extract of saga leaves. The HPMC concentrations used varied between 3.5%, 2.5%, and 1.5%. Subsequently, the resulting edible film underwent physical property tests, including organoleptic evaluations, moisture content, pH, thickness, weight determination, and dissolution time. The analysis revealed that the edible film exhibited a thin shape and a blackish-green color, along with a distinctive aroma of the extracts and sweet, bitter, and minty flavors. The pH of the edible film was 6, with a moisture content of less than 20%, and a fold resistance of less than 100. Moreover, it only melted without dissolving. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant difference in the thickness and weight of the edible film among the variations in HPMC concentration. In conclusion, the comparison of HPMC concentration affects the physical properties of edible film candy containing ethanol extract of saga leaves, and HPMC concentration of 2.5% is a suitable choice to meet the requirements of edible film according to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI).

Abstract

Antibiotics are medications that physicians often prescribe to treat and prevent bacterial infections. Antibiotic resistance may be predisposed by improper antibiotic usage practices. The public’s ignorance about the proper use of antibiotics is the cause of this. The quality of a patient’s health will improve if antibiotics are used judiciously and in accordance with prescribed guidelines. If antibiotics are not used as directed, their efficacy will be diminished and the expense of recovery therapy will rise. To guarantee treatment efficiency and avoid resistance, it is essential to understand and be aware of the patients receiving antibiotics. This research sought to determine the efficacy of leaflet media in Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands Province, in promoting antibiotic use knowledge. A validity-tested questionnaire from previous research served as the study’s instrument. Quasi-experimental in nature, this kind of study uses a pretest-posttest design involving only one group. It also has a quantitative analytical focus. An unintentional sampling strategy combined with a non-random sampling method was employed in the study to acquire data. 166 people served as the study’s subjects. A questionnaire was used as the measuring tool in the study. It was sent to the participants’ community in two assessments, one month apart, and included leaflet media as an intervention. Analytical tests, both univariate and bivariate, were used to examine the data. The results show that there is a substantial difference in knowledge between the pretest and posttest, and that leaflet media is successful in increasing people’s awareness of antibiotics in Bangka Regency. The P-value is 0.001< 0.05.

Abstract

Microcrystalline cellulose is still imported by the Pharmaceutical Industry in Indonesia even though Indonesia has large natural resources but they have not been utilized optimally. Microcrystalline cellulose can be obtained from residue (extraction dregs) in the lotus plant extraction process, namely in the form of simplicia powder which will not be used again (organic solid waste). This research aims to obtain microcrystalline cellulose from several parts of the white lotus plant (Nymphaea nouchali Burm. F.) using the enzymatic hydrolysis method using cellulase from the termite Coptotermes sp., then the quality of the powder will be tested and compared with Avicel PH 101. Each part The white lotus is extracted, then the residue is delignified to obtain α-cellulose, then hydrolyzed with crude extract from Coptotermes sp termite cellulase. so that microcrystalline cellulose is obtained which will then be characterized and compared with the commercial version, namely Avicel® PH 101. The highest yield of microcrystalline cellulose is found in leaves with a yield of 95.3%, followed by leaf stalks 89.3%, flower stalks 75.7%, and the yield lowest in interest with a percentage of 74%. The physical characteristics in the form of color reaction, organoleptics, solubility and pH of white lotus microcrystalline cellulose powder show similarities with the comparison standard. It can be concluded that microcrystalline cellulose powder from several parts of the white lotus plant can be an alternative in obtaining cellulose raw materials from natural sources.
