Abstract

Environmental degradation driven by low community awareness and limited sustainable practices poses a critical challenge for local development. This community engagement program aims to bridge the gap between environmental knowledge (eco-literacy) and practical action (eco-action) by empowering residents to innovate environmentally friendly products. Specifically, the program integrates eco-literacy training with hands-on technical skills in ecoprint production and the conversion of used cooking oil into eco-friendly candles. The activities, conducted in Paya Village, Pesawaran Regency, involved 60 participants, including fifth-grade elementary students, housewives, and village youth groups. A participatory action approach was implemented through three main stages: (1) socialization to enhance eco-literacy, (2) direct training on eco-product innovation, and (3) mentoring and evaluation of product quality and sustainability impact. The outcomes demonstrate a significant improvement in participants’ eco-literacy and technical competence in creating value-added eco-products, utilizing leaf and flower waste for ecoprint designs and used cooking oil for aromatic candles. Beyond waste reduction, the initiative fostered alternative income opportunities and reinforced intergenerational collaboration between youth and adults. The novelty of this program lies in its dual integration of eco-literacy education and product innovation through intergenerational learning, advancing previous community service models that typically focused on either environmental education or product-based empowerment. This approach highlights the transformative potential of linking environmental awareness with entrepreneurial sustainability and recommends replication in other community-based economic–ecological resilience programs.

Abstract

This study aims to strengthen community awareness of the importance of early childhood education through a participatory learning motivation program facilitated by university students in Sukaraja Village, West Lampung, Indonesia. Using a descriptive qualitative design with a participatory approach, the research involved 15 children aged 4-6 years and 10 parents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, field observations, and documentation, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model supported by triangulation to ensure validity. The findings demonstrate that participatory learning activities significantly enhanced children’s enthusiasm, parental involvement, and collective community awareness toward early education. The program successfully integrated intrinsic and extrinsic motivation by combining play-based methods, peer interaction, and contextual learning environments. Furthermore, two informal learning groups emerged as a sustainable community-driven initiative after the program ended. The study contributes a novel participatory motivation framework that integrates educational awareness, family engagement, and community empowerment to promote inclusive early education in rural contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of an economic ecobrick program conducted by community service students (KKN) in Sumur Batu Village, Teluk Betung Utara District, Bandar Lampung. The program aimed to reduce plastic waste while fostering community empowerment through creative and environmentally friendly activities. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through. Interviews, observations, and documentation during a 30-day period of engagement. The findings show that community participation, particularly from local women’s groups (PKK), was highly enthusiastic. Several creative products were successfully produced, including keychains, headbands, and decorative mirrors made from household plastic waste, as well as compact ecobrick bottles that served as simple building prototypes. Environmentally, the program contributed to reducing plastic waste and raising community awareness about sustainable waste management. Economically, the products demonstrated initial potential as marketable items, although their development remained limited by the availability of raw materials and variations in product design. In conclusion, the ecobrick program not only functioned as a solution for plastic waste management but also as a means of fostering local creative economy initiatives. The program’s sustainability requires continued support from community organizations and local government

Abstract

This study investigates the utilization of eco-enzyme soap as a medium for empowerment and sustainable environmental education, addressing the growing need for community-based approaches to environmental awareness and waste management in developing regions. Grounded in the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the research aimed to explore how eco-enzyme soap production can function as both an educational innovation and a tool for socio-environmental empowerment. A participatory action research (PAR) design was employed, involving 25 purposively selected participants consisting of postgraduate students, teachers, and local community members in Palembang, Indonesia. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and participatory workshops, then analyzed thematically using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework. The results reveal that the eco-enzyme initiative enhanced environmental literacy, strengthened community collaboration, and generated economic value through small-scale entrepreneurship while simultaneously reducing household waste. Participants demonstrated improved understanding of scientific concepts such as fermentation and enzyme activity, along with increased awareness of sustainable living and collective responsibility. The findings confirm that eco-enzyme projects not only serve as effective pedagogical models integrating theory and practice but also promote empowerment through active engagement, leadership, and gender-inclusive participation. This study concludes that the integration of eco-enzyme production into educational and community programs provides a transformative framework for linking environmental science, social innovation, and sustainability. The implications emphasize that eco-enzyme initiatives can be institutionalized as scalable models for green education and local empowerment, informing policy development, curriculum innovation, and future research on community-based sustainability practices across diverse socio-educational contexts.

Abstract

The increasing problem of plastic waste demands innovative solutions that integrate environmental and educational aspects, particularly in fostering creative attitudes among biology education students as future teachers. This study aims to explore the utilization of plastic waste as an educational product to encourage students’ creative attitudes, focusing on five indicators: curiosity, imagination, openness to diversity, risk-taking, and appreciation. A descriptive qualitative design was employed, involving 40 undergraduate biology education students enrolled in the Biology Learning Media Development course. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis of students’ educational products, and were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model with source and method triangulation to ensure validity. The findings revealed that imagination (80–85%) and appreciation (85–90%) were the most dominant indicators, while curiosity and openness to diversity were categorized as high, and risk-taking was relatively low (60–68%). One of the most notable products was the ecobrick pillow, designed as a dual-function medium: a creative biology learning tool and a campaign for environmental awareness. These results highlight that project-based learning through plastic waste recycling not only produces innovative media but also enhances affective dimensions such as creativity, collaboration, and environmental literacy. The implication of this study emphasizes the need to integrate project-based recycling strategies into higher education curricula as a sustainable education model aligned with the frameworks of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

Abstract

Syed Sheikh Ahmad bin Muhammad Zain Al-Fatani (1856-1908) is recognized as one of the most significant Muslim intellectuals from the Malay Archipelago whose educational thought has profoundly influenced the transformation of Islamic education in Southeast Asia. This article examines Al-Fatani's educational philosophy within the framework of reform and modernism, employing a historical-philosophical analysis of his major works and intellectual network. The study finds that Al-Fatani laid crucial groundwork for transforming the traditional pondok (Islamic boarding school) system into a more structured, rational, and contextually responsive educational model. His reformist ideas encompass three main dimensions: (1) a critical reassessment of the traditional dichotomy between religious and secular knowledge, advocating instead for an integrated curriculum that combines revealed and rational sciences; (2) the modernization of pedagogical methods, emphasizing gradual learning (tadrij), logical reasoning (qiyas and 'aql), and lifelong education; and (3) the empowerment of the Malay language (Jawi) as a legitimate medium for advanced Islamic scholarship, thereby democratizing access to knowledge. Al-Fatani's intellectual legacy demonstrates that Islamic educational reform in the Malay Archipelago did not emerge in the 20th century alone but was pioneered as early as the late 19th century through the scholarly networks of the Haramain (the two holy cities of Mecca and Medina). His integrated epistemology offers a relevant model for contemporary Islamic education, particularly in addressing the persistent dichotomy between religious and general education in Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the determination of job satisfaction on employee work discipline within the context of Human Resource Management (HRM) through a literature review approach. The background of this study is based on the importance of job satisfaction as a psychological factor influencing employee work behavior, particularly in shaping sustainable work discipline, while previous studies have tended to be partial and predominantly quantitative in approach. The research method employs a descriptive qualitative design using a literature review approach, involving the identification, selection, and synthesis of relevant scientific sources from both accredited national journals and reputable international publications. The findings indicate that job satisfaction plays a significant role as a determinant of employee work discipline, reflected in dimensions such as satisfaction with the job itself, compensation, interpersonal relationships, and supervision, and further strengthened by contextual factors such as organizational culture, leadership, and reward systems. The discussion emphasizes that the relationship between job satisfaction and work discipline is multidimensional and dynamic, where job satisfaction not only serves as an outcome of organizational policies but also functions as a key antecedent in shaping disciplined behavior. This study concludes that enhancing job satisfaction is a crucial strategy for strengthening employee work discipline in a sustainable manner. The implications of this study suggest the need for organizations to develop human resource management policies oriented toward improving job satisfaction as a strategic effort to enhance work discipline, as well as encouraging future research to empirically test this conceptual model across various organizational contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the management of an integrative curriculum at Pondok Pesantren Darul Falah Bandar Lampung, which combines the Salafiyyah Curriculum, KMI Gontor Curriculum, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs Curriculum into a unified educational system. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design, where data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, and then analyzed interactively through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that at the planning stage, curriculum integration remains partial and is not yet supported by a comprehensive conceptual design. At the implementation stage, the curriculum has been applied simultaneously within a boarding school system; however, it results in a high learning burden and suboptimal synchronization of learning materials. Meanwhile, at the evaluation stage, assessment systems are still conducted separately, thus failing to measure learning outcomes holistically. These findings highlight that the success of an integrative curriculum is strongly determined by the systemic coherence of curriculum management functions, including planning, implementation, and evaluation. The implications of this study suggest the need to develop a structured integrative curriculum management model through strengthening coordination among stakeholders, organizing a proportional learning load, and developing an integrated evaluation system to enhance the quality of Islamic boarding school education sustainably.

Abstract

Environmental education has become an essential agenda in school management because ecological awareness must be translated into students’ values, habits, and responsible behavior. This study aims to synthesize previous research on the integration of environmental education into school management to strengthen students’ environmental care character. This study employed an integrative literature review by analyzing relevant studies published between 2018 and 2025 on school management, environmental education, green schools, Adiwiyata programs, school culture, environmental literacy, and pro-environmental behavior. The reviewed literature was analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns related to institutional policy, curriculum integration, school culture, stakeholder participation, environmental facilities, and program evaluation. The findings indicate that environmental education is more effective when it is embedded in school management through strategic planning, curriculum implementation, daily habituation, teacher and principal role modelling, student participation, supportive infrastructure, and continuous evaluation. The synthesis also shows that students’ environmental care character is not formed merely through classroom instruction, but through a consistent school ecosystem that integrates cognitive, affective, behavioral, cultural, and managerial dimensions. This study contributes a conceptual framework of environmental education-based school management, in which institutional, pedagogical, cultural, participatory, ecological-practical, and evaluative components work together to shape students’ environmental responsibility. The implication of this study is that schools should position environmental education as an integral part of institutional governance rather than as an additional, ceremonial, or award-oriented program.
