Abstract

Arm muscles greatly determine an athlete's strokes, such as the forehand clear, considering how essential training for arm muscle strength is in a sport, including badminton. Therefore, arm strength training needs to be analyzed in terms of its meaning and purpose as well as the types of training with elements related to supporting further development to achieve performance. Body flexibility is also essential in badminton, as it is the ability to perform movements with a wide range of motion. This study aims to prove the effect of variations in arm muscle training and flexibility on the forehand clear ability of members of the SMPN 1 Adonara Barat badminton extracurricular club. This study is experimental. The design used in accordance with this type of research is a one-group pretest and posttest design. This study involved 14 samples, selected through purposive sampling. The data collection instrument used was a performance test, namely a forehand clear shot test in badminton. Based on the findings and analysis of the research data, it can be concluded that arm muscle strength and flexibility training significantly affect the forehand clear shot performance of members in the SMPN 1 Adonara Barat badminton extracurricular club, as indicated by a t-value (5.303) greater than the critical t-value (2.160) at a 5% significance level, leading to the acceptance of Ha.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of a gamification approach on the improvement of basic forehand groundstroke skills in students with high and low levels of manipulative ability. The research method used a quantitative approach with a two-way mixed experimental design (2WMD), involving one between-subject factor, namely manipulative ability (high and low), and one within-subject factor, namely measurement time (pre-test and posttest). The study sample was students of the Physical Education, Health, and Recreation Study Program at the State University of Malang who had taken tennis courses. Data were collected through a basic forehand skills test and an observation rubric based on the TGMD-3. The analysis results showed a significant increase in forehand skill scores between the pre-test and posttest (F(1,58) = 911.969; p < 0.05; η² = 0.940). There was also a significant difference between the high- and low-manipulative-ability groups (F(1,58) = 151.932; p < 0.05; η² = 0.724). In addition, a significant interaction was found between measurement time and manipulative ability (F(1,58) = 26.940; p < 0.05; η² = 0.317). These findings confirm that the gamification approach is effective in increasing students’ motivation and motor skills through structured practice, direct feedback, and active involvement in sports learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of embodied cognition within the Neuro-Sports Learning (NSL) model as a cognitive intervention strategy in elementary school physical education. The research employed a quasi-experimental, pretest–posttest control-group design, involving two groups: an experimental group receiving instruction through the NSL model based on embodied cognition and a control group engaged in conventional physical education instruction. The participants consisted of 65 elementary school students in Blitar Regency, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Digit Span Test, D2 Test of Attention, and Cognitive Flexibility Test, and analyzed through t-tests and Repeated Measures ANOVA using SPSS. The findings revealed that the NSL model had a significant effect on enhancing students’ cognitive capacity (p < 0.001) with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.05–1.41). The most significant improvement was observed in working memory and attention, both rated “excellent.” These results demonstrate that integrating embodied cognition principles into the NSL model effectively optimizes brain function by combining structured physical activities with cognitive challenges. The study contributes to the growing body of research on neuroscience-based physical education and provides practical insights into designing cognitively engaging movement-based learning experiences for young learners.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of plyometric and weight training on explosive power and muscle mass, and to determine which method was more effective at increasing both. Taekwondo is a sport that requires considerable explosive power and muscle mass, so training is needed to improve these components. Explosive power enables athletes to attack quickly and forcefully, while muscle mass provides ideal proportions. The research method used was a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test two-group design with treatment consisting of plyometric and weight training. The research instruments were the standing board jump and body analysis. The research sample consisted of 15 taekwondo athletes from Semarang. The results showed that plyometric and weight training exercises increased explosive power and muscle mass. Still, plyometric training was more effective at increasing explosive power, and weight training was more effective at increasing muscle mass. The paired sample t-test results show that all variables have a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which is less than 0.05. This indicates a significant difference between the pre-test and posttest values across all groups. This study is expected to serve as a reference for the development of training programs to increase explosive power and muscle mass.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of the coach-athlete relationship and self-esteem on achievement motivation. The research method used is quantitative, with data collected from 208 young athletes. The analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM-PLS). The results indicate that the coach-athlete relationship falls within the moderate to high range, reflecting positive interaction and practical involvement. The self-esteem of young athletes is also rated as moderate to high, suggesting a positive self-perception and sense of ability. Achievement motivation is clearly evident, showing a strong drive to succeed; however, one dimension, creativity, requires improvement. Structural analysis revealed significant positive relationships between the coach-athlete relationship and self-esteem (β = 0.399) and achievement motivation (β = 0.298). Both relationships were found to be substantial, both directly and indirectly through self-esteem, with a total effect of 0.512. Furthermore, self-esteem directly influences achievement motivation (β = 0.537). These findings confirm that positive interpersonal relationships and high self-esteem are key factors in motivating young athletes to achieve.

Abstract

Individual factors and school environments shape the physical fitness of elementary school students, yet comparative evidence across urban–rural contexts by gender and facility support remains limited. This study examined (1) gender-specific differences in EUROFIT performance between urban and rural schools and (2) the association between school facility support and assets (SEFEI) with students’ fitness. A cross-sectional design involved grade 4–6 students (n = 135; ages 9–12) from one urban and one rural school. Fitness was assessed using the complete EUROFIT battery, while the SEFEI index (0–7) captured availability of space, equipment, personnel, and scheduled activities. Analyses used descriptive statistics, group comparisons, and ANCOVA controlling for age and BMI. Results showed boys scored higher than girls on total EUROFIT and strength–speed components, particularly in the bent-arm hang and 10 × 5 m shuttle run. Urban–rural differences were not significant. Urban schools had higher SEFEI scores (+68%) and slightly better fitness outcomes. BMI was a significant covariate, and no sex-by-location interaction emerged. Overall, gender differences were more influential than location, and positive trends between SEFEI and EUROFIT highlight the need to improve facility access and structured physical activity programs in low-resource schools.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship and contribution of anaerobic capacity to 100-meter sprint speed in track and field athletes in Karawang Regency. The study used a quantitative design with a correlational approach. The subjects consisted of 10 sprint athletes selected using a purposive sampling technique. Anaerobic capacity was measured using the Running-based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST) which produces indicators of peak power, mean power, and fatigue index, while sprint performance was measured through a 100-meter run test. Data analysis used the Pearson correlation test and simple linear regression. The results showed that peak power had a strong and significant negative relationship with sprint time (r = -0.71; p = 0.02), while mean power showed a moderate negative relationship (r = -0.65; p = 0.03). Fatigue index had a moderate positive relationship (r = 0.59; p = 0.04). Regression analysis showed that anaerobic capacity was able to explain approximately 50% of the variation in sprint performance (R² = 0.50). A sample size analysis using the G*Power approach demonstrated that the study's sample size met the minimum threshold for a correlation test with adequate test power. In conclusion, anaerobic capacity significantly contributes to 100-meter sprint performance. The practical implication of this study is the importance of training programs that focus on increasing explosive power and anaerobic capacity to enhance athlete performance.

Abstract

Body image has become a salient psychological factor influencing adolescents’ experiences in physical education (PE), particularly in environments where physical appearance and performance are socially visible. Although PE is intended to promote positive engagement and enjoyment, concerns about body image may shape students’ affective responses during participation. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between body image satisfaction and enjoyment in physical education among students. This study employed a quantitative correlational design using a nonparametric approach. A total of 364 students from several schools participated in the study. Data were collected using the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) to measure enjoyment and a 5-point Likert-scale questionnaire to assess body image satisfaction. Normality tests indicated non-normal data distribution (p < 0.05); therefore, Spearman’s rho correlation analysis was used. The results revealed a statistically significant negative relationship between body image satisfaction and enjoyment in physical education (ρ = -0.27, p < 0.05). Although significant, the correlation was weak, indicating that body image satisfaction is not the primary determinant of students’ enjoyment. This finding suggests that students’ emotional experiences in PE are influenced by more complex psychological and social processes, including social comparison and perceived evaluation within the learning environment. In conclusion, enjoyment in physical education is not solely shaped by body image satisfaction but also by pedagogical and social factors. These findings highlight the importance of creating inclusive, supportive, and non-evaluative learning environments to enhance students’ comfort and enjoyment during physical activity.

Abstract

Psychological preparedness constitutes a decisive yet underexplored determinant of competitive excellence in traditional martial arts, particularly within culturally embedded disciplines such as Pencak Silat. Despite growing recognition of mental toughness in sport psychology, empirically grounded, culturally specific frameworks for champion mentality cultivation remain conspicuously absent in existing literature. This study aimed to investigate the strategies, stakeholder roles, and contextual determinants underlying champion mentality formation among Pencak Silat athletes in Boyolali Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Employing a phenomenological qualitative design with reflexive thematic analysis, data were collected from 26 purposively selected participants, eight certified coaches, and eighteen competitive athletes through semi-structured interviews, structured field observations across twelve training sessions, and documentary analysis. Four principal themes emerged: character-based developmental strategies, multistakeholder roles in mental conditioning, intrinsic-extrinsic determinants of resilience, and adaptive obstacle-management solutions. Uniquely, findings revealed that indigenous philosophical values, budi pekerti (refined character), keselarasan (harmonious balance), and pengendalian diri (self-mastery) do not contradict Western sport psychology frameworks but organically reinforce Self-Determination Theory and Achievement Goal Theory principles. This cultural-psychological convergence constitutes the primary scholarly contribution of this investigation, demonstrating that sustainable mental toughness in Southeast Asian martial arts emerges through habituated character formation rather than episodic motivational intervention. Coaches are recommended to systematically integrate mindfulness-based regulation, cognitive reappraisal strategies, and culturally contextualised reflective dialogue into formal curricula, advancing more globally inclusive models of sport psychology.
