Abstract

This study was conducted to analyse the validity of the self determination instrument. The study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design with a convenience sample technique of 102 people, consisting of 45 men and 57 women, in junior high schools in West Java, Indonesia. The self-determination instrument was elaborated from Ryan and Deci's Theory, with 17 items and 6 levels of answer choices. Data were analysed using the Rasch Model with the help of Winstep software version 3.73. Analysis of self-determination instrument results through the Rasch model based on aspects of unidimensionality, item analysis (item difficulty level and item suitability level), diagnostic rating scale and instrument analysis. The results of the reliability value of 0.91 so that it can be used as a consideration of measuring instruments to measure self-determination abilities in junior high school students, and the Guidance and Counselling process can be implemented in the need assessment step.

Abstract

In the current era, education remains an integral part of life, crucial for enhancing human resources. Schools are traditionally seen as central to developing children's competencies.  However, this study seeks to examine the role of family as a provider of comprehensive and holistic education, specifically in the context of orphanages. The study aimed to explore the impact of family education on the moral and character development of orphans. A mixed-method design,  particularly a sequential explanatory design, was employed in this research. The study involved 34 respondents, including children from orphanages and orphanage caregivers, selected through purposive sampling.  Data collection included a literature review of relevant journals and parental bonding questionnaires.  The analysis utilized a mixed method approach, with qualitative analysis conducted first, followed by quantitative analysis. The results indicated that family education, especially parental bonding, significantly influences the improvement of children's moral and character development.  The study implies that family education extends beyond assisting children at home and enrolling them in higher education; it also encompasses advising, building trust, and serving as positive role models.

Abstract

The ability of parents to accept the condition of their children with special needs  has a positive impact on the process of handling children.  This study aims to explore the experiences of parents who have children with special needs and developmental disorders using Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' theoretical perspective regarding the stages of grief and forms of acceptance.  This qualitative phenomenological research focuses on parents' self-acceptance as a phenomenon.  The research subjects were selected using a purposive sampling technique, and three parents of children with special needs and developmental disorders aged 5-7 years were identified.  Research data was collected using direct interviews, in-depth observations, and online communication media.  The data were processed and reduced manually by the researchers before being presented.  The results showed that all subjects went through the stages of acceptance according to the stages of grief theory, but the stages experienced by the subjects varied slightly.  The rejection stage was experienced only by Subject 1 and Subject 2; the anger stage by Subject 2 and Subject 3; the bargaining stage by Subject 1, Subject 2, and Subject 3; the depression stage by Subject 1 and Subject 3; and the acceptance stage by all three subjects.  The process of parental acceptance of children with special needs has a direct impact on the parenting model and the fulfillment of children's rights in everyday life.  Therefore, good acceptance skills are crucial for parents of children with special needs, enabling them to feel comfortable and guide their children towards achieving self-actualization.
