Abstract

This study explores the implementation of ethnoscience-based electronic student worksheets to enhance elementary students' understanding of ecosystem concepts and curiosity. By integrating local cultural wisdom with digital learning tools, the study offers a contextual and engaging approach to science education. Using an experimental pretest-posttest control group design, 60 fifth-grade students were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group utilized ethnoscience-based electronic worksheets, while the control group followed conventional learning methods. Data collection involved ecosystem concept tests and curiosity questionnaires, analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. Results revealed that the experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in understanding ecosystem concepts (mean increase of 22.9 points) and curiosity (mean increase of 1.2 points), compared to the control group, which recorded increases of 11.9 points and 0.6 points. These findings underscore the effectiveness of integrating local wisdom into teaching materials to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-life applications. The worksheets encourage students to observe, question, and explore, fostering both cognitive and affective learning outcomes. This approach not only strengthens conceptual understanding but also promotes cultural appreciation and pride among students. The study's novelty lies in its combination of ethnoscience with digital technology, offering an innovative and interactive educational resource that aligns with modern educational demands while preserving cultural heritage. It concludes that ethnoscience-based electronic worksheets are a valuable tool for holistic learning.

Abstract

Subak, a traditional Balinese irrigation system, is an agricultural management method and a cultural heritage embodying the Tri Hita Karana philosophy, which emphasizes harmony between humans, nature, and the divine. However, modern challenges such as land-use changes, urbanization, and declining agricultural engagement among younger generations threaten its sustainability. This study aims to develop a 3D animated film as an educational tool to enhance public understanding of pawongan, the social aspect of subak, through digital media. The research follows the Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC) method for animation production and a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test evaluations to measure its effectiveness. Data analysis includes paired sample t-tests to assess comprehension improvements and qualitative analysis from interviews and observations. Results show that the experimental group, which watched the animation, demonstrated a significantly higher understanding of pawongan than the control group, which received conventional education methods. Furthermore, audience engagement and discussions post-viewing suggest that digital media fosters a stronger emotional connection and motivation for cultural preservation. This study highlights the novel use of 3D animation as an effective medium for cultural education, bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and digital learning. Future research should explore interactive applications, such as augmented reality (AR) or gamification, to enhance public engagement and long-term impact on subak preservation.

Abstract

This study explores students’ understanding of settings in folklore, focusing on Ande-Ande Lumut by Tira Ikranegara in the context of literature learning. By using naturalistic qualitative methods, this study allows for direct observation without manipulation. Data collection involved participant observation, in-depth interviews with students and teachers, and analysis of students’ reflections. The study's findings revealed that textual elements, personal experiences, social interactions, and teaching strategies influenced students’ understanding of setting. Unlike previous text-based studies, this study highlights the natural process that students experience in constructing meaning about setting in a classroom setting. The results showed that students understood setting better when they related it to real-life experiences, while group discussions significantly improved their understanding. Teachers played a significant role in guiding students through reflective questions and experiential learning. This study provides new insights into literature education by emphasizing the importance of interactive and experiential learning approaches. The findings have implications for developing literature teaching methods that encourage deeper engagement and contextual understanding rather than memorizing intrinsic elements.
