Abstract

This qualitative study aims to identify the forms of directive sentences (Aufforderungssätze) in German-language cooking recipes on the website Chefkoch.de. Using a descriptive analysis method based on the theories of Helbig and Buscha (2001) and Engel (1993), data were collected from 12 selected recipes with the highest ratings (4.5–4.9/5), representing four dish categories. Analysis of 214 Aufforderungssätze showed that Infinitivkonstruktionen (142 sentences) were the most dominant form, followed by Aussagesätze im Präsens oder Futur (42 sentences), Imperativsätze (21 sentences), Einwortsätze (4 sentences), and Fragesätze (1 sentence). The findings also revealed the use of two forms not covered by the theoretical classification, namely Aussagesätze im Perfekt (2 sentences) and Aussagesätze im Passiv (2 sentence), while the forms of isolated subordinate clauses and the present subjunctive with the pronoun “man” were not found in the analyzed data.

Abstract

Understanding literary meaning is a key competency for German literature students, especially in poetry analysis. One of the challenges that often arises is the difficulty in interpreting symbolic meanings and indirect expressions in poetic texts. As a solution to this problem, this study analyzes Theodor Woldsen Storm's poem Die Stadt using Riffaterre's semiotic approach to reveal deeper meanings. A heuristic reading reveals a small town by the sea that was the backdrop of Storm's youth. A hermeneutic reading shows that the town symbolizes Storm's longing for Husum. Indirect expressions in this poem include metaphors, personification, synecdoche, ambiguity, contradictions, mixed rhyme patterns, and enjambment. The matrix of this poem is Heimatsehnsucht, with the model “Doch hängt mein ganzes Herz an dir”, while its potential hypogram is Heimatsehnsucht and its actual hypogram is Oktoberlied.

Abstract

This study analyzes how the elements of poetic realism in Theodor Storm's novella Immensee (1849) function as instruments of social critique representing class inequality and gender relations in nineteenth-century German society. Using a qualitative method, close reading, Miles and Huberman's (1994) interactive analysis model, and a sociology of literature approach, the study examines how literary elements reflect social structures. The findings show that realism, poetic language, and emotional depth function not merely as aesthetic features but as complementary forms of social critique. Realism portrays marriage as an economic transaction that deprives women of autonomy; poetic language, through the water lily metaphor, indirectly criticizes class norms; and restrained emotional depth reflects emotional repression in bourgeois society. These findings demonstrate that Immensee is more than a melancholic love story; it presents Storm's subtle critique of the class and gender structures that undermine the possibility of authentic relationships across class boundaries.

Abstract

Song lyrics are a way for songwriters to share their feelings, experiences, and messages. To do this indirectly, they often use figurative language to make the emotions deeper. This study aims to identify the types of figurative language used in Adel Tawil’s songs and explain what they mean. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method, focusing on three songs: Ist da jemand, Mein Leben ohne mich, and So schön anders. The data were collected by listening to the songs and taking notes, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results show four types of figurative language: metaphor, symbol, personification, and comparison. Metaphor is the most used (21 data), followed by symbols and comparisons (3 data each), and personification (1 data). This shows that Adel Tawil likes to use metaphors to turn abstract feelings into concrete words so they are easier for listeners to understand. This study is expected to help in literary analysis and German language learning.
