Abstract

There were some miscommunications occurred between speakers and listeners because the listener did not understand the core intent of the speaker, especially what was conveyed implies pragmatic meaning. Thus, "pragmatic" material is urgently needed to be incorporated to the curriculum of basic English as well as English conversation, to enrich student's vocabulary in understanding the culture and meanings of native English speakers. Thus, this study is aimed to develop the pragmatic based English material that is appropriate to the students’ needs of Hotel Management study program. This research was conducted based on Research and Development techniques (R & D). The data were collected through questionnaire analysis and interview. Meanwhile, the development of the material followed these steps, as used by Hutchinson in Ichsanda (2013: 36): 1), collected information on target needs by distributing questionnaires to students of STIM Sukma, 2) analyzed students' learning needs, 3), read and analyzed pre-existing materials; 4) developed materials according to student needs; 5), revision; 6); prepared the drafts; 7), and had a triangulation with experts; 8); final drafts; 9), product application. Based on the analysis, material that is appropriate with hotel management study program has been created and developed. Keywords: Developing materials, hotel Management

Abstract

Understanding someone’s utterances who has different cultural background with the listener certainly should be intended. Lot of miscommunications occurred between speakers and listeners, in case that the listener does not get the core intent meaning of the speaker. Specifically, what has been conveyed implies indirect meaning. Thus, Understanding pragmatic is very important. Rahman (2017) has created a book with pragmatic approachment. Rahman (2017) carries various daily hotel conversations that convey pragmatic meaning. Then, the book has been taught to the students as well. Thus, this study is aimed to investigate the students’ perspective on that book implementation. A Survey was used to collect the data by using questionnaire and interview. 40 students of hotel management were involved in this study. The research reveals that 33 respondents (82.5%) strongly agree that the book is contextual with their daily work and practice. It is also revealed the fact that 34 respondents (85%) said the book represents their hard skill levels. Yet, the book also motivates students to learn by seeing the data that 31 (78.5%) students informed that they are curious to learn the book by practice.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely used in the field of translation in recent years. However, the use of AI in translation has been limited due to its limitations in handling cultural nuances, implicit meanings, and complex language structures. This study aims to analyse the meta-language awareness of English Language Education students in conducting critical analysis of translation since the emergence of AI. In addition, this study explores how students assess the accuracy and bias in AI translation results and the extent to which they are able to correct or improve the translation independently. This case study focuses on students' perspectives and viewpoints in understanding, evaluating, and critiquing the translation results produced by AI and how their critical analysis skills develop in the context of translation. The findings highlight that AI can serve as a valuable tool, but it should not be solely relied upon for tasks requiring deep linguistic understanding, particularly in academic, professional, and cross-cultural communication settings.
