Abstract

Perintis lake is a significant aquatic area with considerable potential as a habitat for various bird species, as it is surrounded by forest and agricultural areas that support a diverse avifauna. This research aimed to determine the diversity and conservation status of waterbird species in the perintis lake area. The research employed survery method by determining observations stations and  following the water flow river transect along the lake using a boat while recording all birds seen or heard. The results identified several waterbird species, including the Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris), Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), Cerulean Kingfisher (Alcedo coerulescens), White-browed Crake (Porzana cinerea), Javan Pond Heron (Butorides striata javanica), Barred Rail (Gallirallus torquatus) and Javan Pond Heron (Ardeola speciosa). The conclusions are as follows : (1) The waterbird diversity index (H’) at perintis lake ranged from 1.365 to 1.912, which falls into the moderate category, indicating that the waterbird community in thus lake is fairly diverse; (2) The evennes index (E) ranged from 0.378 to 0.526, indicating that the distribution of individuals among species is relatively stable

Abstract

Abstract. Zakaria Z, Abinawanto, Angio MH, Supriatna J. 2022. Habitat preferences and site fidelity of Tarsius supriatnai in agricultural area and secondary forest of Popayato-Paguat Landscape (Gorontalo, Indonesia). Biodiversitas 23: 3844-3851. Tarsius supriatnai is a new species experiencing a declining population trend due to deforestation. This study aims to determine the microhabitat preferences and site fidelity of T. supriatnai in the agricultural areas and secondary forests of the Popayato-Paguat landscape, Gorontalo, Indonesia. Measuring important value index (IVI) conducted by vegetation analysis of the nest tree location found in the two habitats was carried out using a quadrat method in seedling, sapling, pole, and tree forms. In addition, temperature and light intensity around the nest tree was also measured. The results showed that in the habitat of agricultural areas, the plant with the highest IVI was not the nest tree. Meanwhile, in the secondary forest habitat, the plant with the highest IVI at the tree form (Ficus virens) was the nest tree used by T. supriatnai. The diversity value of the H’ and E index showed that the two habitats were in the high to moderate. There was no significant difference in temperature and light intensity between the two habitat types. The results also showed that T. supriatnai mostly used the nest tree of Bambusa vulgaris (26.32%) in the agriculture area and Schizostachyum lima and Calamus zollingeri (28.57%) in the secondary forest. A survey was conducted to evaluate site fidelity to several nest trees found in 2018. The result revealed that T. supriatnai still uses 42.9% of nest trees.

Abstract

Teo tuber flour (Tacca leontopetaloides) is a local carbohydrate source with potential to be developed as a functional food. However, information about its starch composition and glycemic load is still limited, even though these two parameters are important in determining blood glucose response after consumption as well as the carbohydrate quality of a food. This study aims to determine the amylose and amylopectin content of teo tuber flour and evaluate its glycemic load using male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The study used a descriptive method with a quantitative approach and a laboratory experimental design. Analysis of amylose and amylopectin content was done using spectrophotometry with the DNS method and an amylose standard curve. Glycemic load was determined by measuring the rats’ blood glucose response after giving them teo tuber flour porridge and pure glucose, then calculated using the Incremental Area Under the Curve (iAUC) method. Research results show that teo yam flour contains 15.727% amylose and 64.389% amylopectin, meaning its starch composition is dominated by amylopectin. Rats fed with teo yam flour porridge showed lower and more stable blood glucose responses compared to rats given pure glucose. The glycemic load value of teo yam flour is 17, which falls into the medium category. These findings suggest that teo yam flour has the potential to be developed as a functional food that can help maintain stable blood glucose levels. Further research is needed to explore starch modification techniques that can reduce glycemic response and enhance its health benefits.

Abstract

Abstract: The buffer zone of the Nantu-Boliyohuto Wildlife Sanctuary in Boalemo, Gorontalo, is a tropical rainforest harboring rich avifauna biodiversity for conservation-based ecotourism. This study identified bird species with ecotourism potential and determined their diversity level. Conducted in November 2025 in Saritani Village, the research employed a quantitative descriptive method with an exploratory approach across three zones: forest edge, riparian, and agroforestry. Results revealed 20 bird species from 17 families, totaling 198 individuals. The overall diversity index was moderate (  = 2.0746) with Dicaeum celebicum (Grey-sided Flowerpecker) being the most frequently encountered. Out of these, 10 species possess significant ecotourism potential based on striking plumage, distinctive birdsong, endemism, conservation status, and unique behavior. Key species include the Knobbed Hornbill (Rhyticeros cassidix), a Vulnerable endemic species, the Small Blue Kingfisher (Alcedo coerulescens), the Collared Kingfisher (Todirhamphus chloris), the Black Kite (Milvus migrans), and the Javan/Pied Myna (Gracupica contra). These findings indicate that the Nantu-Boliyohuto buffer zone holds substantial potential for development as a sustainable birdwatching (avitourism) destination. This wealth of biodiversity can serve as a primary attraction while simultaneously supporting regional conservation efforts and local community awareness. Keywords: Avifauna, Birdwatching, Ecotourism, Buffer Zone, Nantu-Boliyohuto Wildlife Sanctuary.   Abstrak: Kawasan penyangga Suaka Margastwa Nantu-Boliyohuto merupakan kawasan transisi hutan hujan tropis di Kabupaten Boalemo, Gorontalo, yang menyimpan potensi keanekaragaman hayati, khusunya avifauna, sebagai daya tarik ekowisata berbasis konservasi. Abstract
