Abstract

The Riau Islands are known as an island group in Indonesia that is famous for its wealth of marine plants. Among the prominent marine flora, sea grape (Caulerpa racemosa) is a marine plant that produces secondary metabolites including alkaloids, saponins, phenolics, and flavonoids which have been proven to have antibacterial properties. Previous research showed that 70% ethanol extract from sea grapes exhibited strong antibacterial activity. However, there is no detailed information regarding the ability of the n-hexane and ethyl acetate fractions of sea grapes as antibacterials. This study aims to examine the antibacterial effects of n-hexane and ethyl acetate fractions from sea grapes against Streptococcus mutans and Shigella dysenteriae. The sea grape extraction process is carried out through the maceration method using 95% ethanol solvent, followed by the fractionation stage using the liquid-liquid extraction method. This fractionation process involves the use of non-polar (n-hexane) and semi-polar (ethyl acetate) solvents. The test method used was disk paper diffusion with varying fraction concentrations: 500 μg/disc, 400 μg/disk, 300 μg/disc, and 200 μg/disk. The positive control for this study used 30 μg/disc of tetracycline, because tetracycline is known as a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Meanwhile, the negative control used 10% DMSO. Findings from the research stated that the n-hexane fraction could not stop the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria, while the ethyl acetate fraction was able to inhibit the development of these bacteria. The average diameter at a concentration of 500 μg/disk was 9.2 mm, 400 μg/disk is 8 mm, 300 μg/disc is 7.7 mm, and 200 μg/disc is 6.5 mm. However, neither the ethyl acetate nor n-hexane fractions showed an inhibition zone against Shigella dysenteriae bacteria

Abstract

One of Indonesia's best fruit plants, the pineapple (Ananas comosus), has a high antioxidant content. Ananas comosus, or pineapple leaves, are a component of the pineapple plant. They have slightly thick leaf sheaths with tiny brown thorns pointing upward at their margins. (Ananasa comosus). The purpose of this study is to investigate the pineapple (Ananas comosus) leaf's potential as a natural antioxidant source. The DPPH technique is being utilized in a descriptive quantitative research study to investigate the antioxidant capacity of pineapple leaves. Ananas comosus, or dried and crushed pineapple leaves, were macerated in methanol solvent until the sample was completely submerged. The IC50 value ascertained by the linear regression equation is the parameter employed in this technique. After the extract has evaporated from the solvent, its absorbance is measured at 520 nm using a microplate reader and the DPPH technique. Pineapple leaves show moderate antioxidant activity against DPPH with an IC50 value of 113.069 ppm, according to data from calculations and study. According to this study, the antioxidant capacity of pineapple leaves (Ananas comosus) is moderate.

Abstract

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is one of the significant global health challenges, prompting the search for new antimicrobial compounds from natural sources. One promising plant is cherry leaves (Muntingia calabura L.), which are known to contain flavonoids and other bioactive compounds with antibacterial potential. This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of cherry leaf extract obtained through Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) using Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) as extraction solvents. Two types of NADES were used: a mixture of choline chloride: citric acid (1:2) and choline chloride: glycerol (1:2), which offer advantages such as low toxicity, high stability, non-volatility, and environmental friendliness compared to conventional organic solvents. Antimicrobial activity was assessed using the disc diffusion method against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The results showed that the extract using choline chloride: citric acid as solvent produced inhibition zones of 22.5 mm against E. coli and 16.05 mm against S. aureus. In contrast, the extract using choline chloride glycerol exhibited low activity against E. coli (3.41 mm) and was inactive against S. aureus. These findings indicate that combining UAE and citric acid-based NADES is an effective and sustainable approach for extracting bioactive compounds to develop natural antibacterial agents.

Abstract

Cosmetics are ingredients or mixtures of ingredients to be used on parts of the human body with the intention of cleansing, protecting to keep it in good condition and can play a role in healing and skin care. Facial cosmetic products that are currently often used are powder. There are various forms of powder, one of which is whitening powder which is widely discussed not only the product that floods the market, but also because of the impact of using the product which is able to whiten and brighten the face in a very short time. The content contained in these products also varies, some are formulated safe to use and dangerous when used. One of them is that mercury (Hg) is usually added intentionally or not very unjustified because it will be in direct contact with the skin and can be toxic. This study aims to identify the content of Mercury (Hg) in whitening surgery circulating in Batam City using the FIMS (Flow Injection Mercury System) test method. The results of research conducted on 10 whitening powder samples obtained mercury (Hg) levels with the largest average value, namely in the Px sample code with a value of 0.924 mg/kg, while the smallest average value was in the Lv sample code with a value of 0.021 mg/kg. In the test, there is a mercury content, but no one exceeds the maximum limit for cosmetics set by BPOM, which in BPOM regulations regarding metal contamination requirements in cosmetics containing mercury (Hg) is no more than 1 mg/kg, so it is safe to use. Keywords:  Cosmetics, whitening powder, mercury, FIMS (Flow Injection Mercury     System), Hg

Abstract

Inflammation is a complex response that occurs in blood vessel tissue due to external or internal stimuli. One plant that is known to have anti-inflammatory properties is agarwood leaves (Aquilaria malaccensis Lam). This study aims to evaluate the effect of ethanol extract from gaharu leaves on anti-inflammatory activity in male white mice (Mus musculus) and to determine the most effective dose. The experimental animals were divided into five groups, including a control group that received Na CMC and diclofenac sodium. Inflammation induction was carried out through injection of egg white solution, and measurements were carried out periodically for six hours. The analysis results showed that a dose of 300 mg/KgBW of agarwood leaf extract provided the most significant anti-inflammatory effect compared to lower doses. 100 mg/kgBB and 200 mg/kgBB
