Abstract

Morphology plays a crucial role in students' language acquisition. This study delves into the distinctions between inflectional and derivational morphemes, aiming to enhance comprehension of these concepts. By investigating word creation processes and observed alterations, the study illustrates the profound impact of prefixes and suffixes on words, shedding light on their significance in language learning. Students frequently require clarification when distinguishing between inflectional and derivational morphemes during learning. To enhance comprehension of this subject, this present study initially investigated the definitions and subcategories of these two terms outlined in various literary sources. Next, it provided a concise overview of the critical distinctions between inflectional and derivational morphemes. These analyses aim to determine the word created by derivational morphemes, the word formed by inflectional morphemes, the process by which the specified word is formed, and the types of observed alterations. The author implements the descriptive qualitative approach. It will discover that each morpheme possesses its function and influences the base word's meaning, word class, or grammatical function. This study illustrates the impact of prefixes and suffixes on words.

Abstract

Validasi dilakukan melalui triangulasi teori.

Abstract

Speaking remains one of the most challenging skills for Indonesian students to master, largely due to limited opportunities for oral practice in traditional, teacher-centered classrooms. To address this issue, this study investigates the use of the Flipped Classroom model in improving students’ English-speaking competence at MA Darul Ulum Waru, Sidoarjo. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research was conducted over one month (April–May 2025) and involved one English teacher and fifteen eleventh-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observations, structured interviews, and documentation to explore both instructional implementation and participants’ experiences. The findings reveal that the Flipped Classroom encouraged students to prepare independently before class, resulting in more interactive in-class speaking activities. Students demonstrated greater confidence, motivation, and fluency, while the teacher reported higher engagement and participation levels. Despite challenges related to digital access and self-regulation, the approach proved effective in promoting speaking competence. This study suggests that English teachers integrate digital pre-class learning into speaking instruction and that policymakers support technology-based pedagogical innovation to foster more communicative, student-centered classrooms in Indonesian schools.

Abstract

Motivation is commonly accepted as a significant determinant in second language achievement. Different types of English courses may influence learners’ motivation. This study investigates the types of motivation evident among Indonesian Police Academy cadets learning English either for General Purposes or for Specific Purposes, as perceived by both cadets and teachers. Using quantitative survey methods, the research includes 100 cadets, equally divided into two groups and two teachers. Results indicate that both groups exhibit predominantly intrinsic and instrumental motivation. Cadets learning English for General Purposes display stronger motivation than cadets studying English for Specific Purposes. Teacher perspectives generally mirror these findings, although some nuances in motivation type are observed. Implications highlight the need for English for Specific Purposes curricula to bolster student-centeredness and relevance, thereby maximizing cadet motivation.
