Abstract

The implementation of diagnostic assessments in the Independent Curriculum is a crucial step in mapping students' initial abilities and designing appropriate learning strategies. This study aims to identify obstacles to the implementation of diagnostic assessments in deep learning-based biology learning in public senior high schools in Bandar Lampung City, encompassing the planning, implementation, and follow-up stages. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a purposive sampling technique. The sample consisted of three public senior high schools, four biology teachers, and 69 tenth-grade students studying Biodiversity. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, questionnaires, and documentation. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the implementation of diagnostic assessments was not optimal. Only two schools had implemented cognitive and non-cognitive diagnostic assessments, while one school had not implemented them at all. The main obstacles lay in limited school facilities and the low level of socialization regarding the Independent Curriculum, particularly the implementation of diagnostic assessments in innovative, deep learning-oriented biology learning. However, limited understanding and institutional support remained a significant obstacle. This study recommends improving teacher training, providing supporting facilities, and implementing more systematic assessment follow-up policies

Abstract

One of the scientific approach activities is asking questions but not every student is actively asking questionswhich can trigger curiosity about learning. This study aims to measure the making questions ability of fifth-grade elementary school students in the city of Bandar Lampung on the subject matter of respiratory organsand functions in animals and humans. This descriptive survey research used a multistage cluster samplingarea combined with the stratification. The design of this research is cross-sectional. The type of data in thisstudy is quantitative data obtained by measuring the ability of students in making questions and the resultswill be interpreted in the form of a percentage which is then categorized based on the category of students'ability in making questions. The making questions ability of students in this study can be measured accordingto the indicators of assessing the quality of the questions. The results of the calculation of the data that havebeen obtained show that the ability of grade V elementary school students in making questions is in highcategory with a final percentage of 70.97%. The results of quality of student questions based on 4 indicatorsobtained the percentage from the highest to the lowest, which is 24.6% on the focus indicator, 17.1% onthe grammar indicator, 15.6% on the relevance indicator, and 13.6% on the cognitive level indicator. Thecognitive level is influenced by age and level of education, grammar is influenced by the limited vocabularyfactor that is owned. It can be concluded that the difficult to arrange questions with good and correctvocabulary relevance with influenced of students' inability to think more critically and deeply so it is difficultfor them to make questions that are relevant to everyday life or other fields of science and the focus isinfluenced by interesting learning media and interactive learning methods

Abstract

The development of critical thinking skills (CTS) is essential for students to succeed in biology learning. This study investigates the effectiveness of mindfulness-oriented learning models in fostering CTS among high school biology students. Employing a quasi-experimental design, two groups of students participated in biology lessons: the experimental group engaged in mindfulness-based activities integrated into the curriculum, while the control group received conventional instruction. Data was collected using standardized CTS assessments and student reflection journals. The findings indicate that students exposed to mindfulness-oriented learning models demonstrated significant improvements in CTS compared to those in the control group. The integration of mindfulness practices not only enhanced students analytical and evaluative abilities but also promoted greater engagement and self-awareness during biology learning. These results suggest that mindfulness-oriented models hold promise as innovative pedagogical approaches for advancing CTS in biology education. Implications for curriculum design and future research directions are discussed
