Abstract

The prevalence of stunting cases has begun to decline, but there is an increase in cases of underweight and wasting, if this is not handled properly it will add to new stunting cases. Comprehensive family empowerment is one approach that can be used to overcome this problem. The method used in this activity includes education regarding providing complementary foods with breast milk (MP-ASI). This activity will be held in July 2024 with 29 mothers participating who have underweight and wasting toddlers. Most mothers do not know whether their children's nutritional status is in the underweight or wasting category. Apart from that, most mothers complain that their children have difficulty eating, are picky about food and do not consume a variety of foods, including animal protein. After participating in the activity, mothers understand more about their child's nutritional status and know the appropriate and responsive practices for providing complementary feeding.

Abstract

Malnutrition is a pressing global health issue affecting vulnerable communities, including children and elderly populations. This research aimed to identify the risk factors associated with malnutrition in these groups and explore the potential of complementary therapy in mitigating health crises caused by malnutrition. A comprehensive survey was conducted, collecting data from diverse vulnerable communities. The survey design included structured questionnaires, open-ended questions, and focus group discussions to gather quantitative and qualitative data. The findings revealed that food insecurity, limited access to healthcare, low socio-economic status, insufficient dietary diversity, and inadequate micronutrient intake were significant risk factors contributing to malnutrition. Moreover, participants expressed positive perspectives on the potential efficacy of complementary therapy in nutrition support and emphasized the importance of community engagement and integration with existing healthcare systems. The study concludes that evidence-based strategies and targeted interventions are crucial to address malnutrition and improve the health outcomes of vulnerable populations. The research findings contribute to a better understanding of malnutrition and lay the groundwork for sustainable solutions to mitigate health crises related to malnutrition.

Abstract

Introduction: Pregnant women are a population vulnerable to health problems. The morbidity and mortality of pregnant women with COVID-19 are higher compared with the rest of the population. This study aims to determine the survival rate of pregnant versus non-pregnant women with COVID-19. Methods: The study used a retrospective observational cohort design. Data were collected from Dr Soeradji Tirtonegoro and Penembahan Senopati hospitals on patients treated between March 2020 and June 2022. A total of 923 women diagnosed with COVID-19 were included in the study. Sociodemographic and clinical data on patient characteristics were extracted from medical records. Data analysis was conducted using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses to estimate survival probability and investigate predictors of death, with a 5% significance level. Results: Among 932 women with COVID-19, 231 deaths occurred. The median survival time for all participants was 30.56 days, while for pregnant women, it was 11.21 days, and for pregnant women with comorbidities, it was 9.68 days. Years of treatment, age, comorbidities, number of comorbidities and pregnancy were associated with survival rate (P-value < 0.001). Consistent results were also obtained for pregnant women’s age and number of comorbidities (P-value < 0.05). Significant differences between pregnant and non-pregnant patients remained after adjustment for year, sex, age and hospital type (P-value < 0.001). Conclusion: Pregnant women with COVID-19 have a higher risk of death compared with non-pregnant women. Keywords: comorbidity; COVID-19, female; pregnant women; survival analysis
