Abstract

Anemia remains a public health problem in Indonesia, with a prevalence of 23.7%. The government has implemented a prevention program by providing Iron–Folic Acid (IFA) supplements to adolescent girls and women of reproductive age, with coverage in DKI Jakarta reaching 63.5%. This study aimed to analyze the relationships among anemia knowledge, anemia perception, and teacher support with adherence to IFA consumption among adolescent girls. A cross-sectional design was employed, involving 55 students aged 16–18 years from SMA Muhammadiyah 15 Jakarta who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires that assessed knowledge, perceptions, teacher support, and adherence to IFA. Adherence was measured using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Chi-square analysis showed that anemia perception was significantly associated with IFA adherence (p = 0.003; OR = 9.394), whereas anemia knowledge (p = 0.272) and teacher support (p = 1.000) were not. These findings indicate that anemia perception plays a key role in determining adherence to IFA, whereas knowledge and teacher support do not. Programs that enhance adolescents’ perception of anemia risk and consequences are needed to improve adherence. School-based education should be more engaging and relevant, and although teacher support was not significant, schools still play an important role in providing a supportive environment for implementing the IFA consumption program.

Abstract

Tele-exercise delivers remote physical activity programs via digital platforms, enhancing accessibility and adherence, making it a promising strategy to address obesity among workers. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of tele-exercise programs on body fat percentage, lipid profile, mental health measures and Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) gene expression measured via venipuncture & RT-PCR in obese office employees. A total of 33 overweight or obese employees (male/female, 18-45 years old, Body Mass Index (BMI) 23-30 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to the strength (SE) group, strength-cardio (SC) group, and control (CT) group. The strength exercise protocol included core training, circuit training, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Tabata training; cardio exercise includes low-high impact aerobic exercises. Each group was given nutrition education, whereas the two intervention groups participated in tele-exercise three times/week for twelve weeks. Tele-exercise was delivered via ZOOM application. Mental health indicators were measured using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-42) questionnaire. Compliance levels between intervention groups did not differ significantly (p>0.05). There was a significant reduction in bodyweight in the SC group (p=0.046). Blood High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) levels increased only in the SC group (0.50 mg/dL), but decreased in the SE group and CT group. SIRT1 gene expression increased in SE and CT groups (2.39- and 5.33-fold, respectively), whereas a significant decrease was observed in the SC group (p=0.043). Only the SE group showed a significant reduction in stress level (p=0.03), with a decrease of 30.9%. Strength exercise intervention improves total cholesterol level by -19.09 mg/dL.

Abstract

Background: Body composition, particularly the muscle-to-fat ratio, is an essential indicator of metabolic health and fitness. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between macronutrient intake (energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates) and physical exercise parameters (type, frequency, and duration) with the muscle mass and fat mass percentage in active males at a fitness center. Methods: A cross-sectional design involved 42 male participants (aged 20–40 years) selected through purposive sampling at Master Fitness Club. Macronutrient intake was assessed using a 2×24-hour food recall, exercise data were collected via questionnaires, and body composition was measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). Data were analyzed using Pearson and Spearman correlation tests, as well as the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Fat intake was significantly negatively associated with muscle mass (p=0.003; r=−0.443) and significantly positively related to fat mass (p=0.002; r=0.466). Energy, protein, carbohydrate intake, exercise frequency, and duration were not significantly associated with either variable (p>0.05). Conclusion: Fat intake plays a significant role in influencing body composition among active males. Higher fat intake is associated with decreased muscle mass and increased fat mass, highlighting the importance of managing fat intake to achieve optimal body composition.

Abstract

The problem of overnutrition and obesity tend to increase year by. Office employee are susceptible to physical inactivity and obesity. In context of current pandemic, exercising via online media, termed ‘tele-exercise’ may be an effective alternative intervention. However, the effect of compliance and timing of exercise on overall health-related output are still not often discussed. The purpose of the study is to compare the effect of tele-exercise done during working hours vs. after working hours on obese office employee’s weight loss and improvement of body fat percentage, as well as their relation to compliance level. The design of this study is quasi-experimental design, with obese office employee as participants, which then grouped into after work exercise (AW, n = 36, 1-hour duration) and mid-work exercise (DW, n = 21, 30-minute duration). Total sampling was used since the target population were under 100 people. Exercises were done 3 times/week for 12 weeks. Data collected were sample characteristics, bodyweight, and percentage of body fat. Both timing of intervention is effective on reducing body weight significantly (p<0.05). Significant reduction (p<0.05) on percentage of body fat is only occurring in DW group. Compliance level for AW and DW group are 63.75% and 61.23%, respectively, and being insignificant to each other (p>0.05). The contribution of compliance in shorter exercise/DW on body fat loss and weight loss is 23.1% and 20.9%, respectively; while the contribution of compliance in longer exercise/AW is 11.3% on body weight loss. A short, mid-working exercise have the similar or even better effect than 1-hour after-work exercise session on weight loss and body fat loss. We recommend tele-exercising during working hours for at least 30 minutes to achieve significant body weight and body fat loss.
