Abstract

This study aims to uncover and analyze hidden misconceptions in algebraic understanding among first-year students in the Mathematics Education Department at a private university in Malang. Conducted from January to March 2024, the research involves two first-year students as subjects. The first subject exhibits the misconception known as "illegal canceling," while the second subject demonstrates the "assumption of distributivity of exponents." Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, diagnostic interviews and problem-solving tasks were employed to identify and understand these misconceptions. Our findings indicate that these hidden misconceptions significantly hinder the students' ability to correctly solve algebraic problems and understand underlying concepts. For the first subject, the error in illegal canceling often led to incorrect simplifications, while the second subject's erroneous application of exponent rules resulted in fundamentally flawed solutions. By systematically categorizing these misconceptions, the study offers tailored instructional strategies to effectively address and correct them. This research highlights the critical need for early detection and targeted intervention in mathematical education. By providing a deeper insight into specific algebraic misunderstandings, the study suggests practical approaches for educators to enhance their teaching methodologies, ultimately improving students' overall algebra comprehension. The novelty of this research lies in its detailed focus on hidden misconceptions and the provision of actionable solutions, offering a fresh perspective on improving algebra education for first-year university students.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study reviews students’ negative perceptions of mathematics and examines how philosophies of mathematics education shape perceptions and teaching practice. Using a PRISMA-2020–based Systematic Literature Review, authors searched Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and Google Scholar and applied inclusion criteria: peer-reviewed full-text articles published between 1992 and 2024. Thirty-two studies were thematically analyzed. Findings show constructivism and humanism as the most prevalent approaches, while ethnomathematics is widely implemented within local cultural contexts in Asia and Latin America. Integrating these philosophies boosts students’ motivation, interest, and confidence, though perceptions of mathematics as abstract are not fully dispelled. Teachers cite curriculum pressure, limited training, and insufficient policy support as key barriers. The review underscores the urgency of grounding reflective pedagogy in the philosophy of mathematics education to improve students’ perceptions and learning experiences across contexts. Realism appears less dominant in classroom practice, highlighting the need for sustained policy backing and professional development.

Abstract

This development research aims is to develop an interactive of mathematics learning media using Visual Basic for Application based on Ms. program. Power Point. The development of this medium was using 4D development model, namely: (D) efine, (D) esign, (D) evelop, (D) issiminate, and the resulting product in the form of learning media on Euclid geometry subject. Based on the trial of product, the material expert stated that the product is valid with the validity percentage of 82.5%, the media expert stated that the product is valid with the validity percentage of 83.4%, and the practitioner stated that the product is valid with the validity percentage of 86% and the user / user stated the product practically with the percentage of practicality is 84%. Thus, it can be concluded that the resulting product is valid and the product can be applied in the classroom as well as beneficial for the students.

Abstract

This study investigates how a diverse set of traditional Malang foods—including Mendol Tempe, Bakwan Malang, Tempe Chips, Cwie Mie, Rawon, Bakso Bakar, Putri Salju cookies, and Orem-Orem—can function as culturally grounded contexts for developing students’ mathematical reasoning and model-construction competencies. Each food item reveals distinct mathematical structures: density and texture patterns in Mendol Tempe, irregular yet classifiable shapes in Bakwan Malang, fractal-like crisp patterns in Tempe Chips, proportional seasoning in Cwie Mie, time-based flavor development in Rawon, rotational symmetry in Bakso Bakar, geometric uniformity in Putri Salju, and combinatorial layering in Orem-Orem. Drawing on a philosophical perspective that positions mathematics as an interpretive lens for understanding real-world phenomena, students transition from sensory observation to formal modeling, constructing representations such as ratio models, time–intensity functions, geometric similarity models, rotational interval equations, and combinatorial structures. Findings indicate that embedding mathematical tasks in local culinary culture enhances conceptual understanding, promotes creative model construction, and strengthens culturally responsive pedagogical practices. This approach highlights the natural emergence of mathematical ideas from daily life experiences, making learning more meaningful, engaging, and contextually relevant.
