Abstract

Biology is a dynamic and constantly developing science. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia reported nine cases of childhood polio in East Java in January 2024. In addition, the Ministry of Health launched a pilot project to implement Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes as an innovation to control dengue fever in five big cities in Indonesia. This health problem is studied in biology lessons on viruses in senior high school. This paper aims to analyze the knowledge of the concepts of polioviruses and Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes in the biology teacher community in Sidoarjo. The respondents were 43 biology teachers in Sidoarjo. Respondents' prior knowledge was measured by pretest. After the respondent takes the pretest, the respondent gets the concept of the virus. After the material, respondents do a post-test. 11 pretest questions and 11 post-test questions are packaged in Google form. The results showed that all participants participated in the activity from start to finish, taking the pretest, listening to the material, and doing the post-test. The pretest mean score was 40.18, and the post-test mean score was 91.36. The highest pretest score was 81.81. The highest pretest score was 100. A total of 15 teachers (34.88%) were unsure that Wolbachia-infected mosquito was the best solution to reduce disease. Twenty-one respondents (48.83%) agreed mainly with society's concern that the Wolbachia-infected mosquito is dangerous for humans. Respondents' knowledge increased after receiving the concept of the virus

Abstract

Dengue fever (DF) is a viral disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) mosquito, which has the fastest spreading cases. Drug and vaccines are still unavailable, so the Government is focusing on mosquito control. One method of biological control is to use betta fish (Betta splendens) as predators of Ae. aegypti larvae. Betta fish have various varieties, which may have different abilities in preying on Ae. aegypti larvae. The study aimed to analyze the potential for controlling Ae. aegypti larvae using three varieties of B. splendens fish (multi-colored plakat koi, xanthic morph plakat, and halfmoon varieties) during the day and evening. The test was carried out by inserting 25 Ae. aegypti larvaes into an aquarium containing B. splendens fish. Testing starts at 12.00 and 15.00 WIB and replicated five times. Observations started from the fish started preying on larvae until the fish ate all larvae. The predation ability of each variety of B. splendens fish based on predation time was analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test and the unpaired data t-test. The analysis showed that the multi-colored koi plakat variety preyed Ae. aegypti larvae faster than the xanthic morph plaque variety (P < 0.05) and not significantly different from the halfmoon variety (P > 0.05). There was no difference in the ability of B. splendens fish to prey larvae during the day and evening (P > 0.05). B. splendens fish, the multi-colored koi plaque variety, and the halfmoon variety can be biological predators of Ae. aegypti larvae.

Abstract

Smartphone addiction was common among students and could affect sleep quality. Medical students tended to have poor sleep quality due to high academic demands. Smartphone addiction and inadequate sleep quality were known to negatively impact academic achievement. Aims: The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between smartphone addiction, sleep quality, and academic achievement among medical students at Universitas Ciputra Surabaya. Methods: This research was a quantitative, analytical observational, and cross-sectional study. The population consisted of 3rd, 5th, and 7th-semester medical students at Universitas Ciputra Surabaya. The research sample involved 118 respondents. Smartphone addiction was measured using the SAS-SV, sleep quality was assessed through the PSQI, and academic achievement was determined by MCQ scores. The study was analyzed using the chi-square test and contingency coefficient. Results: The study found no significant relationship between smartphone addiction and sleep quality (p = 1.0) or between sleep quality and academic achievement (p = 0.340). However, there was a weak positive correlation between smartphone addiction and academic achievement (p = 0.036). Additionally, no significant combined effect of smartphone addiction and sleep quality on academic achievement was identified (p = 0.058). Conclusion: While a weak positive association existed between smartphone addiction and academic achievement, there was no evidence of a relationship between sleep quality and academic achievement among medical students.

Abstract

Vaccination aims to have a specific impact on a certain disease so that one day you will be exposed to the disease, you will not get sick or only experience mild illness. Indonesia is carrying out the COVID-19 vaccination as part of the COVID-19 pandemic prevention strategy, with the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination aimed at protecting the public from SARS-CoV-2 infection which can cause illness and death due to COVID-19. The vaccination program is carried out by the government in 4 stages carried out by the Puskesmas as an extension of the local Health Office. Puskesmas are the spearhead of the implementation of the vaccination program for the community. Puskesmas Made Surabaya oversees several higher education institutions in the region. In carrying out the implementation of the phase 2 vaccination with a larger coverage, it requires the assistance of health workers and a place of implementation that facilitates access to services. Vaccination activity phase two is a government program and Puskesmas Made requires the support of health personnel and a place of service that facilitates access to vaccination services. Solutions in the form of assistance for health workers and a place for vaccine implementation that facilitate access to implementation are important in the success of the COVID-19 Vaccination program. The methods used are preparation of vaccine officer registration, participating in vaccine officer training and obtaining vaccinator certificates, technical coordination of vaccine implementation at Puskesmas, implementation, and evaluation of vaccination implementation. The results of the activities to achieve vaccination at the Ciputra University Vaccine post for institutions in the working area of the Puskesmas are well made.

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the medical field has become an important part of the learning process and health services. Preparing medical students as future healthcare professionals to understand, use, and implement AI responsibly is a crucial aspect. This level of readiness can vary depending on their knowledge, abilities, perceptions, and ethics in using AI. This study aims to determine the readiness of young medical students in the Surabaya area in using artificial intelligence based on these four domains, and to compare scores between first-year professional students and undergraduate students. This study used a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The instrument used was the Medical Artificial Intelligence Scale for Medical Students questionnaire, which consists of four domains: knowledge, abilities, perceptions, and ethics. The study sample was first-year and second-year professional students of the Faculty of Medicine, Ciputra University. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics including mean values, standard deviations, and frequency distributions for each domain. The results showed that the total readiness scores for DM1 (89.95 ± 11.84) and DM2 (88.38 ± 8.85) showed a positive picture, with minimal mean differences. The knowledge and skills domain showed almost uniform values between the two groups, while the ethics domain had the highest stability with a very small mean difference. These findings indicate that the readiness of professional students at the Faculty of Medicine, Ciputra University, towards the use of AI shows a positive and relatively even picture at all levels.
