Abstract

The city of Malang offers a wide variety of culinary delights. As time progresses and innovation increases, the existence of Chinese culinary culture continues to adapt to the locally available ingredients in Indonesia. Consequently, ingredients are adjusted to distinguish between non-halal and halal options, to suit the preferences of Indonesia’s majority population. This adaptation of ingredients not only supports cultural sensitivity but also enhances the diversity of Indonesia’s culinary heritage. Today’s younger generation is increasingly exploring various types of Chinese cuisine and is actively seeking information about which dishes are halal or non-halal. Chinese cuisine itself includes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. However, there is still a lack of understanding among some members of the younger generation regarding the difference between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Therefore, an informative medium is needed to both introduce Chinese cuisine and provide background on how it came to Indonesia. The design method used in this project is the creative communication design method, which involves collecting data through qualitative research. This photography essay book is designed in a 22 x 18 cm format, printed in full color a total of 95 pages, and features a hardcover with a matte lamination finish. The conclusion of this design project is the creation of a photography essay book that effectively introduces a variety of Chinese dishes through a modern yet authentic visual concept, presented with compelling photography and narrative text. Supporting media includes a brain-teasing card game, keychains, bookmarks, tent cards, t-shirts, posters, stickers, and a tripod banner.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to strengthen the digital competencies of junior high school students through a structured workshop on graphic design and photography. The activity was conducted on June 10–11, 2025 at Universitas Ma Chung and involved thirteen students from SMP Insan Amanah accompanied by their teachers. The program was designed based on prior identification of learning needs conducted through coordination with school representatives. The workshop integrated theoretical instruction and hands-on practice covering basic photography concepts such as angle, shot, triangle exposure, and three point lighting, followed by editorial layout training using Canva. Students were guided to edit photographs, arrange layouts, and select appropriate text elements. The results indicated improvements in students’ technical skills, learning engagement, and collaborative behavior. A campus tour conducted at the end of the program provided additional insight into the academic environment of higher education. Overall, the program demonstrated that practice-based learning effectively supports digital skill development among junior high school students.

Abstract

Batik has increasingly been adopted by higher education institutions as a medium of institutional identity; however, existing studies on institutional batik largely remain descriptive, emphasizing aesthetic outcomes rather than examining the systematic process through which institutional philosophical values are translated into visual form. This research addresses that gap by investigating the development of Ma Chung University’s batik motif through a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, positioned as a practice-based design research framework. The study aims not only to produce a batik motif, but to formulate a structured design process that articulates philosophical values and campus identity into visual elements such as motifs, composition, and color systems. Data were collected through literature review, institutional document analysis, in-depth interviews, observation, and user evaluation. Qualitative data were analyzed interpretatively to map philosophical values into visual symbols, while quantitative data were analyzed descriptively to assess design acceptance. The results demonstrate that the “Tugu Ma Chung Tirta Harmoni” batik motif functions as a visual system of institutional representation, rather than merely a decorative artifact. The study contributes academically by offering a replicable R&D-based model for institutional batik design, extending discussions in art and design research on visual identity, practice-based methodology, and culture-based design in higher education contexts.
