Abstract

Background and purpose: The incidence of fracture-related falls in young adults has been increased and the population with walking disorders has an increased risk of falling. It is very important to improve fall predictor parameters early in adulthood to reduce the risk of falling and injury in the future. This study aims to explore the differences of effectiveness between yoga and neuromuscular coordination exercise in improving several fall predictor parameters and Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) levels. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial involving 30 participants who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Participants were divided into two groups randomly. Group one was given yoga training intervention and group two was given neuromuscular coordination exercise. Participants` gait speed measurements were carried out using Shuttle Run Test. Participants` agility measurements were carried out using Hexagonal Obstacle Test. Participants` visual and auditory reaction time measurements were carried out using Whole Body Measuring equipment II type TKK – 1264 B. NGF measurement used the ELISA technique. Results: Paired sample Wilcoxon test showed yoga training was effective in improving all fall risk predictor parameters and NGF with p<0.05, but neuromuscular coordination exercise only showed improvement in one fall predictor parameter, namely speed. The unpaired sample Mann Whitney test proved that yoga training was significantly more effective with p<0.05 compared to neuromuscular coordination exercise in improving fall risk parameters, namely agility, visual reaction time, auditory reaction time, but not more effective in improving speed gait and NGF level. Conclusion: The We conclude that yoga training is the most effective exercise in improving fall risk parameters, namely agility, visual and auditory reaction time. Yoga training is a promising intervention in improving various aspects of fall risk.

Abstract

Background and purpose: One of the main risk factors for knee osteoarthritis is overweight. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of yoga exercise in reducing the risk of knee osteoarthritis and fibulin-3 levels in overweight populations. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial involving 24 participants who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: group one was given yoga exercise intervention and group two was given neuromuscular coordination exercise as the control group. Risk of knee osteoarthritis measurements were carried out using The Western Ontario and McMasters University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Fibulin-3 measurement used ELISA technique using human fibulin-3 kit, FBLN3 BT-LABkit 96T E4667Hu. Results: Participants of both groups were comparable, except for age where the control group is slightly older. Pre and post-test comparison showed improvement in pain, stiffness, physical function, total WOMAC score, and fibulin-3 levels in both groups. While, the post-test comparison between the two groups showed that yoga group has better scores on all indicators compared to the control groups which was statistically significant (p≤0.001). Conclusion: Both interventions are effective in reducing the risk of knee osteoarthritis and fibulin-3 levels, but yoga showed better result. We recommend yoga training to reduce the risk of knee osteoarthritis compared to conventional training. Future research is needed to measure other knee osteoarthritis biomarkers that describe the pathological process of knee osteoarthritis.

Abstract

Background: Neck pain is a major public health problem, especially for the elderly. One cause of neck pain is myofascial pain syndrome. Myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by the presence of trigger points that arise from the junction bands of muscle fibers. Three studies found that the prevalence of neck pain in the elderly was between 8.8% and 11.6%. Chronic neck pain causes increased muscle tone, decreased joint range of motion, functional impairment and activities of daily living, and decreased quality of life in the elderly. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of combining myofascial release technique and ultrasound with self-exercise and ultrasound in reducing pain and neck disability for the elderly. Methods: This experimental study used a randomized pre- and post-test control group design. The variables in this study were pain and neck disability. The participants were 24 people who were divided into Group 1 with myofascial release technique (n = 12) and Group 2 with self-exercise (n = 12). The intervention was given 3 times per week for 4 weeks. Results: The results showed that neck disability significantly decreased before and after the intervention in both groups (p<0.001). There was also a significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Myofascial release technique and self-exercise are effective in reducing neck pain and disability in the elderly with myofascial pain syndrome. However, the combination of ultrasound and myofascial release technique is more effective than ultrasound and self-exercise in reducing neck pain and disability in the elderly with myofascial pain syndrome.

Abstract

Background: In the modern era, the rapid development of technology has affected many aspects of life, including the increasing popularity of online gaming among teenagers and adults. As a form of professional video game competition, e-sports has been recognized globally and nationally. However, prolonged gaming activities in a static sitting position often lead to health problems, one of which is low back pain (LBP). This study aimed to assess the association between sitting position and sitting duration with the incidence of LBP in e-sports players. Methods: This study used an observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample totaled 68 e-sports players in East Denpasar who were selected through a purposive sampling method. The inclusion criteria were 20-30 years old and had an average body mass index (BMI), while the exclusion criteria had injuries to the wrist or spine. Data were collected using the rapid whole body assessment (REBA) worksheet questionnaire to assess the sitting position and the modified oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire (M-ODI) to determine the incidence of LBP. Data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. Results: The results showed that most of the sample had a moderate risk of sitting position (95.7%) and sitting more than 4 hours per day (67.6%). Correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between sitting position and LBP incidence (r = 0.371; p < 0.05) and between sitting duration and LBP incidence (r = 0.585; p < 0.05). The positive correlation value indicates that the worse the sitting position and the longer the sitting duration, the higher the risk of LBP. Conclusion: This study concludes that sitting position and duration are significantly associated with the incidence of LBP in e-sports players. This study is expected to educate e-sports players on the importance of ergonomic sitting positions and limiting sitting duration to reduce the risk of LBP.

Abstract

Introduction: The percentage of the elderly population in Bali increased to 12.47% in 2020, leading to heightened risks and fear of falling with age. One measure to assess fear of falling is the ABC-6 Scale, which gauges self-confidence in maintaining body balance. A well-measured instrument requires good validity and reliability. Testing the validity and reliability of the questionnaire is essential to demonstrate its usefulness in measuring fear of falling and screening fall risks in the future. Methods: This study employed a descriptive survey method to assess content validity using expert evaluation and a cross-sectional design with a purposive sampling technique involving 49 subjects. Validity testing utilized Pearson product-moment correlation for construct validity and Content Validity Index for content validity assessment. Reliability testing employed Cronbach's alpha to assess internal consistency. Results: The analysis revealed good construct validity values (0.509-0.823) and excellent content validity index scores (S-CVI/Ave=0.98). Reliability analysis using Cronbach's alpha demonstrated good reliability (0.775). Conclusion: The modified Indonesian version of the ABC-6 Scale is valid and reliable for screening and evaluating fear of falling among older people.
