Abstract

Hot springs are natural habitats for thermophilic and hyperthermophilic microorganisms with optimal growth temperatures. This study was conducted using a metagenomic approach to analyze the microbial communities of Nglimut hot spring soils, Mount Ungaran. This study used an exploratory observational method. A total of ten samples of hot spring sediment soil were taken purposively in Nglimut hot spring, Mount Ungaran. A total of 600 grams of hot spring sediment soil samples were used for chemical analysis and 50 grams of samples for metagenomic analysis based on 16S rRNA V3-V4 gene marker regions. The total microbiota sequences analyzed in this study were 103,889 OTUs, consisting of 98,603 Bacteria OTUs and 5,286 Archaea OTUs. At the phylum level, all DNA sequences of soil microbiota bacteria identified 53 phyla, dominated by Proteobacteria (19.42%), Chloroflexi (17.21%), Nitrospirota (13.76%), Bacteroidota (7.67%) and Firmicutes (7.33%). At the order level, 305 bacterial orders were found, dominated by Nitrospirales (12.35%), Burkholderiales (7.99%), Rhizobiales (5.77%), Ignavibacteriales (4.06), and Anaerolineales (3.92%). A total of nine archaea phyla were identified in the hot spring soil, dominated by Crenarchaeota (85.13%), Nanoarchaeota (7.13%) and Halobacterota (5.58%). At the order level, 15 archaea orders were identified, dominated by Nitrosopumilales (64.08%), Nitrososphaerales (14.39%), Woesearchaeales (7.24%), Bathyarchaeia (6.15%), and Methanosarciniales (5.07%). The bacteria that dominate the soil of hot springs are bacteria that can survive at high temperatures (thermophilic) and are able to utilize sulfur. The presence of archaea in hot spring soils helps increase the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria in sulfur-containing soils.

Abstract

Linear air track is often used in physics learning for linear motion experiments because it can reduce friction between objects with trajectories. However,  the use of air tracks for motion experiments in schools often does not care about aspects of air drag, so the purpose of this study is to calculate the air friction contained in the air track and as an offer of enrichment experiments at senior high school. The research method used is an experimental method that uses a set of air track experimental devices consisting of trajectors, carts, blower, and time counters with light sensors. Cart objects with a mass of 120.02 gram is given the initial velocity variation 12.272 cm/s, 16.286 cm/s and 24.599 cm/s. Then the time recorded when the cart crosses the distance of 10 cm to 110 cm at intervals of 10 cm. This experiment is conducted in the Integrated Science Laboratory, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Semarang. The second Newton law has been derived to obtain a special exponential function, so the relation between distance and time is obtained. The non-linear relation between distance and time shows the effect of air drag. Then, fitting the graph of the distance and time relation so that the air drag constants obtained are (10.6 ± 0.1) gram/s, (10.6 ± 0.2) gram/s, and (11.1 ± 0.2) gram/s. The results of the air drag constants obtained can be additional data as a factor affecting experiments using linear air track and can be enrichment experiments at senior high school laboratory.

Abstract

Abstract

Every Indonesian citizen is blessed to receive a proper education, including the children of migrant workers abroad. Until now, there has not been much attention to education for the children of migrant workers. Sanggar Sentul Kuala Lumpur exists as a forum to facilitate non-formal education for the children of migrant workers in Kuala Lumpur and its surroundings. The non-formal education carried out at Sanggar Sentul has certainly not run optimally due to several limitations such as infrastructure, the relatively diverse age range of children, and the lack of a systematic curriculum being implemented. One of the learning activities that is rarely carried out is practicum in science subjects considering that there are not yet adequate practicum facilities there. Based on these problems, the community service team of Universitas Negeri Semarang carried out practical science training for students at Sanggar Sentul in an effort to improve the quality of learning for the children of migrant workers who attend school there. The activity was carried out by training studio students in three simple experiments: the Archimedes experiment, making buildings from straws, and making lava lamps. The students were very enthusiastic about participating in the practicum. Apart from that, this activity also received a very good assessment from students.

Abstract

Environmental damage is often found to be a global issue today. One of the causes of ecological problems is the use of cooking oil. Used cooking oil is oil that is repeatedly used and no longer used. The negative impact if used cooking oil is thrown directly into the environment without processing it first is very large, such as environmental pollution, thereby damaging the aquatic ecosystem. However, public awareness about managing this waste still needs to be improved. This community service activity aims to increase public knowledge of the impact of using and disposing of used cooking oil on body health and the environment and provide education regarding making aromatherapy candles using used cooking oil waste. This community service activity was carried out on August 1, 2023, at Karanganyar Village Hall, Bantarbolang District, Pemalang Regency. PKK women attended this activity in 6 hamlets in Karanganyar Village. Educational activities include presenting material to service providers and practicing making aromatherapy candles from used cooking oil. As a result of this service, all participants understand the negative impacts of used cooking oil that need to be avoided and how to process used cooking oil into aromatherapy candles. Some participants were even interested in making the product an independent business.
