Abstract

Background: Oral health plays an important role in overall health and quality of life among the elderly. The presence of soft tissue lesions in the oral cavity, particularly in this vulnerable population, warrants attention due to its potential association with systemic health conditions and overall quality of life. Maintaining a high quality of life is crucial, as it is closely linked to health status, life satisfaction, and overall well-being. This study aimed to examine oral health–related quality of life among the elderly, with particular focus on the presence of pathological soft tissue lesions. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection included demographic information, administration of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire, and comprehensive intraoral examinations to identify pathological lesions. The Mann–Whitney U test was used to compare quality-of-life scores between elderly individuals with and without pathological lesions. Results: Among the 94 subjects examined, 36 were found to have pathological lesions, while none of the 58 (p=0.024, p<0.05) showed a difference in the quality of life between elderly individuals with and without pathological lesions. Conclusion: There is a significant difference in oral health–related quality of life among the elderly, which is influenced by the presence of pathological soft tissue lesions.

Abstract

Introduction: Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-income countries. Air pollution, including PM2.5, significantly contributes to ARI cases, with children as a vulnerable group. Public knowledge and behavior play crucial roles in reducing ARI prevalence. Islamic-based health counseling integrates health education with religious values, enhancing public awareness while reinforcing faith and nurturing noble individuals. Method: This quasi-experimental study employed a one-group pre-test and post-test design, conducted at Global Islamic School Junior High School, East Jakarta. Primary data were collected using a questionnaire from 125 respondents selected through total sampling. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Result: After counseling, the proportion of students with good knowledge increased from 75.2% (94 students) to 97.6% (122 students). The Wilcoxon test yielded a Z value of -6.794 with a significance level of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant improvement in knowledge after the intervention. Conclusion: There is a significant positive relationship between health counseling and students' knowledge about air pollution as a cause of ARI. Counseling is effective in improving knowledge within an Islamic perspective, aligning with Maqasid Sharia, which emphasizes protecting the soul (Muhafazah al-Nafs) and intellect (Muhafazah al-Aql) through health education. This approach not only prevents disease but also supports the welfare of the community, demonstrating the potential of integrating religious and health education to address public health challenges.
