Abstract

Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to enhance English grammar learning at a junior high school level by incorporating game-based activities, focusing on the simple present tense. The primary objective was to address identified challenges, such as low student enthusiasm and understanding of grammatical concepts. The study used classroom action research, unfolded in three cycles, each refining the game-based approach based on insights from the previous cycle. The methodology involved pre-tests, game-based lessons, observations, and reflective assessments. Results demonstrated sustained improvements, with increased scores and active participation. Key findings indicated enhanced active participation, motivation, concept understanding, collaboration, spontaneous English use, and a deeper understanding of the game-based method's shortcomings. The time required for understanding they were varied, reflecting the effectiveness of scaffolding in the learning environment. Implications of the research suggest the continued integration of game-based approaches, recognizing the diverse learning needs of students. Teachers should tailor scaffolding strategies to individual ZPDs, fostering collaboration and addressing language apprehension. The study contributes to the broader discourse on effective language teaching methodologies, emphasizing the dynamic interplay of theory and practice in the language learning classroom.

Abstract

Despite the World Health Organization's continued advocacy for the adoption of Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) as a systematic approach to uncovering and addressing the root causes of maternal and perinatal mortality, death rates within these populations remain alarmingly high in many regions. The effectiveness of MPDSR varies widely across settings, often limited by weak health information systems, reporting delays, blame-oriented cultures, and poor follow-up of audit recommendations. This scoping review aims to examine the practical application of MPDSR across various real-world contexts, with a particular emphasis on the mechanisms for identifying, reporting, evaluating, and responding to maternal and perinatal deaths, as well as the factors that enable or hinder these processes. Peer-reviewed publications from the past decade were systematically retrieved from major databases, including PubMed, Wiley, and ScienceDirect. The review identified key barriers such as shortages of skilled personnel, incomplete documentation, and limited financial and monitoring resources, while effective MPDSR was facilitated by community engagement, clear reporting systems, and supportive policies. These findings highlight the need to strengthen workforce capacity, data systems, and governance to reduce preventable maternal and neonatal deaths.

Abstract

Background: Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) remains a public health threat in low- and middle-income countries due to suboptimal coverage of complete-dose maternal immunization. Although TT and Td vaccines are clinically effective, their cost-effectiveness in different country contexts needs systematic assessment. Purpose: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of maternal tetanus toxoid (TT) and tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccination in developing countries, focusing on economic outcomes and contextual variations. Methods: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature was searched in PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Wiley, and Crossref. Inclusion criteria comprised CEA/CUA studies on maternal TT/Td immunization in developing countries. Reporting quality was assessed using the CHEERS 2022 checklist. Results: From 2,040 records, four studies met inclusion criteria. All reported maternal TT/Td vaccination as highly cost-effective, with ICERs ranging from USD 3.61 to 15,600 per DALY or life-year saved. Key uncertainties included vaccine effectiveness and distribution costs, while program efficiency varied by local health system conditions. Conclusion: Complete-dose maternal TT/Td immunization is a highly cost-effective public health intervention in resource-limited settings. However, policy implementation must be adapted to local contexts and supported by robust sensitivity analysis and reliable primary data.

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct the historical development of Kampung Pecinan Lasem, one of the oldest Chinese settlements in Indonesia, throughout the twentieth century. Although Lasem has long been recognized as an important historical settlement, scholarly discussions have largely focused on Chinatowns in larger urban centers, leaving smaller historical communities such as Lasem relatively underexplored. This research therefore examines the transformation of Kampung Pecinan Lasem through three interconnected dimensions: architectural development, Chinese–Javanese cultural acculturation, and socio-economic dynamics. The study employs the historical method, which includes heuristics through field observations, interviews, and document studies, followed by source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings indicate that the development of Kampung Pecinan Lasem was strongly influenced by major political transitions in Indonesia, from the colonial period and Japanese occupation to the independence revolution and the New Order era. These changes shaped the transformation of architectural forms from traditional Chinese–Javanese structures into hybrid forms incorporating European and modern elements while maintaining symbolic cultural features. Cultural acculturation also occurred in everyday practices such as batik production, religious rituals, language use, and culinary traditions, resulting in the emergence of a distinctive local identity known as “Cina Lasem.” In addition, the settlement played an important socio-economic role as a center of trade and batik production that supported local economic networks involving both Chinese entrepreneurs and Javanese workers. These findings demonstrate that Kampung Pecinan Lasem represents a historically resilient cultural landscape where architectural hybridity, cultural interaction, and economic cooperation enabled the community to adapt to changing political and social conditions throughout the twentieth century.
