Abstract

Spanning eight ethnic cultures with different histories, the Province of North Sumatra keeps an abundance of historical stories, so it is significant to be able to build the narrative of ethnicity in the museum. The existence of the exhibition space that is still in the concept of a traditional museum makes the narrative in the cultural exhibition space in the museum has not yet developed. Narratives can build communication in creating understanding between humans and collections with story ideas conveyed. So that the narrative spatial approach is considered ideal to build a story. The purpose of this research is to be able to apply the interior of the narrative space through the context, content, scenarios, messages, and experiences of visitors. The method used in this study is a qualitative method summarized by the Design Thinking approach. The research data were obtained from literature studies, interviews, and direct observation of the exhibition room of the State Museum of North Sumatra. The result of this research is to create a maximum narrative in the exhibition space that will not be separated from the determination of Plot and Pace, arranged of Dramatic Arc, and the application of its presentation. The composition of the ethnic plot is divided into several life-to-death phases. Then determine the storyline includes a beginning, a muddle, and an end. And the last is the application of narrative elements, both the concept of content presentation to the setting of narrative media. So, by applying the narrative space approach in the North Sumatra State Museum, the presentation of ethnic narratives is more optimal and creates a different experience by playing with the emotions of visitors in each exhibition scenario.

Abstract

As a farming community who still applies ancestral rules, the Sundanese Kasepuhan Ciptagelar people have their own rules regarding food processing, starting from storing rice in the leuit (barn), pounding rice in saung lisung, to cooking rice in goah (cooking area). This community also never lacks food, even has sufficient food supplies for the next few years, which is why the main objective of this research is to see the relationship between the use of leuit, saung lisung, and goah with the success of the Kasepuhan Ciptagelar community in managing food, especially in terms of building layout. Based on these objectives, this research is included in ethnographic research with qualitative research methods. The data in this study were obtained from the results of site-plan observations of the Sundanese Kasepuhan Ciptagelar traditional village, the distance between buildings, and the total number of buildings. The data then analyzed using Edward Relph's theory of space and distance, which states that the distance of each building represents its own identity and meaning which is based on human understanding of space or the distance from the inhabited environment. The analysis of the position and distance of the building was then linked to the success of the food management of the Kasepuhan Ciptagelar community using the interpretive analysis method. The results of the study found that the entire Kasepuhan Ciptagelar village is a large area so that it is divided into several building clusters which are quite far apart from each other. Even so, because the three objects of this research are an integrated unit that cannot be separated, then they will always exist in each of the smallest and most isolated clusters. Thus, each cluster has at least one leuit complex where rice is stored, one saung lisung for pounding rice, and each house has a goah for cooking rice. The existence of these three types of buildings makes each cluster sovereign in terms of food where they each have facilities to store rice, pound rice, and cook rice.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country with high potential against the threat of natural disasters. Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) noted that the number of natural disasters occurring during 2018-2019 has increased. Many lost their homes, property, and public facilities. It has a direct impact on the psychological condition of the victim, therefore temporary shelters are urgently needed by the victims after the disaster. Shelter has an important role to play in reducing the risk of death and vulnerability and strengthening community resilience. Temporary shelter is intended as one of the recovery efforts that bridges the transition period between the emergency response phase and the reconstruction period completed. The provision of temporary shelter is expected to alleviate the suffering of disaster victims and protect victims from future disasters, but the needs and rights of many victims are not fulfilled. This research aims to explain and produce findings related to the character of temporary shelters for victims of natural disasters in meeting the needs of their residents. In this research the authors used descriptive qualitative methods. Data collection is done by observation techniques, interviews and through secondary data. The process of data analysis method is done by comparing each aspect studied and looking at the pattern of relationship then linking the findings with disaster mitigation efforts. Analysis of the structure of space relationships is done by the Space Syntax analysis method. The results of this research produced a variety of temporary shelter characters, among others are aspects of type and shape, the results found that there are 2 organizations of shapes applied to temporary shelters, namely linear shapes and classified shapes, shelter sizes meet the capacity needs for one family (4-5 people), then the space programs applied are private spaces and public spaces , while in the accessibility aspect, there are 3 types of space configurations that result in that space A (public space) has easy access to, building materials used are natural materials and building materials, as well as in construction systems using earthquake-resistant building systems and knockdown systems so that they can be dismantled because of their temporary nature.

Abstract

Literature Review: Promotional Signage and Its Implications for Consumer Behavior in The Fashion Retail Industry. The fashion retail industry in Indonesia has experienced significant growth in 2024, driven by economic recovery post-pandemic. This competitive landscape demands innovation, particularly in marketing strategies, to attract consumers and enhance their in-store shopping experience. One such strategy is promotional signage, a visual marketing tool designed to capture attention, provide information, and influence purchasing decisions. This study aims to explore the impact of promotional signage on consumer behavior in fashion retail stores. Utilizing a literature review method, this research systematically analyzes previous studies on the role of promotional signage in guiding consumer movement, increasing product visibility, and shaping shopping experiences. Findings indicate that effective signage can significantly influence consumer attention, navigation, and purchase behavior. Well-designed promotional signage not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of retail spaces but also acts as a navigational guide that directs consumers toward specific areas of interest. Additionally, signage plays a crucial role in impulse buying and brand communication. The study concludes that promotional signage is a strategic component of visual merchandising, contributing to consumer engagement, purchase decisions, and overall shopping satisfaction. Retailers should focus on designing promotional signage that is visually appealing, strategically placed, and aligned with brand identity to optimize consumer experience and increase sales conversion.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how the indigenous knowledge lexicon of Balinese undagi (traditional architects) in architecture can be transferred into visual cinematography to preserve cultural heritage, with a focus on engaging broader audiences. Employing an iconographic approach, the research analyzes the documentary Calaccitra Undagi Mahottama: Biografi I Gusti Made Gede (1843-1940) through three stages: pre-iconographic identification of visual motifs, iconographic interpretation of thematic meanings, and iconological assessment of cultural significance. Results reveal that Balinese architectural lexicons—such as Tri Mandala, Sanga Mandala, and CWSGR—are effectively abstracted into cinematic frames via intermediality, using symbolic natural imagery and spatial grids rather than physical structures to convey aesthetic and philosophical values. The study concludes that visual cinematography offers a potent medium for preserving architectural heritage by translating static spatial concepts into dynamic narratives, fostering continuity of traditional knowledge, particularly among younger generations, though its efficacy hinges on audience reception and contextual adaptation.

Abstract

The knowledge of producing batik has been passed down from generation to generation. This research uses a motion capture device to document the batik-making activities using canting to yield accurate movement patterns of the batik artisans in digital form. The study aims to identify the hand movements of the batik artisans as they work with canting, which will serve as the basis for teaching the traditional batik-making process to beginners. This study starts with an ethnographic approach: observations and interviews conducted at several batik houses in Central Java, followed by ergonomic and human factors laboratory experiments. By analyzing the motion captures, we learn that a batik artisan makes a specific hand movement pattern known as Pola Layangan. Pola Layangan forms a cycle comprising four phases: the malam phase, the blowing phase, the drawing phase, and the finishing phase. The digital documentation of this hand movement pattern can serve as a reference for studying batik-making activities. It can also serve as a basis for teaching beginners the traditional batik-making process.

Abstract

Technology integrates technical aspects with social, economic, political, and cultural aspects of human life, offering three layers of meaning: artifact, process, and knowledge. This research examines Rumah Belajar ERBE, a social learning space for impoverished communities, from a perspective known as social shaping of technology (SST). This research employs moment translation analysis, a technique derived from actor-network theory, to investigate the affordances that the learning space provides to the local community. This article explores the dynamic relationship between ERBE, which is composed of artifacts and activities, to understand the role of social technology in improving the lives of scavenger village residents. The findings reveal that the initiator and his house require proximity to ERBE to optimize the social learning process. Physical and functional affordances identified through the space's character and the use of non-fixed furniture make them multi-functional rooms that accommodate poor communities' social learning.

Abstract

Feeder Train Services serve as a strategic solution in strengthening connectivity between KCJB main stations and urban areas such as Bandung and Cimahi. This study aims to analyze the evaluation methods or conditions of universal design-based interior wayfinding elements applied at Jakarta-Bandung Fast Train (KCJB) feeder stations. This study uses a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach with a descriptive qualitative design to identify universal design-based interior wayfinding elements at feeder stations by analyzing academic articles and grey literature from the Scopus and Google Scholar databases between 2021 and 2025. This study describes the regulations and standardization of interior wayfinding components at train stations by reviewing visual, technical, and spatial elements. The results of the literature review show that the evaluation of wayfinding implementation can be done through direct observation and questionnaires for users. This wayfinding evaluation needs to be applied, especially on feeder trains, which will effectively improve user movement efficiency, safety, and overall travel experience, as well as strengthen the integration of public transportation services in metropolitan areas. Furthermore, the literature review also emphasizes that the integration of conceptual evaluation and technical standards in wayfinding is crucial to improve user orientation, accessibility, and travel efficiency, thereby supporting safety and multimodal connectivity at KCJB feeder stations.
