Abstract

Kite is a traditional game with many mathematical concepts, making them applicable in ethno-STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)-based learning. Therefore, this research explores the mathematical concepts inherent in kite flying related to ethnomathematics and STEM education. This research employs a qualitative exploratory approach. Data are collected through three methods: documentation, observation, and interviews. After collecting data, a descriptive analysis is conducted, including data reduction, presentation, and verification. Based on the data analysis, the mathematical concepts in kite-making include geometry, measurement, area and perimeter calculations, ratios and scales, patterns and symmetry, and arithmetic. Kite-making can be applied in ethno-STEM-based mathematics learning as it aligns with the current curriculum and adheres to STEM learning principles. Therefore, kite-making can serve as a tool for mathematics education, making learning more meaningful, enjoyable, interactive, and contextual. This research exploration suggests that numerous mathematical concepts can be further examined in ethno-STEM-based learning. Additionally, this research highlights the connection between mathematics and the socio-cultural context.

Abstract

Abstract

Numeracy literacy skills are basic competencies that need to be developed in junior high school (SMP) students in the 21st century. However, mathematics learning in schools has not yet linked the concept of mathematics to the cultural context in daily life. This research aims to develop Student Worksheets (LKPD) in the Context of Tabut Culture with a valid and practical STEAM approach to facilitate students' numeracy literacy. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with a 4D development model comprising define, design, and develop stages, while the disseminate stage is not carried out. The research subjects included 31 students and 1 mathematics teacher in grade VII of SMPN 1 Kepahiang. The research instrument consists of validation sheets and questionnaires on the practicality of students and teachers. The study's results showed that the LKPD developed had a validity rate of 87.83% in the very valid category. The results of the practicality test showed that 80.67% of students were in the practical category, and 82.27% of teachers were in the very practical category. These findings show that LKPD, in the context of Ark Culture with a STEAM approach, is suitable as innovative teaching materials to support contextual mathematics learning and improve students' numeracy literacy.

Abstract

Mathematical critical thinking ability is the capacity to investigate, discover, connect, and assess every aspect of a problem carefully and thoughtfully to arrive at the best solution. This study aims to describe students' mathematical critical thinking abilities regarding circles in Grade VIII at SMP Negeri 09 Lebong. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with 20 student participants. Three students were interviewed: one with high ability, one with medium ability, and one with low ability. Data collection methods included tests, interviews, and documentation. The research instruments consisted of test items and interview guidelines. The data analysis technique involved data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study show that high-ability students met all indicators of mathematical critical thinking: Interpretation, Analysis, Evaluation, and Conclusion. Medium-ability students met two indicators: Interpretation and Analysis. Low-ability students were unable to meet the indicators of mathematical critical thinking: Interpretation, Analysis, Evaluation, and Conclusion.

Abstract

This study aims to observe the differences in students' mathematical problem-solving abilities and learning independence in learning with the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach based on Engineering Design Thinking (EDT), the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach, and conventional learning. This study is a quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest control group design. The study population was all seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Bengkulu City in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data analysis was carried out using one-way ANOVA. The results showed that there were significant differences in students' mathematical problem-solving abilities taught with the PMRI approach based on EDT, PMRI, and conventional learning (F = 3.629; p = 0.031 < 0.05). The average posttest of students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in the PMRI class based on Engineering Design Thinking was 28.75, the PMRI class was 26.84, and the conventional learning class was 24.42. In addition, there was a significant difference in student learning independence between the three learning groups (F = 3.734; p = 0.029 < 0.05). The average student learning independence in the EDT-based PMRI class was 73.94, higher than the PMRI class (68.95) and the conventional learning class (68.13). Based on these results, EDT-based PMRI learning is more effective in improving students' mathematical problem-solving abilities and learning independence. Keywords: PMRI, Engineering Design Thinking (EDT), Mathematical Problem Solving Ability, Learning Independence.
