Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether teaching vocabulary using the Flyswatter game enhanced student vocabulary. The author used a flyswatter game as part of her action research in the classroom to find a solution. One cycle was used by the author in this study. Every cycle has four meetings. One class of twenty-four students participated in this investigation. The writer employed documentation, test sheets, and observation sheets as tools for gathering data. Based on the research findings, the students' progressive mean was displayed. The mean of the first meeting was 53.5; the second was 55.3; the third was 61.9; the fourth was 66.1 and the fifth was 75,5. As a result, the post-test mean was greater than the pre-test mean. The information collected from the observation sheet suggested that the pupils made progress. Research suggests that using the flyswatter game helps students' vocabularies. Finally, the flyswatter game may help SMPN 2 Tambangan students become more proficient in the language.

Abstract

This research is Classrom Action Research using tow cycles, anda each cyecle has 3 meetings. One cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data collection techniques used in this research are observasi, questionnaires, documentation, and the type of research used is quantitative and qualitative research. Based on the results of the research conducted, it can be conluded that use of puzzle learning media can increase the learning motivation of class V students in the research there was an increase in student learning motivation, namely from the results of cycle II which reached an average of 79,73% and The result from cycle I reached an average of 61,66%. Therefore, the increase obtained by researchers from cycles I and II increased 18,07%.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) and its impact on English Language Teaching (ELT). The research addresses the issue of how technology influences students' learning experiences in ELT. The study aims to examine students' perspectives on the use of digital tools in language learning and their effectiveness in enhancing the learning process. A case study approach was employed, with data collected through the interactive platform Mentimeter. Fourteen students from the Tadris Bahasa Inggris Study Program at STAIN Mandailing Natal participated by providing their opinions on the integration of technology in ELT during a presentation session. The analysis reveals that the majority of respondents expressed positive perceptions of technology use in ELT. Students highlighted those various digital tools introduce a new dimension to learning, making the process more engaging and accessible. Key benefits identified include easier access to resources, increased interactivity, and greater flexibility in learning. These findings emphasize the significance of incorporating digital tools into language instruction to enhance the overall learning experience.

Abstract

Pelatihan penyusunan bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris berbasis aplikasi canva adalah sebuah metode modern dalam pengembangan materi pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Penggunaan canva sebagai platform desain grafis yang user-friendly memungkinkan pendidik untuk membuat materi ajar yang menarik dan berkualitas tinggi sehingga memudahkan siswa dalam memahami materi. Pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pemahaman tentang cara membuat desain visual yang menarik, menggunakan berbagai elemen desain seperti teks, gambar, dan ikon serta mengoptimalkan tata letak untuk memberikan pesan yang jelas dalam bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris short functional text. Peserta pelatihan ini adalah mahasiswa semester VI Tadris Bahasa Inggris berjumlah 17 orang. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengabdian ini adalah pendekatan Participatory Action Research (PAR). Hasil dari pelatihan ini adalah 1) mahasiswa mendapatkan pemahaman tentang penggunaan aplikasi canva dalam menyusun bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris. 2) mahasiswa dapat membuat bahan ajar short functional text seperti notice, announcement, warning, dan invitation card menggunakan aplikasi canva.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ perceptions of the use of storytelling as a technique to improve speaking ability in English. The research was conducted with 22 students of the English Education Study Program at STAIN Mandailing Natal during the fifth semester. Data were collected through a questionnaire (8 closed-ended) and semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that students perceived storytelling as an effective strategy to enhance fluency, vocabulary mastery, confidence, and communicative competence in everyday situations. Storytelling also increased classroom engagement and motivation. Furthermore, the interview data demonstrated that storytelling encouraged students to express opinions more easily and confidently, reduced speaking anxiety, and facilitated vocabulary retention. The study concludes that storytelling is not only an enjoyable and creative method but also a pedagogically significant technique that can bridge classroom learning with real-life communication.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini memiliki tujuan untuk menambah wawasan masyarakat Koto Rajo tentang bahaya dari pernikahan yang dilakukan di usia dini. Pengabdian ini dilakukan dalam bntuk seminar menggunakan metode PAR (Participatory Action Research) dengan langkah pertama penjelasan materi mengenai pengenalan  hak anak, konsekuensi pernikahan dini, pentingnya pendidikan, kesehatan reproduksi, hukum dan kebijakan pernikahan. Pelatihan ini dilakukan sehari pada tanggal 1 Agustus 2024  di SMPN 3 Lembah Melintang yang dhadiri oleh 60 siswa se Jorong Koto Sawah Tengah, Nagarai Koto Sawah. Pemateri dalam seminar ini adalah Siti Hawa Lubis. Materi yang disampaikan hanya poin-poin pentingnya saja agar lebih mudah memahami tentang pernikahan dini. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman siswa siswi SMPN 3 Lembah Melintang mengenai bahaya pernikaan dini.

Abstract

This study analyzes common errors made by students in constructing simple past tense interrogative sentences, focusing on English language learners at STAIN Mandailing Natal who have completed the Intermediate Grammar course. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze the types of errors that students often encounter when constructing simple past tense interrogative sentences, such as incorrect verb forms after the auxiliary verb “did”, confusion between positive, negative, and interrogative forms, and inappropriate placement of auxiliary verbs. The findings indicate that these errors stem from a lack of understanding of tense structures and a lack of practice in constructing interrogative sentences. This study highlights the importance of grammar in effective communication and suggests that teachers implement targeted teaching strategies to address these common errors. By identifying specific areas where students experience difficulties, this study aims to contribute to better teaching methods and improve students’ proficiency in using simple past tense interrogative sentences. Ultimately, this study underlines the importance of integrating grammar education into the English curriculum to foster better language acquisition and communication skills among learners.

Abstract

The study employed a qualitative research design with interviews as the primary instrument of data collection. The participants of this research were eleventh-grade students who had experience in using the application. The focus of the study was on three main aspects: the ways in which students use the SpeakPal application in their learning process, their perceptions of the advantages and usefulness of this tool to increase speaking ability, and the challenges they encounter during its implementation.The findings revealed that most students expressed positive perceptions toward the application. They viewed Speak Pal as a practical, enjoyable, and helpful tool that provides opportunities to practice speaking at any time and in any place, beyond classroom limitations. The features offered, such as daily speaking exercises, pronunciation practice, and interactive conversations, were considered effective in building students’ confidence, enriching vocabulary, and supporting independent learning. In addition, SpeakPal was reported to reduce feelings of shyness and nervousness, thus increasing students’ fluency when speaking English. Nevertheless, some obstacles were identified, including unstable internet connectivity, restricted access to premium features, and occasional difficulty in understanding automated feedback provided by the application.In conclusion, the study emphasizes that SpeakPal significantly contributes to students’ speaking development. The findings further suggest that integrating applications like Speak Pal into English learning can enhance motivation, foster learner autonomy, and improve students’ overall speaking proficiency.

Abstract

Poda Na Lima merupakan kearifan lokal etnik Angkola-Mandailingyaitu lima nasehat yang digunakan sebagai dasar untuk pembentukankarakter Islami dalam kehidupan masyarakatnya. Kearifan lokal inisejalan dengan tujuan Islam yakni menjaga kebersihan dan kesucianbaik secara lahir maupun batin. Penelitian ini menjelaskan tentangbagaimana karakter Islami berdasarkan kearifan lokal Poda Na limapada masyarakat Angkola-Mandailing. Lima pokok yang terkandungpada Poda Na Lima yaitu paias rohamu (kewajiban untuk menyucikanhati), paias pamatangmu (kewajiban membersihkan anggota tubuh),paias parabitonmu (kewajiban untuk membersihkan pakaian), paiasbagasmu (kewajiban untuk membersihkan rumah) dan paiaspakaranganmu (kewajiban untuk membersihkan lingkungan). Jenispenelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan menggunakan pendekatan  deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan observasi, wawancara mendalam dan tinjauan pustaka yang mengkaji langsung tentang Poda Na Lima. Analisis data digunakan secara sistematis mulai dari pengumpulan data, penyajian data, reduksi data hingga penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Poda Na Lima sebagai tradisi merupakan identitas yang sangat penting bagi masyarakat Angkola-Mandailing terutama untuk mewujudkan karakter dan kepribadian yang baik dalam rangka membangun tatanan hidup masyarakat yang bersih dan sehat. Pada saat yang sama juga menjadi pedoman dan landasan hidup yang dipegang oleh setiap kelompok etnik Angkola-Mandailing dalam menata kehidupan.
