Abstract

Geguritan is a form of modern Javanese poetry that utilizes the beauty of language and symbols to convey inner experiences and life values. The geguritan anthology Mendut-mendut by R. Djoko Prakoso is rich in aesthetic and symbolic elements that are worth studying, particularly in the geguritan titled “Dom”. This study aims to describe the aesthetics of stylistic language and symbols in the geguritan “Dom”. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method using a stylistic and semiotic approach. The research data consist of words, phrases, lines, and stanzas containing aesthetic elements of stylistic language and symbolism in Dom’s geguritan. Data were collected through documentation and literature review, then analyzed descriptively. The results of the study indicate that the aesthetics of the geguritan are constructed through the use of connotative diction, metaphors, imagery, repetition, and wordplay, which shape aesthetic and emotional experiences. Additionally, symbols such as night, heart, eyes, soul, torch, pancer, and seed were identified, representing longing, love, loss, hope, reflection, and the process of inner maturation. The findings indicate that stylistic and semiotic aspects complement one another in constructing the depth of meaning and artistic value of geguritan. It is hoped that these findings will serve as a reference for the development of Javanese literary studies, particularly research on the aesthetics of stylistic features and symbols in modern geguritan.

Abstract

The role of educators in learning is not only defined by teaching skills but also by their ability to develop moral and spiritual awareness. In this context, the teacher’s role can be re-examined through local cultural values, particularly in wayang performances that contain moral, spiritual, and educational symbolism. This study aims to interpret the meaning of the “true teacher” in the wayang play Sang Dwija Agung by Ki Purbo Asmoro as a reflection of Javanese thought. The analysis focuses on Rama Bargawa using Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutic approach, including historical context, pre-understanding, horizon fusion, and the hermeneutic circle. The findings show that Rama Bargawa represents a true teacher who embodies self-awareness, humility (andhap asor), honesty (blakasuta), and wisdom (wicaksana). This meaning emerges through the interpretation of dialogue within its Javanese cultural context and the fusion between text and interpreter horizons. The study confirms that the teacher’s role in Sang Dwija Agung extends beyond teaching to include guiding the ethical use of knowledge. This research offers a new perspective on Rama Bargawa as a true teacher through Gadamerian hermeneutics. In contrast to previous studies that emphasize his role as a conflict-driven figure, this study highlights his exemplary dimension, enriching the understanding of the teacher’s role in wayang studies.

Abstract

The Berat Sengkala tradition is a customary ritual practiced by the community of Lamuk Village, Kaliwiro District, Wonosobo Regency, Central Java, as a form of spiritual endeavor in response to calamities, particularly natural disasters, crop failures, and agricultural pest infestations. This ritual contains a system of symbols that represents the relationship between humans, nature, God, and ancestors; however, its symbolic meanings have not been extensively examined. This study aims to reveal the symbolic meanings embedded in the ritual while also understanding the community's form of spiritual endeavor in confronting calamities through the semiotic perspective of Roland Barthes. This research employed a qualitative approach using an ethnographic method. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with community elders and local residents, and documentation of the ritual process, which were then analyzed using Roland Barthes' concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings indicate that holy water, agricultural produce offerings, and collective prayers form a system of signs representing life, divine protection, ecological awareness, gratitude, social solidarity, and respect for ancestors. At the level of myth, the ritual reinforces the collective belief that maintaining a harmonious relationship among humans, nature, God, and ancestors constitutes a form of spiritual endeavor in dealing with calamities and ensuring the continuity of community life. These calamities include natural disasters such as landslides, crop failures, and attacks by plant pests, including insects, rats, and birds, which can reduce agricultural productivity and ultimately lead to harvest failure, while simultaneously preserving the sustainability of community life.
