Abstract

ChatGPT, a multilingual translation application has made intercultural conversation simpler including local language. However, ChatGPT's translation accuracy should be reviewed due to limits in recognizing domain-specific terms and cultural context. The aim of this study is to find out the translation accuracy of ChatGPT in translating colloquial terms in Dawan language. This study used qualitative method. The participants of this study were from the sixth semester English department students of University of Timor. The data source of this study was the translation result in Dawan into Indonesian language. While, the data of this study are ChatGPT’s translation result obtained from students’ word list from Dawan into Indonesian language. The result of the analysis showed showed that ChatGPT performs relatively well in translating basic vocabulary and common expressions, with 60% of the translations deemed accurate. However, the tool demonstrated significant limitations in handling culturally embedded and context-dependent terms.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana kemampuan menulis artikel ilmiah mahasiswa pada mata kuliah Pragmatik dengan menggunakan model pembelajaran PJbL(Project Based Learning). Adapun metode penelitian yang diguanakan adalah dengan menerapkan metode peneitian tindakan kelas, dimana hasil tulisan dideskripsikan dengan pendekatan kulitatif dan hasil nilai dideskripsikan dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Hasil dari penerapan model pembelajaran PJbl menunjukkan bahwa hasil belajar mahasiswa semakin baik terbukti dnegan nilai rata-rata pada pre test sebesar 69,0 dan hasil pot test 1 72,70 dan hasil post test 2 80,84 dan hasil belajar meningkat. Maka dapat disimpulkan penerapan model pembelajaraN PJbL berhasil meingkatkan kemampuan menulis artikel ilmiah mahasiswa sastra Indonesia pada mata kuliah Pragmatik.

Abstract

AbstractThe COVID-19 era requires the world of education to transform its learning system towards application-based digitalization. The current learning application that is widely discussed is Ruangguru. Ruangguru is an application that is intended to help students learn because the content is based on subjects by the curriculum in Indonesia. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of the Ruangguru application for learning, especially in the scope of elementary schools. This research method is descriptive quantitative through the survey. The population of this study were elementary/MI students in the city of Padangsidimpuan, North Sumatra. The sampling technique used in this study is probability sampling which includes simple random sampling, so the number of students who respond is 81 people. Data collection techniques using a Google Form-assisted questionnaire. Analysis of research data using descriptive statistics assisted by STATCAL software. The results of this study found data that the Ruangguru application seemed to be effectively used for learning for SD/MI students in the Padangsidimpuan City area of North Sumatra Province during the COVID-19 pandemic with an average percentage of 80.25%. Keywords: Ruangguru application; Learning; COVID-19 AbstrakEra COVID-19 menuntut dunia pendidikan bertransformasi sistem pembelajarannya menuju digitalisasi berbasis aplikasi. Aplikasi pembelajaran saat ini yang banyak diperbincangkan ialah Ruangguru. Ruangguru adalah aplikasi yang diperuntukkan membantu siswa dalam belajarnya karena isinya berdasarkan mata pelajaran yang sesuai kurikulum di Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menelusuri keefektifan aplikasi Ruangguru untuk pembelajaran khususnya di lingkup sekolah dasar. Metode penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif deskriptif melalui survei. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa SD/MI yang berada di wilayah Kota Padangsidimpuan, Sumatera Utara. Teknik sampelyang digunakan dalam penelitian ini ialah probability sampling yang meliputi simple random sampling, jadi siswa yang merespon berjumlah 81 orang. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioner berbantuan Google Form. Analisis data penelitian memakai statistik deskriptif berbantuan software STATCAL. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan data bahwa aplikasi Ruangguru terlihat efektif digunakan untuk pembelajaran bagi siswa SD/MI di wilayah Kota Padangsidimpuan Provinsi Sumatera Utara selama masa pandemi  COVID-19 dengan memiliki rata-rata persentase 80,25%. Kata kunci: Aplikasi Ruangguru; Pembelajaran; COVID-19

Abstract

Penelitian ini berfokus untuk mengetahui kesalahan tata bahasa dalam teks terjemahan Bahasa Inggris ke Bahasa Indonesia yang dibuat oleh mahasiswa semester kedua tahun akademik 2024 di jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Timor. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis kesalahan tata bahasa yang dilakukan siswa. Desain deskriptif kualitatif diadopsi dalam penelitian ini. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah teks hasil terjemahan bahasa Inggris-Indonesia. Sedangkan data penelitian ini adalah kesalahan tata bahasa yang diperoleh dari tugas mahasiswa (dokumen), yaitu terjemahan mahasiswa dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 80% kesalahan tata bahasa yang dilakukan siswa meliputi 20% inversi, 30% penambahan, 15% penghilangan, dan 20% penyimpangan.

Abstract

The University of Medan Area has a vision to become a university that can be recognized at the ASEAN Level, for this reason, from now on, the university has begun to prepare the students to have qualified English skills, one of which is by organizing an International Course Program, which is applied to some courses. This program was first implemented in the even semester of the 2023/2024 academic year and received high enthusiasm from the lecturers and participants. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach. Four courses had joined this program, which consisted of 117 participants. The data for this study was gathered using questionnaires filled out by lecturers and students. This study aimed to evaluate the students’ experiential learning in the ICP class, which peeled from the experiential learning phases designed by Wolfe & Byrne in 1975; designing, conducting, evaluating, and giving feedback. The results of this study showed that the international course program had given positive feedback on the pedagogical aspects for the students and the lecturers as well. The students could be involved in new learning experiences, and improve their English language skills, thus for the lecturers, the ICP had given additional insight into teaching methods, and curriculum development.

Abstract

Interlanguage is a transitional stage in language learning, where a person’s language ability moves from their first language (mother tongue) toward the other language. It is important to note that interlanguage is distinct from the mother tongue and the second/foreign language. This study examines the translation errors made by students when translating from Bahasa Indonesia to English during their interlanguage stage. The study aims to investigate (1) how students translate at this stage, (2) the types of errors they make, and (3) the most frequent errors. Using descriptive qualitative and content analysis methods, ten seventh-grade junior high school students participated in this study whose mother tongue is Bahasa Indonesia, and English is a foreign language/target language. For the instrument, this study uses an individual sentence translation test. The students were instructed to translate four unrelated sentences each, with a time limit of one minute per sentence. The researcher uses sources of error theory from Richard and Lott. The findings indicate that (1) most students tend to transfer the rules of their mother tongue into English. (2) Out of 40 sentences, it found 18 contained errors, leading to 26 mistakes: 8 interference errors (7.7% transfer of structure, 23% interlingual), and 18 intralingual errors (11.5% incomplete application of rules, 30.8% false concept hypothesized, and 27% overgeneralization). Meanwhile, (3) the most frequent error is false concept hypothesized, followed by overgeneralization, interlingual errors, incomplete application of rules, and transfer of structure errors.

Abstract

The aim this research was to get the information about the effect of Visualization straregy on the students reading comprehension who were from SMA Swasta Nurcahaya Medan at school year 2022/2023. Quantitative method was applied in carrying out this research. After carrying out the research, the writer got research findings. Visualization strategy has given significant impact on the students’ reading comprehension. From the research result, it was known that the implementation of Visualization Strategy is more effective than conventional teaching strategy in teaching reading comprehension. The writer did the pre-test. From the pre-test it can be seen that 66.90 were the mean scores of the students who came from control class. The writer did the post-test to the students who were control class. The mean scores of the students were 74.28. Meanwhile, the writer also got the data from the experimental class. After doing pre-test in the experimental class, it can be seen that the mean scores of the students were 67.57. After doing the post-test, it can be seen that the mean scores of the students were 85.81. The writer compared the mean scores of the students who were from the control class and the experimental class. The mean scores were compared after doing the pre-test and the post-test. From the result of the post-tests, the writer could make conclusions. The students’ mean scores from the experimental class were higher than the students’ mean scores from the controlc class (85.81>74.28). The difference of mean scores were 11.53. The writer implemented t-test in carrying out this research. After doing the test. it was known that t-observed value was 5.67. After seeing the result, t-test (5.67) was higher than the t-table (1.675) (p = 0.05 and df = 56). By seeing this data, the writer concluded that Visualization Strategy significanlty affected the reading comprehension of the students who were from SMA Swasta Nurcahaya Medan. Abstract

This research aimed to identify persona deixis in the short film entitled "Aku dan Mesin Waktu. Deixis is words that take meaning from the speech situation, whether in the form of person, time or place) when the words are used. The method in this research used a qualitative descriptive approach. The data collection technique in this research used the listening and note-taking technique, while the data analysis technique in this research used data transcription procedures, data classification, data analysis and drawing conclusions. The results of this research found first person deixis (Aku/-ku, me, me, I and kita), second person deixis (Kamu/-mu, lo, and Mereka), third person deixis (Dia, Nya, and Mereka). ). The most dominant person deixis is first person deixis.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the tact maxim in the event of Marhata sinamot of Batak Toba tradition that reviewed its function namely assertive, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative. This research used a qualitative descriptive approach; the data collection technique involved interviewing and recording, while the analysis data was described, and conclusions were made. The result showed that the tact maxim is one of the principles of politeness whose form of speech prioritizes the benefits of others and reduces/maximizes one's own benefits. From the results obtained, there are (2) assertive utterances, (10) directive utterances, (1) commissive utterances, (3) expressive utterances, and (1) declarative utterances. The dominant tact maxim based on its function was found in the directive speech act.
