Abstract

This research study analyzes the politeness strategies employed by the characters in the animated movie Onward and explores the factors that influence their choices. By utilizing the theories of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson, the data obtained in this qualitative research is examined. The research employs observation and note-taking techniques, using video recordings of the movie, transcriptions of the characters' utterances, and tables or data sheets as the primary tools for data collection. The findings reveal that the characters utilize four main types of politeness strategies, including bald on-record, off-record, and negative politeness, with positive politeness emerging as the dominant approach. This means that the characters prioritize maintaining social harmony in their interactions. Additionally, the factors influencing the choice of politeness strategies relevance, circumstances, and payoff were identified, with payoff indicating the primary factors that the characters aim to maximize the benefits of their conversations. Furthermore, the characters' linguistic choices were found to be influenced by the socio-cultural aspects of their society.

Abstract

This research aimed to help students at SMP Negeri 19 Pontianak improve their speaking skills by applying Cooper’s Modified Think Pair Share Technique, the latest modification of the original Think Pair Share Technique, emphasizing student-centered learning. The focus of improving speaking skills was on procedural text material related to water-saving. Students created texts on four randomly assigned topics, which included washing dishes, washing vehicles, washing clothes, and watering plants. The research employed a classroom action research method with 32 students from class 8D at SMP Negeri 19 Pontianak as the participants. The researcher collected data using observation sheets, field notes, and oral assessments. The study was conducted over two cycles. In Cycle I, students had an average score of 66.44, which increased to 71.72 in Cycle II, exceeding the Learning Objective Accomplishment Criteria (KKTP) of 71. Abstract

Parental support is an essential factor contributing to children's acquisition process. This study aimed to investigate the action of parental support in children's English vocabulary acquisition. This study was designed as a descriptive qualitative study. Five parents from different educational backgrounds and professions and five-year-old young learners were chosen as participants in this study. Interviews and observation were employed to obtain the data. The data was collected through one-on-one semi-structured interviews and field notes. The data collected was then analyzed using five steps of qualitative data analysis proposed by Creswell and Creswell. The results showed four parental actions to support children's English vocabulary acquisition. Parents from different educational backgrounds and professions provided various ways to be involved in their children's English vocabulary acquisition. They were motivating the children to learn English, providing media exposure, monitoring the children using digital media, and assisting the children at home. It is proven that parents can support their children in acquiring English vocabulary in a variety of ways; therefore, it is suggested that all parents who have young learners support their children's English acquisition process.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigated how the "Brainstorming of Recognizes Stages in a Group" method encouraged students’ motivation to speak English, focusing on both intrinsic and extrinsic aspects. Conducted through Classroom Action Research (CAR) in two cycles at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak, the study involved 35 eleventh-grade students. Data were gathered using field notes, questionnaires, and observation sheets. The average motivation score improved from 2.8 (unmotivated) in the first cycle to 3.23 (moderate motivation) in the second cycle, indicating a 44.39% increase. Students who were initially passive and afraid of making mistakes became more active, confident, and engaged in expressing their ideas. The method also promoted respect and collaboration among students in group discussions. These findings indicate that the Brainstorming of Recognizes Stages in a Group effectively enhances students’ motivation to speak English

Abstract

Postoperative pain is a significant health concern affecting approximately 35–65% of surgical patients. When left unmanaged, this type of pain can lead to complications such as bleeding, infection, respiratory distress, and a decline in overall quality of life. This study aimed to explore the application of guided imagery techniques using Virtual Reality (VR) as a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce pain intensity in postoperative patients. The research employed an experimental approach involving a single patient experiencing acute pain after surgery. The intervention was carried out on February 1, 2025, and lasted for 10 minutes. Findings indicated a significant reduction in pain intensity following the implementation of guided imagery through VR. Post-intervention evaluations showed that the patient met the outcome indicators outlined in the Indonesian Nursing Outcome Standards (SLKI), including decreased pain complaints, reduced grimacing, diminished protective behavior, decreased restlessness, less self-focus, as well as lower respiratory rate, pulse rate, and blood pressure. Based on these findings, it is recommended that nurses consider incorporating guided imagery using virtual reality as a complementary intervention in pain management to improve comfort and quality of life in postoperative care.
