Abstract

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are a significant public health problem, especially in tropical and subtropical countries with limited sanitation. Transmission occurs through soil contaminated with the feces of infected individuals, which contain helminth eggs such as Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm) and Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), as well as hookworm larvae. This study aims to analyze the relationship between STH infection and hematological status (reticulocyte count and hemoglobin level) and Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) in vulnerable elementary school students. Using a cross-sectional design, the study involved 44 students at SDN Sobontoro 2. The results showed that 23% of students (10 children) tested positive for STH infection. Statistical analysis using the Spearman test found no significant correlation between STH infection and reticulocyte count (p=0.072) or hemoglobin level (p=0.124). However, a very significant relationship was found between STH infection and PHBS (p=0.000). These findings underline that poor PHBS practices are a major risk factor that directly contributes to high rates of STH infections.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a degenerative disease that has many complications, one of which is diabetic ulcers. People with diabetes mellitus who have open wounds will be more susceptible to infection because an increase in blood sugar can make the wound a nutrient and a place for bacterial growth. One of the bacteria that causes infection in open wounds is Staphylococcus aureus. Toxins released by Staphylococcus aureus can cause Staphylococcal Scaled Skin (SSS). This quantitative descriptive study was conducted at the Diabetes Wound Specialist House, involving patients with diabetes mellitus at the Diabetes Wound Specialist Hospital. Bacterial culture from patient wound swabs was carried out at the Microbiology Laboratory, Poltekkes Kemenkes Surabaya; while the detection of the Staphylococcus aureus EtA gene was carried out at the ITD (Institute of Tropical Diseases) Laboratory. Data were analyzed descriptively. The PCR results showed that from 30 samples of diabetes mellitus wound swabs, 2 samples were found positive for the presence of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Abstract

Corticosteroid inhaler is one of the first-line drugs given for the control and prevention of asthma attacks in the long term and continuously. The use of corticosteroid inhalers for a long time has systemic side effects in the oral cavity which can be a predisposing factor for normal fungal infection of Candida albicans microflora, an increase of Candida albicans’s amount in the oral cavity can cause oral candidiasis. Candida albicans detection using q-PCR to detect specific genes in oral swab specimens can provide an indirect picture of the amount of Candida albicans in the samples taken. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the length of use of corticosteroid inhalers and the cycle threshold value in oral swab samples of asthma patient. This type of research is correlational research with data collection techniques using a purposive sampling technique on 30 respondents at the Lung Polyclinic at Bhayangkara Hospital H.S Samsoeri Mertojoso Surabaya who fit the inclusion criteria. Samples were examined using q-PCR to detect specific genes in the ITS-2 region to detect Candida albicans. This research was conducted at the Molecular Biology Laboratory of theMinistry of Health Surabaya Polytechnic during the period April – May 2023. The results showed that there were 26 samples(86.7%) positive for the ITS-2 gene and 4 samples (13.3%) negative for the ITS-2 gene. with sig. 0.307 so that it can be concluded that there is no relationship between the length of use of corticosteroid inhalers and the cycle threshold value of C. albicans in asthmatic’s oral swab sample.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Sepsis neonatorum is one of the biggest triggers of neonatal deaths in Indonesia. The Diagnosis of sepsis is difficult to establish due to non-specific symptoms, so accurate, affordable, and easily accessible biomarkers are needed. Commonly used biomarkers such as C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and Procalcitonin (PCT) have limited cost and availability. Neutrophil lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) is a promising alternative because it can be obtained from a routine complete blood count. The study intends to determine the correlation between the value of NLR and CRP in children indicated sepsis in RSUD dr. Sayidiman Magetan. The study was classified as cross sectional based analytical observational in 33 pediatric patients suspected of sepsis during October 2024 to March 2025. Spearman correlation testing is used in the data analysis of this study because the distribution of data is not normal based on the Shapiro-Wilk test. The average value of NLR was 6.72% and CRP was 70.16 mg/L. Spearman correlation test results showed a moderate correlation between NLR and CRP with a correlation coefficient of 0.407 (p = 0.019). There is a significant moderate correlation between NLR and CRP in pediatric patients with suspected sepsis, so NLR can potentially be used as an alternative inflammatory marker to detect pediatric sepsis.

Abstract

Pneumonia is a pulmonary infection that may result in moderate to severe sickness across all age groups. The predominant microorganisms responsible for pneumonia are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Legionella species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter species. Klebsiella pneumoniae is the bacterium most often responsible for pneumonia relative to other bacteria. This research is to assess the susceptibility of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from the sputum of patients suspected of pneumonia to the medication Ciprofloxacin. Sputum samples were collected from patients suspected of pneumonia between May and June 2024 at the Syarifah Ambami Rato Ebu Bangkalan Madura District Hospital, with further analysis conducted at the Surabaya Public Health Laboratory Center. The used methodology is sputum cultivation using aerobic techniques. The study used was a descriptive survey, determined by simple random sampling of 30 samples. The test findings indicated that 1 out of 30 samples (3.3%) exhibited Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria, generating an inhibition zone of 32 mm, classified as sensitive according to CLSI recommendations. This study recommends that future studies use Klebsiella pneumoniae isolate samples from the sputum of probable pneumonia patients aged 2 to 64 years.

Abstract

Brazilein is one of the secondary sappan wood metabolites which can be used empirically as an antivirus. The SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) glycoproteins play significant roles in attaching and entering the virus into the host cell. This study aims to predict the antiviral activity and pharmacokinetic properties of brazilein of the sappan wood against the in-silico SARS-CoV-2 S glycoproteins with vitamin C as the reference compound. Molegro Virtual Docker 5.5 was used to predict antiviral activity by docking process. SARS-CoV-2 S glycoprotein with NAG ligand available in Protein Data Bank (PDB) (PDB ID: 7C01) was the receptor used. The pkCSM online tool was used to predict the pharmacokinetic properties and toxicity of brazilein. Data were analyzed on the target receptors by comparing the docking bond energies between NAG, brazilein, and vitamin C. The smaller the ligands’ bond energy to the target receptor, the more stable the bonds are. The bond energy of NAG, brazilein, and vitamin C was -59.2864 kcal/mol, -65.8911 kcal/mol, and -53.9093 kcal/mol, respectively. These results suggested that brazilein has a greater capacity as an antivirus compared to NAG and vitamin C. In silico test using the pkCSM online tool demonstrated that brazilein had strong pharmacokinetic properties and relatively low toxicity.
