Abstract

The spread of COVID-19 is still very high in Indonesia, especially in Eastern Indonesia. Inadequate facilities and the presence of health workers are still the toughest challenges in dealing with the spread of this virus. Real actions of concern at the Orphanage were carried out by educating on health protocols to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic from spreading to the residents of the Orphanage. There were 28 health protocol education participants consisting of 24 girls and 4 caregivers at the Muhammadiyah Al-Amin Orphanage Sorong. Abstract

The waste problem is endless, especially non-organic waste. Garbage that has been collected and not managed properly can cause big problems. Raam Island is one of the areas in the city of Sorong that is constrained by waste problems. Many non-organic wastes cannot be resolved. It is a challenge for academics to be able to help solve. In this activity, one of the efforts made was the socialization of the existence of a method that can be applied to reduce non-organic waste. One of them is the introduction of 3D printer products processed from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) non-organic plastic waste. Plastic non-organic waste of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is waste produced from drink bottles, such as mineral water bottles. Knowledge of non-organic waste processing techniques needs teaching from an early age. Therefore, socialization activities are carried out starting from the elementary school level. This activity resulted in the additional insight that there is a new method for processing non-organic plastic waste, especially the type of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) often used in everyday life. Based on survey results, data was generated that this activity was very beneficial for the surrounding community. It is hoped that after this activity, the surrounding community can start not directly disposing of drink bottle waste but could collect it and then process it into useful products.

Abstract

Abstract

Gender empowerment is a key aspect of Indonesia’s national development, highlighted by Presidential Instruction No. 9 of 2000 which advocates gender mainstreaming in all life sectors. The instruction’s goal is to ensure equal participation and benefit-sharing between women and men in various fields including politics, economy, culture, and security. This study evaluates gender empowerment in West Papua’s mangrove ecosystem communities, focusing on productive and reproductive roles, as well as resource access and control. Conducted in Sorong City, Sorong Regency and South Sorong Regency, this research involved 140 respondents who were active in production and household activities related to the mangrove ecosystem. The Harvard model was used for analyzing gender roles in production and reproduction, identifying activity profiles, and access and control factors. Findings reveal a gender division in activities: reproductive tasks are mainly performed by women (50.31%), while productive tasks are predominantly men’s domain (62.94%). Men also largely control resources, with 70.54% access and 64.74% control. The study also correlates household characteristics with gender empowerment, noting reproductive activities’ impact (36.32%) and productive activities’ influence (22.54%). Focus group discussions corroborated questionnaire results, underscoring the need for government intervention. This intervention should include fisheries extension services providing information access, empowering women through economic and social skill enhancement, and ensuring their equal role in decision-making. The study also highlights the importance of educational access, advocating for awareness of its benefits and the establishment of schools near coastal communities. This approach aims to balance gender roles and participation in both economic and social activities.
