Abstract

Background: Wound care can involve both chemical and natural substances to accelerate the healing process. Aloe vera is known for its wound-healing properties due to the presence of saponins. Similarly, sambung nyawa leaves aid in wound healing because they contain flavonoids. Combining extracts from aloe vera and sambung nyawa is expected to enhance the healing process. Gel formulations are advantageous as they allow for prolonged drug contact with the wound and protect it from external contamination. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of varying concentrations of Carbopol 940 as a gelling agent on the physical properties and stability of the gel, as well as to assess the effectiveness of the gel in promoting the healing of excision wounds.Methodology: The method used in this study is experimental. The gel formulations consist of four formulas with varying concentrations of sambung nyawa leaf extract and Carbopol. Evaluation of the gel's physical properties includes organoleptic tests, homogeneity, spreadability, adhesiveness, pH, viscosity, and stability tests. The excision wound healing test was conducted on mice using six treatment groups. The observed parameter was the percentage of wound healing. Data analysis was performed descriptively and statistically using One-Way ANOVA.Results: The evaluation results of the formulation showed that the developed formula met the standards for physical properties and stability. The best wound-healing effectiveness was observed in treatment group 4, which contained 4% ethanol extract of aloe vera, 5% sambung nyawa leaves, and 2% Carbopol 940.Conclusion: The variation in Carbopol 940 concentration affects the physical properties and stability of the gel formulation. The effectiveness of excision wound healing indicates that higher concentrations of sambung nyawa leaf extract result in better wound-healing efficacy.

Abstract

The essential oil of Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) has antioxidant activity and can be used as an active compound in sunscreen preparations. The index used to describe the effectiveness of sunscreen products is the Sun Protection Factor (SPF). Patchouli oil has never been developed as a sunscreen in gel dosage form. The exploration of patchouli oil is more about testing antioxidant and antibacterial activity. This research aims to optimize the formula and test the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value of essential oil of Pogostemon cablin gel preparations. Formula optimization using Simplex Lattice Design 13 contained in Design Expert software. The variables optimized in this study were carbopol and triethanolamine concentrations. The responses used in the optimization process are pH, viscosity, adhesion, and spreadability. The optimum formula was evaluated by evaluating the preparation, including organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, adhesive power, spreadability, stability, and SPF value test using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The results showed that the optimum formula composition was obtained from a combination of 0.5% carbopol and 0.7% triethanolamine. The optimum formula gel preparation has a yellow appearance and smell typical of patchouli oil, homogeneous, the pH of the preparation is 6.29 ± 0.08, the viscosity of the preparation is 44086.67 ± 1510.69, the adhesive power is 7.62 ± 0.68, the spreadability of 5.42 ± 0.08, stable. Abstract

Rhaphidophora pinnata leaves are one of the herbal plants that have pharmacological effects. Previous research has shown that ekor naga leaves contain secondary metabolites with tonic pharmacological effects, including the ability to heal cut wounds, as well as antihyperglycemic and antidiabetic properties. This research aims to demonstrate the potential of ekor naga leaf extract as a gastroprotective agent. The extract was evaluated using standard methods, including determination of water content, ash content, phytochemical screening, and compound identification by LC-MS. Gastroprotective testing was carried out by dividing the treatment group into six groups, including the Group 1: normal group, Group 2: negative control (Sodium CMC 0.5%), Group 3: positive control (Sucralfate), Group 4: 125mg/KgBW extract, Group 5: 250 mg/KgBW extract, and Group 6: 500mg/KgBW extract. The results of the observations were in the form of gastric ulcer severity scores and histological images of the gastric organs. Gastroprotective testing revealed significant differences between the treatment groups and the negative control group (p<0.05). The 500 mg/kgBW extract exhibited the most effective gastroprotective effect, with a 42.5% inhibition rate and minimal inflammation observed both macroscopically and microscopically. These results suggest that ethanol extract from ekor naga leaves may serve as an alternative or complementary therapy for gastritis.
