Abstract

This study aims to determine the heavy metal content and vitamin E concentration of male Wistar rat testes exposed to Sarimukti landfill leachate. The research design used was a randomized block design. Rats were divided into four treatments, namely: aquabidestylates, 63% leachate, CdCl2, H2O2. The test substance was administered intraperitoneally for 14 days. Heavy metal concentrations were measured using the Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) method, while Vitamin E concentrations were measured using HPLC. The results showed that the concentration of heavy metal Zn in testicular tissue exposed to 63% leachate was 0.6 ppm, aquabidestylates was 0.5 ppm, while the other six metals had a concentration of 0 ppm. The measurement results of Vitamin E in the 63% leachate treatment were meager, namely, 1.06 ppm when compared to the aquabidestyl treatment of 7.92 ppm, CdCl2 and H2O2 were 0.53 ppm and 0.85 ppm, respectively. In conclusion, Sarimukti landfill leachate can cause an increase in ROS, which is indicated by a biomarker of decreased Vitamin E concentration in the testes, causing testicular damage. Abstract

Coffee extracts are a rich source of potential compounds with numerous biological activities. This study aimed to investigate the potential of chemical compounds derived from robusta coffee extract (Coffea canephora) and its dominant compound, caffeine, to scavenge free radicals, inhibit bacterial growth and biofilm formation, and cytotoxic properties in human breast adenocarcinoma cell line. Chemical constituents of coffee extract were analysed quantitively for total phenolic, flavonoid, and alkaloid contents, along with Liquid Chromatography Quadrupole-Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS–MS) analysis. Antioxidant activity was measured by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis; 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) methods. Antibacterial pair with antibiofilm properties against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus were also determined, as well as cytotoxic activity on the MCF7 cell line model. The LC/MS–MS analysis of coffee extracts revealed high levels of caffeine; thus, the caffeine standard is used in all subsequent assays. Notably, robusta coffee extract showed remarkable antioxidant activity and selective inhibition of the growth against gram-positive and negative bacteria, along with the best inhibition of P. aeruginosa biofilm. However, compared with the caffeine standard, robusta coffee extract had lower cytotoxic activity and different bacterial targets in antibacterial and antibiofilm properties. Our results indicate that Robusta coffee extract is potentially a functional food due to its high alkaloid, phenolic, and flavonoid content and antioxidant activity, besides being used for natural compounds against bacterial infections.

Abstract

Reproductive health is one of the knowledge that is still taboo in society. In fact, it is very important for reproductive development. In adolescents, physical, mental, and social changes must be balanced with good and correct knowledge. Thus, a healthy and quality generation can be created. Way Dadi Village, is one of the villages located in Sukarame District, Bandar Lampung City with a fairly high number of teenagers and adults. This Community Service (PKM) aims to provide knowledge to the public about the importance of reproductive health in maintaining the quality of generations and provide knowledge about the importance of knowing the potential of Medicinal Plants (TOGA) which can be used as prevention of reproductive diseases. This PKM is carried out with a face-to-face method in accordance with health protocols. The PKM method is carried out by evaluating the pre-instruction and post-instruction research questionnaires. Filling in is based on the weighting of understanding starting from not, enough, moderate, good, and very good. Thus, the final post-exam results are obtained with a very good average understanding of up to 86%.

Abstract

Infertility is currently an important problem in the world, including in Indonesia. Infertility can occur in men and women. Inmen, factors causing infertility can come from external sources. One environmental factor that can cause infertility is exposureto heavy metals from the environment. One way to prevent and treat infertility includes consuming natural antioxidants derivedfrom plants. One plant that has antioxidant compounds and has antioxidant activity is the kabau plant. This research wasconducted to test the effect of kabau seed pod extract (Archidendron jiringoides Komariah) on male mice exposed to Pb metalto determine its effect on the concentration of spermatozoa in male mice. The methods used in this research include:preparation of test animals, making simplicia and kabau seed pod extract, exposing the extract to test animals, isolatingorgans, and making spermatozoa suspensions. Giving kabau seed pod extract to mice that had previously been exposed tolead (Pb) increased the concentration of mice spermatozoa with the most effective dose of kabau bark extract, namely 190mg/kg BW. However, statistical analysis shows that the increase is not significant.

Abstract

Leachate is a pollutant produced by landfills which can pollute the aquatic environment. This will have an impact on fish that live in waters contaminated with leachate and if consumed by the public it will harm health. The toxic effects of leachate are caused by the content of toxic chemicals, one of which is heavy metals. The aim of this research was to determine the concentrations of Fe, Cu, Zn and Pb in Bakung landfill leachate, Sukamaju river water and fish meat. Bakung landfill leachate samples were taken from two outlet points. The fish sampling location was carried out in the Sukamaju River. The physical factors of water measured are temperature, pH, salinity, turbidity, DO, COD and BOD. Fe, Cu, Zn and Pb concentrations were measured using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) method. The results show that the physicochemical parameters in leachate and river water exceed the threshold. The contents of Zn, Cu, Fe and Pb in the leachate at both outlet points exceeded the threshold value with values of 2.48 mg/L and 2.80 mg/L; 16.55 mg/L and 17 mg/L; 0.078 mg/L and 0.113 mg/L; 3.26 mg/L and 3.01 mg/L. The concentration of heavy metals Pb and Fe in river water is 0.083-0.162 mg/L and 2.68-2.97 mg/L which are above the quality standard value, while the heavy metal Fe content in fish meat exceeds the specified threshold value, namely 0.557 mg/100 g and 0.564 mg/100 g.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Pandemi global mengharuskan masyarakat untuk memberikan perhatian lebih terhadap peningkatan daya tahan tubuh agar tidak mudah terpapar berbagai penyakit terutama Covid-19. Ada banyak cara yang dapat dilakukan untuk meningkatkan imunitas tubuh, salah satunya dengan mengkonsumsi makanan dari produk alami bebas bahan kimia berbahaya yang mengandung nutrisi seimbang. Salah satu produk alami yang dapat meningkatkan daya tahan tubuh adalah madu. Madu merupakan salah satu produk alami lebah yang dapat langsung dikonsumsi dan berkhasiat untuk kesehatan. Lebah yang umumnya dipelihara untuk menghasilkan madu adalah jenis lebah madu Apis sp. yang memiliki sengat. Hal ini yang menyebabkan madu hanya bisa diperoleh dari peternak lebah dan distributor madu. Namun, jenis lebah liar tanpa sengat dapat mempermudah masyarakat untuk memperoleh madu dan dapat dipelihara langsung dari rumah. Pengetahuan pemeliharaan lebah madu dapat membantu masyarakat untuk memastikan tersedianya asupan nutrisi yang dapat menjaga daya tahan tubuh keluarga. Pelaksanaan pelatihan pemeliharaan lebah tanpa sengat dilaksanakan dengan metoda ceramah di Desa Bumisari, Natar, Lampung Selatan. Tahapan pelaksanaan kegiatan ini meliputi pengisian kuesioner pre-test dan post-test untuk mengetahui pengetahuan masyarakat sebelum dan sesudah dilakasanakan pelatihan. Ketercapaian target diketahui dapat berdasarkan hasil analisis kuesioner yang dilakukan, dimana ditemukan peningkatan pemahaman masyarakat hingga 87.096%. Berdasarkan hasil akhir kegiatan, diharapkan masyarakat semakin baik mengelola lingkungan sekitar sehingga sumber tanaman penghasil nektar untuk madu lebah tanpa sengat tetap terus tersedia. There are many things that can be done to increase the body's immunity, one of which is by consuming foods derived from natural products that free of harmful chemicals and contain a balanced of nutrients. Honey is one of the natural bee products that can be consumed right away and is good for human health. Apis spp., is the common insect species of bees with sting, are typically kept to generate honey. Because of this, good quality honey is only available from professional beekeepers and honey suppliers. However, wild stingless bees can help people to obtain honey and can be kept at home. Knowledge of honey bee maintenance can help the community to ensure the availability of nutritional intake that can maintain the family's immune system. The implementation of stingless beekeeping training was carried out using the lecture method in Bumisari Village, Natar, South Lampung. The stages of implementing this activity include filling out pre-test and post-test questionnaires to determine community knowledge before and after the training. The achievement of the target can be known based on the results of the questionnaire analysis conducted, which found an increase in public understanding of up to 87.096%. Based on the final results of the activity, it is hoped that the community will better manage the surrounding environment so that sources of nectar-producing plants for stingless bee honey will continue to be available. Abstract

Cadmium (Cd) increases oxidative stress, which increases the likelihood of health problems. To protect the body from oxidative stress, natural antioxidants obtained from plants are required. The kabau plant (Archidendron bubalinum) is thought to have antioxidant phytochemicals. The purpose of this study was to assess the antioxidant activity and total phenolic component content of kabau pod peels, as well as their effect on the quantity of erythrocytes and leukocytes in male mice exposed to cadmium. This study used a completely randomized design, with 24 mice divided into six groups: three control groups and three treatment groups. The findings of assessing the antioxidant activity of peel extract revealed that the IC50 was 93.6 ppm, which is considered strong. The phenolic content of peel extract was 72.26 mg GAE/g. Giving pod peel extract to mice increased the number of erythrocytes and leukocytes, however the impact was not significant (p = 0.028 and P = 0.239). Mice with 380 mg/kg BW produced better outcomes. Abstract

Etnobiologi adalah evaluasi ilmiah terhadap pengetahuan penduduk tentang biologi, meliputi pengetahuan tentang tumbuhan (etnobotani), hewan (etnozoologi) dan lingkungannya (etnoekologi). Kajian etnobiologi dapat menghubungkan biologi dan etnis yang ada pada suatu tradisi adat. Melalui kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat, mendorong masyarakat untuk peduli terhadap pelestarian sumber daya alam yang ada di Desa Pahawang. Hasil akhir dari pelaksanaan kegiatan adalah pengetahuan masyarakat tentang pemanfaatan etnobotani dan etnozoologi yang ada di desa Pahawang. Kami melakukan penilaian terhadap pengetahuan dan ketertarikan masyarakat mengenai pemanfaatan etnobotani dan etnozoologi yang ada dan diterapkan di desa Pahawang. Pengetahuan masyarakat mengenai potensi dan pemanfaatan etnobotani dan etnozoologi di desa Pahawang meningkat setelah pelatihan jika dibandingkan dengan sebelum pelatihan. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari ketercapaian tujuan dari kegiatan dari hasil pengolahan data kuesioner. Rerata ketercapaian tujuan dapat dikatakan baik (75,6%) berdasarkan dari hasil pre-test dan post-test, dimana terdapat peningkatan pengetahuan dari ibu-ibu peserta kegiatan sebesar dari awal hingga akhir kegiatan. Kemampuan melakukan budidaya tanaman pangan, dan pengetahuan tentang pengobatan alami merupakan potensi besar untuk dikembangkan demi meningkatkan ketahanan pangan dan kesehatan yang lebih baik bagi masyarakat Desa Pahawang ke depan.

Abstract

Stunting merupakan permasalahan kesehatan serius yang berdampak jangka panjang terhadap kualitas sumber daya manusia, terutama di daerah pedesaan. Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman kader PKK dan Posyandu mengenai pencegahan stunting melalui edukasi gizi seimbang dan pengolahan makanan bergizi sederhana berbahan lokal. Metode yang digunakan adalah sosialisasi interaktif. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan pada 18 Desember 2024 di Desa Bumisari, Kecamatan Natar, Kabupaten Lampung Selatan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman peserta terkait gizi seimbang dan praktik pencegahan stunting. Para kader berkomitmen untuk menyebarkan informasi ini ke masyarakat lebih luas. Pendampingan berkelanjutan diharapkan dapat menjadikan Desa Bumisari sebagai percontohan desa bebas stunting.

Abstract

Several compounds that can boost immune activity (immunostimulatory) include vitamin E, curcumin, flavonoids, and vitamin C. In this study, ascorbic acid or vitamin C, was used as one method to enhance the immune system. This study aims to determine the immunostimulatory effect of vitamin C on the phagocytosis activity of macrophages in mice induced by Staphylococcus aureus. The mice were divided into two groups: the control group, which received 0.3 ml of distilled water orally, and the treatment group, which received 0.036 mg/g BW of vitamin C orally for 14 days. On the 15th day, each mouse was intraperitoneally induced with 0.5 mL of Staphylococcus aureus bacterial suspension and left for two hours. The phagocytic activity value represents the percentage of active macrophage cells among all macrophages observed. The result showed that the value of % phagocytic activity in the control group was 21.43% ± 7.92, whereas the % phagocytic activity in the treatment group was 48.31% ± 22.27. The group of mice given vitamin C 0.036 mg/g BW orally showed increased phagocytic activity compared to the control group mice. This shows that vitamin C has potential as an immunostimulator.
