Abstract

The research is motivated by the need to gain a deeper understanding of students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities, particularly in algebra, and to identify and address the productive struggles the encounter while solving problems. This research aims to analyze students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in solving algebra problems and identify students' productive struggles in solving these problems. This research was carried out using a qualitative approach with descriptive methods and instruments used in this research are problem solving ability tests, questionnaires that have been validated by education experts, and interview guides. Researchers selected students based on their level of productive struggle, namely high, medium, and low. The result revealed that students who have high productive struggle can answer the three questions correctly according to the problem-solving stages, starting from the understanding stage, transformation stage, process skills stage, and conclusion stage. Students who have moderate productive fighting power can answer the three questions only up to the understanding and transformation stage. At the process skills stage, students show errors in calculating and need teacher motivation to continue their struggle in solving mathematical problems. Students who have low productive fighting power can answer questions only up to the understanding stage, limited to writing back what they know and ask. In this category, students need intervention assistance from researchers to encourage their productive struggles. This assistance does not eliminate students' opportunities to think actively, on the contrary, through this method students are required to interpret their knowledge.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by sequential picture media in improving narrative writing skills among fourth-grade elementary school students. The primary issue identified was students' difficulty in developing ideas, structuring narrative compositions, and using correct spelling. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, involving two cycles of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through classroom observations, writing skill tests, interviews with students and teachers, and documentation of student work. The findings indicated a significant improvement in students' writing skills, with 65% achieving Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKTP) in Cycle 1, increasing to 88% in Cycle 2. Sequential picture media provided effective visual support to help students structure narratives, while the PBL model enhanced student engagement and critical thinking. Despite the progress, 12% of students did not meet KKTP, indicating a need for additional intervention. Overall, the combination of PBL and sequential picture media proved effective in improving narrative writing skills among students.

Abstract

This study addresses the persistent challenge of limited procedural understanding in multiplication among elementary school students in Indonesia, particularly those in Phase B. Many students struggle to follow correct steps, select appropriate strategies, and apply multiplication concepts to real-life contexts—issues often exacerbated by traditional teaching methods that prioritize rote memorization over active, tangible learning experiences. The study aims to examine the effectiveness of the GASING method in enhancing procedural understanding of multiplication among fourth-grade students. Employing a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, the study involved 24 purposively selected students. Data were collected using pre- and post-test instruments and analyzed through the Wilcoxon test. Results indicate a significant improvement in students' procedural understanding following the intervention, with a p-value of 0.001, demonstrating statistical significance at the 0.05 level. The findings affirm that the GASING method—characterized by its concrete, visual, and interactive learning approach—effectively strengthens students’ procedural skills in mathematics. This research contributes to the growing literature on innovative teaching methods in mathematics education and provides practical guidance for educators seeking to implement engaging, structured instructional strategies.

Abstract

Challenges such as limited facilities, insufficient professional training, and resistance to pedagogical innovation hinder the effective implementation of advanced learning approaches in elementary education. This study aims to analyze how the deep learning approach is implemented in mathematics instruction at the elementary school level. A qualitative research design with a case study method was employed. Participants included 29 elementary school teachers—9 from Pagerwangi I Public Elementary School and 20 from Madrasah Ibtidaiyyah Al-Haq, West Java—selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an observation instrument designed to assess the implementation of deep learning practices. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, involving data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the average teacher competency score in implementing the deep learning approach was 78.06%, categorized as "good." The implementation was structured around three key stages: initial, core, and closing activities. Initial activities focused on student readiness, motivation, and contextual connections. Core activities emphasized conceptual understanding, application, and the development of higher-order thinking skills. Closing activities involved reflection, feedback, assessment, and planning for subsequent learning. The study concludes that teachers demonstrated a solid alignment between deep learning principles and instructional practice. However, achieving optimal implementation requires further development of teachers’ conceptual understanding and emotional and social readiness. Enhancing these areas is essential for sustaining meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning experiences in mathematics education at the elementary level. Future professional development programs should address these dimensions to support continued pedagogical transformation.
