Abstract

The erosion of environmental awareness and the diminishing recognition of traditional knowledge present significant challenges for contemporary education, particularly in Indonesia. This literature review examines the integration of ethnoscience into science education as a strategic response to these issues. Studies conducted between 2020 and 2025 reveal a growing emphasis on embedding local wisdom—such as indigenous agricultural practices and cultural rituals—into science curricula to enhance environmental consciousness and promote sustainable behaviors. A majority of the research focused on students, with senior high school (40%) and junior high school (26.7%) populations being the primary targets. Notably, research output surged in 2024, reflecting increasing academic interest. Ethnoscience-based instructional materials, including e-modules and interactive books, were widely implemented and demonstrated effectiveness in facilitating conceptual understanding while nurturing cultural appreciation. These tools were well-received by both educators and learners. Geographically, the studies spanned diverse regions, including Papua, Surabaya, and Ponorogo, underscoring the broad applicability of ethnoscience in Indonesian education. Although fewer studies concentrated on teachers, findings suggest that incorporating traditional knowledge into science education fosters cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development. This approach not only enriches the curriculum but also provides learners with a meaningful, context-driven educational experience rooted in both scientific inquiry and cultural heritage..Keywords: ethnoscience, environmental education, indonesia, systematic literature review, science learning

Abstract

Metacognitive regulation skills are crucial in addressing increasingly complex global challenges. These skills enable individuals to comprehensively solve problems by managing their thinking strategies effectively. This study employs a descriptive approach and utilizes the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory, adapted from Schraw and Dennison’s work. The descriptive research involved 53 tenth grade students from a high school. The primary objective of this study is to map metacognitive regulation and their potential in tackling complex problems. Data analysis integrates Likert-scale results with percentage calculations for each as pect. Additionally, the data were analyzed to determine the reliability of the instrument, identify metacognitive regulation patterns, and map the distribution of students’ abilities using the Rasch model. The findings reveal variations in students’ metacognitive regulation achievements: Planning 82%, Information Management Strategies 73%, Comprehension Monitoring 77%, Debugging Strategies 82%, and Evaluation 92%. These indicate that students’ metacognitive regulation still require further development like Information Management Strategies. The conclusion of this research is students’ metacognitive regulation shows variation across domains and it has significant potential in helping to solve complex problems. This study underscores the importance of designing targeted instructional strategies to enhance students’ metacognitive regulation skills, ensuring they are better equipped to handle complex learning challenges.

Abstract

This research aims to examine junior high school students' problem-solving abilities on the topic of temperature and heat. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, involving 20 seventh-grade students from SMP Negeri 1 Ngoro during the 2024/2025 academic year. The instrument used was an essay test, with problem-solving indicators based on Polya’s stages: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and reviewing the solution. The findings revealed that students’ performance across these four stages remained relatively low. Most students tended to bypass crucial steps and proceeded directly to the solution without proper planning. Only a few were able to follow the entire process coherently and accurately. These results are consistent with previous studies, highlighting that students’ problem-solving skills vary significantly depending on their ability level. Therefore, more contextual, interactive, and student-centered learning strategies are necessary to enhance critical and scientific thinking skills in problem-solving.
