Abstract

The circular economy has emerged as an alternative solution to the linear economic model that focuses on unsustainable resource consumption and waste generation. In the global context facing an environmental crisis, this concept offers a more sustainable approach by prioritizing efficient resource use, material recovery, and waste reduction. This article examines the philosophy of the circular economy as an ethical reflection that balances economic growth with ecological wisdom. Through an in-depth literature review, the article highlights the evolution of the circular economy concept, the challenges of its implementation, and the social and ethical dimensions that must be considered to achieve the goals of the circular economy in a just and inclusive manner. The philosophy behind the circular economy invites us to reflect on the linear economic growth paradigm that has dominated the global production and consumption system, which in reality often contributes to severe environmental degradation. This research reveals that while the circular economy offers great potential for achieving efficiency and sustainability, its implementation requires serious attention to aspects of ethics, social justice, and intergenerational responsibility. In this context, this article aims to delve deeper into how circular economy principles can be integrated with ecological policies that respect planetary limitations and human well-being, and to provide guidance for the development of more sustainable and equitable policies in the future.

Abstract

Simon Kuznet explained the inverted U curve theory regarding inequality, which said that as a country develops, inequality will increase until it reaches a certain critical point, and after that inequality will begin to decrease. So this research is aimed at finding out the extent of income inequality between sub-district areas in Dumai City and analyzing things that have the potential to cause this inequality, using secondary data from 5 sub-districts in Dumai City from 2015 to 2023. All data provided used was obtained from the Basan Statistics Center of Dumai City and then processed using PSPP software. Analysis of inequality using the Williamson Index and fixed effect model panel data regression, resulted in the independent variables, namely agricultural productivity, road stability, economic growth and population growth rate, each having a significant effect on income inequality between sub-districts in Kot Dumai.

Abstract

The application of sharia principles in economics promises a more equitable and inclusive economic development. Implementing sharia economics in coastal areas provides a number of economic benefits for the community. Limited access to adequate resources and infrastructure can affect the community's ability to apply sharia economic principles. The purpose of this study was to determine what factors influence the application of the concept of sharia economics in coastal areas seen from internal and external factors. This study is a quantitative study. The respondents in this study were 300 people in the Meranti Islands who were already working. The data analysis technique used was multiple linear regression using the SEM-PLS model. The results of this study showed that the variables of education and skills, personality and motivation, social and economic, environment, and technology and information had a direct and significant effect on the application of the sharia concept in the coastal areas of the Meranti Islands. while the variables of policy and regulation did not have a direct and significant effect on the application of the sharia concept in the coastal areas of Meranti Regency.

Abstract

Aquaculture-based micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) often struggle with limited technology, weak management, and high production costs. This program aimed to strengthen the capacity of aquaculture MSMEs through the application of biofloc technology and semi-natural spawning techniques in catfish culture. The intervention was carried out with the “Maju Bersama” Community Business Group (KUBE) in Industritenayan, Pekanbaru, under the Community Development Program (Desa Binaan) of Universitas Riau. Methods included counseling, training, workshops, demonstrations, and mentoring on hatchery techniques, grow-out management, and entrepreneurship. Program evaluation was conducted using a participatory approach, measuring improvements in skills, seed production, and system sustainability. Results showed increased knowledge and skills of the target group in catfish breeding and farming. The establishment of a hatchery unit enabled independent seed production, reducing dependence on external suppliers and lowering costs. Biofloc systems improved feed efficiency, water quality, and survival rates. These outcomes demonstrate that integrating aquaculture technology with business capacity building can be an effective model of community empowerment. The program contributed to income generation, MSME independence, and supported Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to decent work and economic growth.

Abstract

Carbon emissions are a major driver of global climate change, and Indonesia, as the world's fourth-largest archipelagic nation, faces significant challenges in managing its carbon footprint. The National Action Plan for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction allocates emission reduction targets to key sectors such as forestry and peatlands, agriculture, energy and transportation, industry, and waste management. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the comparison of carbon emissions across Indonesia's islands is crucial for designing more targeted and effective mitigation strategies to achieve national and global sustainability goals. This study analyzes the comparison of carbon emissions across six major Indonesian islands/regions: Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku-Papua. The analysis was conducted on 43 economic sectors that contribute to direct CO₂ emissions. The primary objectives of this study were to identify differences in carbon emissions between islands and determine whether these differences are statistically significant, as well as to identify the unique characteristics of each island in its contribution to national emissions. The analysis revealed statistically significant differences in carbon emissions across islands in Indonesia. The analysis revealed extreme regional disparities in emission contributions. Java dominates, contributing 63.70% of total national emissions. Sumatra ranks second with 21.48%, while other islands contribute much less. The oil and gas mining sector contributes nearly a third of total national emissions, followed by the cement industry and electricity generation. This research makes an important contribution to understanding Indonesia's carbon emissions profile from a regional and sectoral perspective.

Abstract

This study analyzes the issue of labor utilization in Indonesia, which is still far from efficient. The main focus is on the phenomena of underemployment and skills mismatch as the fundamental issue of labor market inefficiency. Interestingly, although open unemployment statistics show very low figures, the productive capacity of most of our workforce has not been fully drawn into the labor market. This is reflected in the minimal working hours, low productivity, and the gap between educational qualifications and professional requirements. Through a literature review that synthesizes national data and international reports, this study finds that underemployment in Indonesia is based on structural problems, such as the strong influence of the informal sector and economic inequality between regions. Moreover, the phenomenon of over-education is a clear manifestation of human capital wastage. In summary, the efficiency of the Indonesian labor market cannot be assessed solely on the basis of formal unemployment figures; closer synchronization between the education system and industry needs is required.
