Abstract

Climate change driven by greenhouse gas emissions highlights the need to estimate carbon stocks in various ecosystems, including peatlands increasingly converted into oil palm plantations. This study aimed to estimate aboveground carbon (AGC) stocks in oil palm plantations on Tapung peatland, Kampar, Riau. The research was conducted from February to August 2025 in Pagaruyung, Air Terbit, and Sungai Putih villages using purposive sampling with 0.05 ha circular plots. Tree biomass and necromass were estimated with allometric equations, while understory and litter were measured directly. Results showed total carbon stocks ranged from 21.43 to 24.78 ton/ha, with the highest in Air Terbit (24.78 ton/ha), followed by Pagaruyung (23.30 ton/ha), and Sungai Putih (21.43 ton/ha). Oil palm trees were the main contributors (±15–17 ton/ha), followed by necromass (6–9 ton/ha), whereas litter (0.14–0.20 ton/ha) and understory (0.03–0.05 ton/ha) contributed minimally. Variations were influenced by tree age, canal conditions, and plantation management. The study concludes that oil palm trees dominate AGC storage, while necromass provides medium-term carbon reserves. Management recommendations include maintaining oil palm stands, utilizing frond necromass, and sustainably managing litter and understory to support climate change mitigation.

Abstract

Empty oil palm bunches (OPEFB) contain important nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and micronutrients such as boron (B), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn). These nutrients can be released into the soil and are available for plant growth with empty oil palm bunches. Composting is a natural recycling method and returns organic matter to the biological cycle. OPEFB as an organic fertilizer has great potential to help increase soil fertility and productivity. Utilization of organic waste in the form of liquid compost can be done using a composter. Processing waste into compost can have quite high economic value. This community service activity received a positive response from the Kampung Tengah village community because it increased knowledge related to the processing of OPEFB waste and also organic waste so that it becomes useful and economically valuable compost.

Abstract

Bukit Tiga Puluh National park (TNBT) of Riau Province is a nature conservation area with a high diversity of fauna, one of which is the butterfly. Butterfly species diversity is influenced by the vegetation in their habitat. The TNBT utilization zone has a habitat type with varied vegetation. There is no information about the species of butterflies in the area. This study aimed to identify morphological character of butterflies and vegetation based on morphological characters. The method used was exploration. The catching area of the butterfly was the Granite waterfall and the Bukit Lancang path of TNBT utilization zone. Samples made as insectarium and herbarium. The  identification of butterfly characters consisted of the head, thorax, abdomen, legs and wings. There were a number of different types of butterflies and plants between the Granite waterfall area (22 and 28 species) and the Bukit Lancang paths (5 and 9 species). The type of butterfly was dominated by the family Nymphalidae. This is due to the amount of vegetation and environmental conditions that are more favorable in the granite waterfall area. The key determinants of butterfly species are the characters of the wing. The results of this study can contribute to maintaining the TNBT butterflies in Riau Province and also as database information of butterflies species in Indonesia.

Abstract

Umar bin Khathab menjadi khalifah sekitar 10 tahun.

Abstract

Indonesian people use plants as medicine because they are considered to have fewer side effects. The Lingga island community used Phanera semibifida (Roxb.) traditionally to make therapeutic drugs. P. semibifida has the potential to be a medicinal plant. We extracted stems and leaves with three different solvents and tested their cytotoxic activity. The ethanolic stem extract showed the highest value of LC₅₀ in the moderate toxicity category. The ethanolic steam extract continued to be subjected to in silico analysis, using molecular docking. We selected four compounds for molecular docking studies against five cancer-related proteins. The proteins are Estrogen receptor α, CDK2, Human Cytochrome P450 CYP17A1, Cyclin A, and BCL-2. The result showed that Ellagic acid bound strongly to Estrogen receptor α, CDK2, CYP17A1, and Cyclin A protein. Cyanidanol showed the highest affinity to BCL-2. These results suggest that P. semibifida contains compounds that can target multiple cancer-related proteins. Our findings highlight its potential as a source of anticancer agents. We recommend isolating these compounds and testing their efficacy through in vitro and in vivo studies to confirm their therapeutic potential in future studies.
