Abstract

The increasing global demand for clean water underscores the urgency of addressing environmental pollution, particularly through effective wastewater treatment. Rapid urbanization, population growth, and industrial expansion have significantly contributed to the degradation of water quality, making contamination a persistent and complex challenge. Despite numerous scientific efforts to develop remediation strategies, many existing techniques remain difficult to replicate or scale down effectively for widespread application. In this context, nanotechnology has emerged as a promising field, offering innovative solutions for environmental remediation. Among various nanomaterials, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles stand out due to their unique physicochemical and optical properties, which are substantially enhanced at the nanoscale. ZnO nanoparticles have gained considerable attention in material science, especially for their applications in photocatalysis, antimicrobial treatments, and environmental detoxification. However, their synthesis and functional performance are highly sensitive to several factors, including the pH of the reaction medium, calcination temperature, reaction time, stirring speed, the nature of capping agents, and the concentration of metal precursors. These variables critically influence the size, morphology, and surface activity of ZnO nanoparticles, thereby determining their effectiveness in water treatment applications. Understanding and optimizing these synthesis parameters are crucial for enhancing the reproducibility, efficiency, and scalability of ZnO-based nanotechnologies in real-world environmental contexts.

Abstract

The creation of genetically identical creatures by cloning is essential to contemporary biotechnology, agriculture, and medical research. Although the basic idea of cloning is the same in all kingdoms, there are substantial differences between plants and animals in terms of its use, effectiveness, and moral consequences. Cloning is a common, natural occurrence in plants and is frequently accomplished using asexual reproduction procedures such as tissue culture, grafting, and vegetative propagation. Because plant cells are highly totipotent, practically any somatic cell may grow again into a whole organism given the right circumstances. The production of genetically engineered plants with enhanced features, the preservation of uncommon species, and the large-scale multiplication of genetically uniform crops have all been made easier by this regenerative potential. Animal cloning, on the other hand, poses far more biological and technological difficulties. Due to developmental errors, aberrant gene expression, and insufficient reprogramming of the donor nucleus, this procedure usually has poor success rates and necessitates intricate management. It brings up important issues about biodiversity, animal care, and the ethical ramifications of cloning sentient creatures. Furthermore, animal cloning is more closely regulated and scrutinized by the public than plant cloning, which is generally recognized in agricultural operations and conservation initiatives. This is particularly true when it comes to food production and possible human cloning. The difference in the effectiveness and uses of cloning is mostly explained by the difference in totipotency between plant and animal cells. The accuracy of modification is becoming closer thanks to recent technological advancements like CRISPR-Cas9, yet the ethical and practical possibilities of cloning in these two domains are still not comparable. The intricate relationship between biological viability, technical development, and societal acceptability of interspecies cloning is shown by this comparative study. Guidance on the proper application and control of cloning technologies in biomedicine and agriculture depends on an understanding of these distinctions.

Abstract

The elimination of dyes from wastewater represents a critical environmental challenge, as dye effluents from industries such as textiles, printing, and paper production pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health. Conventional treatment methods are often limited in efficiency and cost-effectiveness, necessitating the exploration of advanced alternatives. This review analyzes the application of functional oxide nanoparticles in dye removal, with particular focus on metal oxides such as titanium dioxide, iron oxide, and zinc oxide, as well as mixed metal oxides. These nanomaterials exhibit exceptional adsorption and photocatalytic properties due to their large surface area, tunable surface chemistry, and distinctive surface characteristics, which enhance dye removal efficiency. The adsorption mechanisms involve electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and π–π stacking interactions, while photocatalytic degradation relies on the generation of reactive oxygen species under light irradiation, allowing complete dye mineralization and minimizing harmful intermediates. Despite these advantages, further research is needed to evaluate long-term stability, recyclability, and potential ecological impacts, alongside the development of cost-effective synthesis methods and innovative nanomaterials with improved performance.

Abstract

Liver cancer remains a major global health burden, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) being the most common form and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Its progression is often accompanied by metabolic and renal dysfunction, complicating treatment outcomes. While conventional therapies such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted drug treatments offer benefits, they are frequently associated with high toxicity and adverse side effects. This discussion highlights the potential of Annona senegalensis as a safer alternative for managing HCC-related complications, particularly in the context of lipid metabolism and renal function. Evidence from experimental studies suggests that the ethanolic leaf extract of A. senegalensis significantly improves lipid profiles by reducing cholesterol levels from 368.57 ± 1.72 in the negative control group to 266.40 ± 0.88, 217.46 ± 0.82, and 182.24 ± 1.20 at 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg doses, respectively, while maintaining favorable HDL levels at higher doses. These findings indicate the extract’s potential to enhance lipid metabolism, lower cardiovascular risk, and provide renal protection during liver cancer progression. Beyond its biochemical effects, the study reinforces the growing relevance of integrating traditional medicinal plants into modern healthcare frameworks as complementary therapeutic options. Overall, A. senegalensis demonstrates promising hepatoprotective, metabolic, and nephroprotective effects, warranting further investigation into its bioactive compounds and clinical applicability.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of ferrous nanoparticles (FeNPs) derived from Psidium guajava L. leaves on liver function in male Wistar rats. Fresh leaves were harvested from the Government Reservation Area (G.R.A), Wukari, Taraba State, washed, air-dried, and pulverized prior to FeNP preparation. Twenty-five male albino rats (140–190 g) were randomly assigned to five groups, with Group 1 serving as the control and Groups 2–5 receiving oral FeNP doses of 100, 250, 500, and 1000 ppm, respectively, for three weeks. Post-treatment, serum samples were collected under chloroform anaesthesia for biochemical and histological analyses. Liver function tests revealed non-significant differences (p > 0.05) in measured parameters between Groups 1 and 3, whereas Groups 2, 4, and 5 showed significant alterations (p < 0.05) compared with the control. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels increased significantly in Groups 3–5, while Group 2 showed no significant change; alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels increased significantly in all treated groups except Groups 3 and 4. Albumin concentrations were significantly elevated across all treated groups. Total bilirubin (TB) and indirect bilirubin (IDB) remained unchanged in Group 2 but increased significantly in Groups 3–5, whereas direct bilirubin (DB) did not differ in Groups 2 and 3 but rose significantly in Groups 4 and 5. Total protein (TP) levels were comparable between Groups 1 and 2 but were significantly higher in Groups 3–5. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels did not differ significantly among groups, although apparent increases were observed, while catalase (CAT) activity was significantly elevated in all treated groups, peaking in Group 5. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity remained unchanged in Groups 2 and 3 but increased significantly in Groups 4 and 5. Histological examination revealed dose-dependent structural abnormalities in liver tissue, with the most pronounced damage observed in Group 5. Overall, FeNPs from Psidium guajava leaves induced dose-dependent alterations in liver function and antioxidant enzyme activity in male Wistar rats, with higher doses, particularly 1000 ppm, associated with marked biochemical disturbances and histological damage, suggesting potential hepatotoxicity at elevated concentrations and underscoring the need for further studies to define safe exposure thresholds and long-term effects.

Abstract

Hospital housekeepers play a vital role in maintaining hygiene and preventing infections within healthcare facilities, yet they are frequently exposed to biological hazards such as bloodborne pathogens, respiratory droplets, and contaminated waste, often without adequate protection or training. In Nigeria, particularly in tertiary institutions like Wukari Teaching Hospital, limited resources and weak enforcement of safety protocols further increase the vulnerability of non-clinical staff. This study aimed to assess the level of biological risk exposure among hospital housekeepers and identify gaps in personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, hygiene practices, and institutional support. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 60 hospital housekeepers at Wukari Teaching Hospital, with stratified random sampling ensuring representation across departments including wards, emergency, surgery, and outpatient units. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, direct observation checklists, and key informant interviews with infection control officers, and variables assessed included demographic data, exposure history, PPE usage, hygiene practices, and training experience. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 26, while qualitative responses were thematically coded. Findings revealed that 78.3% of housekeepers had direct contact with biological waste in the past six months, with blood, sputum, and vomit being the most common contaminants; only 41.7% consistently used full PPE, and just 36.7% reported that PPE was always available. Hand hygiene compliance was observed in 58.3% of cases, while 65% of respondents had never received formal infection control training, and only 30% felt adequately protected at work, with a majority suggesting improvements such as regular training, better supervision, and increased PPE supply. The study concludes that hospital housekeepers at Wukari Teaching Hospital face substantial biological risks due to frequent exposure, inconsistent PPE usage, and inadequate training, highlighting the urgent need for institutional reforms including structured infection control education, reliable PPE provision, and strict enforcement of hygiene protocols to protect this essential workforce and ensure a safe and resilient healthcare environment.

Abstract

Mangifera indica (MI), popularly known as mango belong to the genus Mangifera and family Anacardiacea. The leaves, stem bark and roots are used as herbal medicines worldwide. Mango possesses anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial, anti- oxidant, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. This research focuses on the hyperglycemic and antibacterial capacity of methanol stem bark extract of Mango tree in alloxan induced diabetic albino rats to combat its fatal consequences in humans. This work is carried out to determine the hypoglycemic capacity of methanol stem bark extract of Mangifera indica in alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats at different volumes (ml) of administration, to also determine the antibacterial capacity of methanol stem bark extract of Mangifera indica in alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats at different volumes (ml) of administration and to test the efficacy of methanol stem bark extract of Mangifera indica in alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats. Fresh stem bark (trunk) of Mangifera indica were collected in the Federal University Wukari school premises, were air dried for 21 days, pounded into powder, cold macerated in methanol, filtered and extract was gotten. 27 diseased-free (healthy) albino rats which were purchased at Yola, Adamawa State, were kept in different cages to enable proper analysis at the cause of the work. Results of liver function indices showed that treatments with 100 mg/kg, 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg body weight of Mangifera indica stem bark methanolic extract were able to restore liver function parameters at different levels of concentrations. Treatments with standard drug and all the doses of the extract were able to counteract the elevated effect of alloxan in some kidney parameters such as serum urea level at 200mg/kg with (25.23±1.98a) and (1.05 ±0.14a) for creatinine at 200mg/kg respectively. The result of this study shows that the stem back extract possessed as an agent for hypoglycaemic. These can serve as possible source of raw material for pharmaceutical products. However, the extract is found not to be harmful to the liver and kidney and should be used as health remedy for certain diseases such as hyperglycaemic and bacterial effects.

Abstract

Medicinal plants have served through the ages, as a constant source of medicaments for the exposure of variety of diseases. The history of herbal medicine is as old as human civilization. The plants are known to provide a rich source of botanical anthelmintic, antibacterial and insecticides. Mangifera indica (MI), popularly known as mango belong to the genus Mangifera and family Anacardiacea. The leaves, stem bark and roots are used as herbal medicines worldwide. In antibacterial analysis, higher growth inhibition rate was observed at 400 ug/ml for Klebsiella pneumonia with 20.55 + 1.26μg/mL indicating that the extract has effect at a higher concentration than when treated at a lower concentration. In blood glucose level analysis, administration of 100 mg/kg body weight of Mangifera indica stem bark methanolic extract showed reduced blood glucose level in day 14 with 5.11 ± 0.14a of treatment when compared to normal control.

Abstract

HPLC techniques were employed to analyze the bioactive components of the chloroform leaf extract of Kalanchoe pinnata leaf from Takum in Taraba State. A botanist from Taraba State University's Department of Biological Sciences in Jalingo identified the plant leaves, which were then gathered, cleaned, and processed. Using cold maceration, extraction was done by weighing 1500g of the powdered leaf into 1 liter of ethanol and distill water, respectively. Until further investigation, the extracts were stored in a refrigerator in a firmly closed container. The injection valve was used for the HPLC analysis, and the conditions were 20 μl, a UV variable wavelength detector (set at 300 nm), reprosol 100 C8mn, 5 μm 4.6 x 150mm column (30°C), and sensitivity of 0.001. Phosphate buffer (v/v) was used as an aqueous solvent (A) and CH3CN as an organic solvent (B) in HPLC. Gradient elution of the analytes occurred at a flow rate of 1 milliliter per minute. Software generated chromatograms. Operating temperature of the HPLC instrument was room temperature (23 ± 2°C). After injecting 20 μl of each diluted extract into the HPLC three times, the average peak areas were produced and utilized for quantification. Based on the HPLC analysis, the chloroform leaf extract of Kalanchoe pinnata contained the following bioactive constituents: quercetin, gallic acid, and chlorogenic acid. Additionally, the presence of vitamins B1 and B3 was also noted. The different bioactive constituents eluted at different retention times, and their respective amounts were also detected.

Abstract

This research investigated the total antioxidant capacity, total flavonoids content, total phenolics content as well the flavonoids, vitamins and amino acids profile of stembark methanol extract of P. americana. Plant materials have been known be rich source of various medicinal active ingredients. These may include alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and tannins as well as nutritional components including sugars, amino acids as well as proteins in addition to other vital components. The stembark of P. americana was harvested in its plant in Baissa, Taraba State, Nigeria. The plant material was air dried and pulverized and soaked in methanol for 72 hours before filtration. The filtrate was further concentrated using rotary evaporator and water bath. The concentrate was analyzed for total antioxidant capacity using DPPH, flavonoids content using aluminium chloride and phenolics content using folin ciocaltue. Flavonoids, vitamins and amin acids profile was determined using HPLC. The result total antioxidant capacity shows that inhibition increased with concentration with the 100µL/100mL had inhibition percentage of 87.88% whereas the lowest concentration of 31.25µL/100mLhad the inhibition percentage of 40.14%. The results for total flavonoid content and total phenolics content show significant levels with 42.21±0.23mg QE/100g and 33.65±3.02mg GAE/100g respectively. The result for flavonoid and phenolics profile reveals that quercetin and caffeic acid phenyl ester were identified with 0.50% and 99.50% respectively. For vitamins, vitamin K was detected with 0.40%, vitamin B1 with 80.20% and vitamin B2 with 19.50% abundance. There seven different amino acids identified, these include asparagine, threonine, phenylalanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, leucine and arginine. The outcomes reveal that the plant material could possess important phytochemicals which could be used in disease treatment as well as vital macromolecules that can be used as supplements.
