Abstract

Although exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is widely recognized for its nutritional and immunological benefits, its role as a natural contraceptive through the Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) remains insufficiently understood, particularly in rural communities where cultural and religious beliefs shape reproductive decisions. This study aimed to assess the level of awareness, perceptions, and barriers to the adoption of EBF as a method of birth control among Catholic pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in rural communities, while also examining the influence of education and religious beliefs on knowledge and acceptance of LAM. A quantitative survey design was employed using a structured questionnaire administered to 165 Catholic pregnant women. The instrument covered demographic characteristics, awareness of EBF and LAM, perceptions and beliefs, and barriers to adoption. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests to examine associations between variables. The findings showed that most respondents were aged 25–34 years (47.3%) and married (84.8%). Although 61.8% had heard of EBF as a birth control method, only 35.2% were familiar with the term LAM, and only 25.5% understood its three effectiveness criteria. Perceptions were mixed, with 47.9% considering EBF a reliable method and 59.4% believing that it aligns with Catholic teachings. The main barriers identified were lack of counseling (51.5%), cultural pressure (43.6%), and fear of pregnancy despite amenorrhea (36.4%). Education level was significantly associated with awareness of LAM (p = 0.03). The study concludes that, despite the perceived compatibility of natural family planning with Catholic teaching, substantial informational and practical barriers continue to limit informed adoption of EBF as a contraceptive method in rural settings. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the gap between religious acceptance and practical knowledge, and underscore the need for strengthened health education, engagement of religious leaders, and literacy-sensitive interventions to support safe and informed use of EBF for birth control.

Abstract

The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on public health has been unpleasant. Vaccination is a critical measure to decrease COVID-19 economic loss and public health burden. This is very helpful to control the COVID-19 pandemic. The process of halting COVID-19 solely depends on population uptake of the vaccination process and the adoption of non-pharmacological measures. This in turn relies on the public willingness to get vaccinated. The public acceptability of this vaccination is further determined by the level of knowledge and trust in currently available COVID-19 vaccines. Therefore, this paper aims to discuss the findings of public knowledge, attitude, and acceptability of COVID-19 vaccines among traders in Wuse Market Abuja. A cross-sectional study was conducted among different traders in the Abuja Wuse Market to assess their knowledge, attitude and level of acceptability toward COVID-19 vaccinations using a self-administered survey questionnaire with the following four sections; socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge assessment questions, attitude assessment, and acceptability questions. A total of 166 participants completed the questionnaire. The knowledge of the COVID-19 vaccinations among the study participants was high with 143(86%) respondents stating that they knew about COVID-19 vaccinations. Among the traders that participated, 74(44.36%) believed that vaccines are safe and 109 (66.02%) agreed that vaccines are critical to protect the public from COVID-19 infection. But only, 45 (27.4%) accept to receive the vaccine. Participants’ attitudes, knowledge, and level of acceptability were significantly affected by age, gender, education level, and marital status (P <0.001). Our findings suggest that there is good knowledge and attitude toward the vaccination process against COVID-19 among study participants in spite of low acceptability. Awareness campaigns are therefore necessary to disseminate reliable knowledge about COVID-19 vaccines and demystify the COVID-19 conspiracy theory in order to raise the level of vaccination acceptance.

Abstract

Angiogenesis among the functional organ systems, the cardiovascular system is the paramount appearing system in the development of vertebrate embryo. However, different epigenetic and genetic mechanisms play important role in the development of vascular organ system. During embryonic life, the blood capillaries from endothelial tissues differentiate from mesodermal cells in the form of vasculo-genesis. Alteration of primary blood vessels into supplementary vascular system is believed to happen through a process known as angiogenesis. The process of angiogenesis happens naturally during pregnancy, wound healing, female menstrual cycle and important in tissue growth and repair. Different pathological conditions like diabetes, chronic kidney disease, cutaneous complications, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, rheumatoid arthritis and age-related macular degeneration are considered by excessive angiogenesis in which vessels grow in unmannered and unrestricted pattern.

Abstract

Hepatitis B virus infection remains a global health problem, it is a leading cause of liver disease and a possible worldwide source of severe morbidity and mortality. The current standard therapy using interferons or antiviral agents is not successful in all cases and is associated with severe side effects. Consequently, the development of new medicines for the treatment of HBV is still relevant. This experimental study was therefore performed to assess the anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) potential of Leaf extract of Morinda citrifolia. The methanolic extracts of the Leaf extract of Morinda citrifolia first assessed for cytotoxicity on HepG2.2.15 cells and cytotoxicity concentration (CC50) values were resolved. The methanolic extracts of the Leaf extract of Morinda citrifolia was additionally examined on HepG2.2.15 cells for anti-HBV potential by examining the inhibition of HBsAg and HBeAg production in the culture supernatants, and calculating their half-maximum inhibitory concentration (IC50) and therapeutic index (TI) values. Out of four concentration only three exhibit inhibition of HBsAg production in an increasing dose and time dependent manner. These four concentrations are 100 μg/mL, 200 μg/mL, 300 μg/mL and 400 μg/mL, with IC50 values of 21.15, 24.51, 118.94, 17.65, 20.93 μg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the presence of terpenoids, tannins, alkaloids and flavonoids that could contribute to antiviral efficacy was validated with a qualitative phytochemical study of active extracts.

Abstract

The medical term used for blood pressure is Hypertension (HTN). Hypertension is a common problem faced by most people today. The leading danger for many diseases such as CVD (cardiovascular) disorder and stroke is high blood pressure. Major diseases like CHF (congestive heart failure), renal disease and blindness can also be caused by HTN. Awareness of plant-based medication therapeutics is continuously increasing day by day. Morinda citrifolia L (Noni) has been used in folk remedies by Polynesians for over 2000 years, and is reported to have a broad range of therapeutic effects. The purpose of this study is to investigate the hypotensive potential of Morinda citrifolia L (Noni) (Family: Rubiaceae) in both normotensive and hypertensive rats. Methods: Aqueous-methanol (70:30) extract of Morinda citrifolia L stem-bark extract at doses of 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg was evaluated for its effect on blood pressure and heart rate using non-invasive blood pressure measuring apparatus. After initial screening, 100 mg/kg dose that produced a maximum effect was selected for the antihypertensive study. Median lethal dose (LD50) and sub-chronic toxicity of the extract were also determined. Various biochemical parameters and organ weight were measured using standard procedures. Results: The extract produced a significant (p < 0.01) decrease in systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean blood pressure (MBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and heart rate of normotensive rats at all test doses with maximum effect at 100 mg/kg. Similarly, a significant antihypertensive and negative chronotropic effect was observed in both hypertensive models. LD50 of the extract was 200 mg/kg in mice. The extract also exhibited a reduction (p < 0.05) in serum alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels while a significant (p < 0.05) increase in high density lipoproteins (HDL) level was observed. Conclusion: It seems that the aqueous-methanol stem-bark extract of Morinda citrifolia L possesses active compounds which may be responsible for the antihypertensive and negative chronotropic effects in rats.

Abstract

Achyranthes aspera (Amaranthaceae) is an important medicinal herb found as a weed throughout Nigeria. Though almost all of its parts are used in traditional systems of medicines, leaves, seeds, roots and shoots are the most important parts which are used medicinally. The present article gives an account of updated information on its phytochemical and pharmacological properties. The Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is still contributing significantly in morbidities and mortalities in the world today. The drugs normally used to treat the infection are costly, toxic, and less effective due to resistance by HIV. Thus, the assessment of gp120-CD4 binding inhibition potential of Achyranthes aspera leaves extract was conducted using gp120-CD4 capture ELISA kits. Aqueous, methanol, and petroleum ether extracts were prepared at 1000, 500 and 250 μg/ml and tested for gp120-CD4 binding inhibition. Sub-cute toxicity assay was done using albino rats; Biochemical parameters including alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) as well as bilirubin for liver and urea, electrolytes and creatinine for kidney functions were evaluated. The results of the effect of crude aqueous, methanol and petroleum ether Achyranthes aspera leaves extract against gp120-CD4 showed inhibition ranging from 1.4 – 17.2 %. with 1000 μg/ml showing highest percentage of inhibition. There was no significant difference (P = 0.862) in terms of percentage inhibition between the three concentrations tested. Methanol extract demonstrated the highest percentage inhibition of gp120-CD4 bindings (17.2 %). No significant difference (P = 0.124) between the three extracts against gp-120-CD4 bindings was observed. The results of the sub-acute toxicity study have shown that, there were no physical changes in animals treated with 500 mg/kg of all the extracts. The result of liver function test revealed that, ALT, AST and ALP were within the normal range (12U/L) for both the high and low concentrations of the extracts including the control. Also result for total protein, albumin, globulin for the test albino rats and that of the control rat were found to be within the normal range 5.1-6.1, 4.2-5.3, and 3.1-3.8 g/dl respectively. For serum electrolyte level, sodium and potassium ions for the various concentrations of the extracts tested and control were also found to be within normal range. The result of kidney function test revealed that, urea, creatinine and direct and total bilirubin of the rats tested and control were all found to be within normal range. In conclusion, ether Achyranthes aspera leaves extract possessed some levels of HIV-1 gp120-CD4 binding inhibition potentials and the extracts was found to be non-toxic at 250 and 500mg/ kg body weight. It can be recommended that, the bioactive compounds should therefore be isolated and tested for gp120-CD4 binding inhibition activity.

Abstract

The attachment theory suggests that the parental-child relationship is the building block for future relationship patterns and immediate security and comfort. A securely attached child will likely have healthy relationships as an adult, with better emotional awareness, empathy, and capacity to create long-term love relationships. On the other hand, insecurely attached children may go on to experience issues with attachment into adulthood, leading to relationship difficulties, emotional dysregulation, and greater risk of mental health difficulties such as personality disorders, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, it has been proven that the attachment system itself is also dynamic and changes depending on a wide range of relational and environmental circumstances. The type of attachment relationships can be influenced by a variety of factors, such as parenting style, societal context, cultural expectations, and even the occurrence of outside stressors like trauma or divorce. For instance, therapies that foster secure attachment can effectively decrease the negative impacts of early trauma and adversity and allow children to be resilient.

Abstract

Epilepsy-related seizures can range greatly, from focal seizures that can impact certain brain areas to widespread tonic-clonic seizures. Although the exact origin of epilepsy is sometimes unknown, the underlying reasons are many and include genetic factors, brain damage, infections, stroke, tumors, and developmental abnormalities. The goal of both pharmaceutical and non-pharmacological treatments for epilepsy is to avoid seizures. With the aim of controlling seizures, antiepileptic medications (AEDs) are the first line of treatment for the majority of patients. However, about one-third of individuals with epilepsy suffer from drug-resistant seizures, which can cause cognitive, psychological, and social issues and have a significant impact on their quality of life. In these cases, alternative treatments like deep brain stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, ketogenic diets, and surgery may be considered. New insights into the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying epilepsy have created opportunities for personalized medicine, allowing for more focused therapeutic approaches. New treatment approaches have been made possible by the discovery of certain genetic mutations, changed ion channel function, and neuroinflammation in some forms of epilepsy. Even with these developments, there are still obstacles in the way of attaining ideal seizure control and raising epileptic patients' quality of life. Because individuals with epilepsy may experience stigmatization, discrimination, and obstacles to social integration, work, and education, the illness also has significant social ramifications. To improve outcomes for individuals with epilepsy, comprehensive care models, enhanced diagnostic technologies, and public awareness campaigns are essential. Additionally, the burden that epilepsy causes on people and society may be lessened with continued study into the neurobiological processes of seizures and the creation of more potent therapies.

Its application increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, enhancing healthcare access, reducing costs, and facilitating the management of chronic diseases and mental health issues. While offering distinct benefits, such as greater efficiency and enhanced accessibility, telemedicine also poses challenges, including technological hurdles, privacy issues, and legal restrictions. Emerging innovations such as artificial intelligence, smart gadgets, and interconnected health systems position telemedicine to become an essential element of contemporary healthcare. Targeted policy and infrastructure initiatives are crucial to promote equitable and effective use.
