Abstract

Abstract: This present study discusses the boarding school-based regeneration in Persatuan Islam (PERSIS) organization formulated by KH. Endang Abdurrahman during the period of 1954-1983. Historical approach is employed in this study with qualitative descriptive model. It reveals that cadre management is culturally performed, where direct and personal relationship between teacher and students are formed. In its development, PERSIS regeneration is more organized through educational institution: Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) owned by PERSIS and courses for Muballigh or preacher. Historically, this reinforcement gained its momentum when PERSIS was led by KH. E. Abdurrahman from 1962 to1983.The system developed by Abdulrahman was yet exclusive and unintegrated with the national education system. Through such system, PERSIS was able to produce many religious scholars (muballigh and ustadz). Keywords: PERSIS, cadres management, PERSIS Pesantren, K.H.E. Abdurrahman

Abstract

This study unravels how Indonesian celebrities who submitted to Salafi Islam (popularly called hijra celebrities) responded to some notable Salafi teachings. Like in many Muslim countries, such as Türkiye, Pakistan, and Egypt, Salafism is increasingly attracting followers from the middle class who then express their Salafism in public visibility, or called “active piety”. The data for this article was collected through in-depth interviews with Salafi preachers (dais) and celebrities who actively participated in the Islamic meetings held or taught by these preachers. This study uses a cultural studies approach, in which Hall's theory of encoding-decoding is used to analyse the active role of hijrah celebrities in receiving messages conveyed by Salafi preachers. This study reveals that the Salafi preachers used the educational approach in their propagation (da’wah) through religious education forums using clear guideline books. Meanwhile, the celebrities’ responses toward this Salafi propagation varied, i.e., dominant hegemony, negotiation, and opposition, with negotiation being the most frequent. In general, the celebrities accepted the Islamic teachings from their Salafi teachers, except for several issues that they considered less relevant to their lives. This study also found the fact that the hijrah celebrities, as recipients of information, did not passively receive information, but they classified, selected, and utilised the information received from the Salafi preachers and adapted it to their needs.

Abstract

Many researches concern with the dialectic between Islam and tradition of Java. One of them is Soebardi studying Serat Cabolek, a manuscript that illustrated the dialectic between Islam and Javanese tradition in 18/19th century. Through philological studies Soebardi has produced a PhD thesis at The Australia National University (1967), and published in 1975 under title “The Book of Cabolek”. This book should be appreciated for having presented an important study on Islam and Java. Yet, it also needs to be studied more deeply through historical studies in order to obtain clearer information about the context. This article attempts to give a short review about the content of the book, and gives a critical explanation based on its socio-historical perspective. The result is that the story in Serat Cabolek is a construction of Javanese Priyayi on their history. It is an upscale historical document, to strengthen the king’s position as Panatagama.

Abstract

This research examines the dynamics of the Salafism movement in Indonesia. Built on the doctrine of Islamic purification, Salafism has evolved into political and social movements with various forms, such as puritan Salafi, haraki, and jihadi. The study highlights the development of the Salafi movement in Indonesia and its contestation with mainstream Islamic groups such as NU and Muhammadiyah. Using critical discourse analysis, the study explores how the identity and religiosity of the Salafi movement are constructed. It reveals the strategic use of social media by Salafi groups to disseminate their teachings. Social media has become an effective tool for attracting followers, particularly among youth and celebrities involved in the hijrah movement. Despite criticism for being overly textualist and conservative, the Salafi’s religious identity is strongly established through distinct symbols of clothing and rituals. This has led to ideological contestation with mainstream Islamic movements that predate their existence in Indonesia.

Abstract

Quranic education has long been a deeply ingrained tradition in Gorontalo City, often referred to as the "Veranda of Madinah." The enactment of Local Regulation Number 6 of 2012 on the Mandatory Reading and Writing of the Al-Quran in Gorontalo City can be seen as a form of state accommodation of this local wisdom. This study examines the background, legalization process, and implementation of Local Regulation Number 6 of 2012 among the people of Gorontalo City. Employing a qualitative descriptive research method based on George C. Edward's theory, the study finds that the implementation of Local Regulation Number 6 of 2012 was only active and had programs for two years during the leadership of Adhan Dambea. After Adhan Dambea's term ended, no further programs were implemented by the government related to the Local Regulation. However, Quranic education remains widespread in Gorontalo City. In reality, the people of Gorontalo provide Quranic education not based on their knowledge of Local Regulation Number 6 of 2012, but rather out of their own self-awareness as Muslims, a tradition deeply embedded in their society.

Abstract

Many Islamic movements have emerged with a different style from the mainstream. One of them is the Salafi movement. Although many parties reject Salafi preaching, not a few can also accept it, one of them is a group of artists who are growing their religious passion. They are known as hijra celebrities. This article discusses the process of acceptance of Salafi da'wah among hijra celebrities. This research is field research with a descriptive qualitative approach. The primary data of this study were obtained from in-depth interviews with preachers and celebrities who attended Salafi recitations. The research subjects were determined purposively after observing several Hijra artists. This research also utilizes various literature related to the Salafism theme and the phenomenon of Hijra celebrity. The results show that social media plays an important role in encouraging the development of the Hijra movement. Social media has connected Hijra celebrities with Salafi preachers. Some of the celebrities interviewed admitted that their interest in attending Salafi studies grew after listening to recitations through social media. Thus, Hijra celebrities are actively seeking and receiving Salafi preaching.

Abstract

The Sufistic approach in the study of religion is a method that seeks to explore the mystical and esoteric dimensions within various religious traditions, including Islam. This article highlights the use of the Sufistic approach by scholars, both within and outside the Islamic tradition, to understand the phenomenon of Sufism and mystical practices in Muslim communities. This study shows that the Sufistic approach is not only relevant for understanding individual morality and spirituality but also provides a broader perspective on interfaith dialogue and pluralism. Various methods such as phenomenology, historical, and even interreligious approaches are employed in Sufistic studies. Thus, this approach offers a deeper understanding of subjective and symbolic spiritual experiences. However, the study also emphasizes that understanding Sufism requires mastery of complex Sufistic terminology and concepts. This article concludes that, amidst the challenges of modernity and extremism, the Sufistic approach in religious studies remains relevant as an effort to enrich the understanding of religiosity and tolerance among religious communities.
